Now if it was omni-directional it would have a chance at replacing Wi-Fi but as it is I can't see it happening + what happens when stuff gets in the way of the beam? and due to sods law stuff will get in the way of the beam.

also what happens when somebody gets another cheap laser and points it at the receiver?
Presumably the laser and receiver are both tuned to a very specific wavelength. It's unlikely you'd be able to just grab any old laser and mess up the signal.
 
So if it's intended for indoor use only, from one immobile object to another, where there can't be anything in the way, then why not just use a good old-fashioned wire? A gigabit router and cable would be far cheaper than $600, and twice faster.

The Article says it "could" be used for Indoor use, to me this is implying it's most likely good for line of site communications outdoors over a long distance.
 
The problem with lasers is that they're very precise. With current microwave transceiver towers, the wind blows them a little to either side and you still get most of the signal; unless the landing point for the laser is quite large, the slightest breeze will cause you to lose signal.
 
Well yeah you would have that with towers moving and such..


I was thinking a more practical application would be something like this: My friend has an apartment above a two bay garage that is seperate from the main house, it's actually a bit of the way down the driveway and is way out of the Wifi range. Having a send and recieve laser could provide a quick stable network connection as small houses wouldn't sway much in the wind..
