Just Ordered A Gp32!

I saw some (obviously the last few of the last batch) GP32 BLU+ 155-166 MHz on ebay.co.uk selling for 99 GBP inc. p&p the other night.

GP32 or GP2x? This has been a question floating around my mind for the last few months.

I finally ordered one GP32, using my budget saved for a gp2x.

Back to this summer when gbax.co.uk is still selling the last batch of gp32 I'm thinking of getting one. And it seems gp32 is still the most powerful handheld for playing homebrew then.

Then comes the rumor that the next version of gp32 will hit the market in September with linux os, dual core, divx play 64MB ram and more.

So I held on, and decided to get a gp2x instead.

As you know in September nothing happens, even www.gpax.co.uk stops updating. And I have lost the passion to visit www.gp32x.de every day.
In October comes the news gp2x will be shipped in November (delayed), together with some exciting pictures of the prototype model.
The truth we now know is that even in November most people were still waiting for their gp2x to come.

Now it's December, most people got their pre-ordered gp2x, only to find that it has all sorts of minor problems: can not play divx correctly, battery life is not as good as supposed to be, only few emu games to play, dead zone on joystick etc. Although most of these problems will be fixed eventually, it seems to me we still need to wait for another 6 months to get all emus working.

It seems to me (not a programmer), at this point, the only advantage of gp2x over gp32 is the ability to play snes at full speed with sound in the *next 6 months*.

Well, should I know I have to wait till the next summer to get a handheld with all the working emus as gp32, I will order a GP32 instead without thinking in June.

I hope I finally make a correct decision (for me). The last few gp32 will surely be more precious because of the collection value and I do not think I will sell them in the forseen future. At least for this xmas I have something to play!

As for gp2x, I think probabily I'll get one at a much later time, when GPH releases the *updated model* of the current gp2x with self-powered usb, 128 RAM, better joystick, a 3d chip built in, wifi etc. Or we may call it gp3x?

For now I can not wait utile my gp32 arrives!

Cheers,
ejoy

Divx works perfecktly.
Battery life is 5-6 hours.
Software took way better off than expected.
Stick sucks :)

Of course you made the right decision to order the gp32. There are some great emus and games for this device, I still use my gp32 a lot, especially for the emus that do not yet exist for the gp2x (gameboy, genesis, wonderswan, lynx, atari st etc), but that does not mean that you should wait any longer for ordering the gp2x. order a gp2x, ASAP!

Great Job ordering the GP32, you won't be dissapointed at all. Tons of emulation, tons of homebrew, and thousands of games to play. I still use my GP32 every day, have had it for 3 years now, and I haven't given a second thought to buying a GP2X. After all its "bugs" are sort out and the emulators mature I'll be getting one, but in the interim I'd rather play established games and emulators rather than fuss with early betas and buggy software. Kudos to the early adoptors though for their willingness to try out an untested unproven device, without them the GP2X wouldn't be where it is already.

I just want to wait till I'm tired of my GP32 :) Also I do not want to risk my money on 1st generation of any product.

Anyway I'm sure my GP32 will serve me for a while :). And if someone comes with a SNES emu running at full speed with sound on, I doubt I'll think of buying a gp2x.

I'm sticking with my GP32 for the time being (haven't had it long anyway) so loads of stuff to try out :D. Eventually, the GP2x will surpass the GP32 in emulators and games but untill then, I'm very happy with the GP32. I may consider the GP2x in a years time depending on the progress of emulators.

:)

I went with the gp2x because I know it will accomplish everything the gp32 has and much more in the near future, and I wanted to have the ability to play mpeg-4 without re-encoding and on the TV. Also, I don't buy many game consoles. The only handheld I have ever had was a GameBoy pocket, and I sold that quite a few years ago. I have an N64 and Dreamcast, but I got both of those near the end of their lifespans, but I still play them.

Hmm... checked out e-bay UK, and there are some EXCELLENT deals for the gp32. Maybe I'll buy one. I'll still buy GP2X though (though this will set my funds for it back a LONG WAY of course) ;) just it'd be nice, since there's so much...STUFF for it already ;) Plus the fact that I wanted one since I first saw it on Lik Sang and did some research... It's a little piece of niche gaming history too which gives it extra value to me (not as in value for selling it on, which I don't really care about). I get this whenever I see an old console in the cabinet at Gamestation ;)

The positive response to this buyer has encouraged me. Now all I need to do is wait for my dad to get back from Newcastle (he's up there for the footie) and get him in a good enough mood that he'll let me use his card to pay (so I hope Newcastle wins- go you Mags!). I hate not having a Debit card (not old enough for credit card). Sucks ass- I can neither spend nor earn money online

EDIT: Just reread this post and realised that it kinda makes it look like an impulse buy . It's not, of course, I don't have that sorta money to throw around ;) (Who does?)

Nice going. You won't regret your purchase.

You seem pretty knowledgeable, but if you have a question about anything, you can check the site in my sig. I myself look things up on it from time to time (mainly the guides). :p

Oh yeah, and F-day's still coming--proof the GP32 still has a LOT of quality releases heading its way.

I have just bought a used GP32 over a GP2X aswell. I read your newbie thing shinneri a while ago. Very Good. Isn't GP32 development sort of dead now ? I thought it was. Those perfect emulators ... are they still being made

Can't wait for F-day. It's been such a looong wait :). Hope we see something this side of the year (maybe 25th :D ).

Thanks. :) And development continues on the GP32. A lot of devs plan to continue support for the GP32 even with the GP2X released. A600, for example, just put out two awesome new FPS interpreters, Hexen and Heretic; and he has two more on the way.

I know Francix announced he was making SNES4ALL for the GP32 (and DC and GP2X) a while back.. Haven't heard anything of it in a while, though.

As for Rlyeh's emulators, yes, they're still being made for the GP32... and the GP2X... and I think the Zodiac, too. :)

Thanks for the info. I need to get up to speed.
I'm glad I got the GP32 :) I saw Hexen and Heretic yesterday on the News Zone. But I got Heretic for my NDS on my flash cart ;) Can't wait for these emulators by ryleh. Are the one's already on his site fully working ?

I can't wait for the final releases. If they ever come :D I so badly want a prefect Megadrive and Snes Emulator. Thanks for the info. Hopefully F-Day will be this Xmas or something.

Yes, it's an impulse buy made at 0:30am
However I did not regret of doing so. The only thing I regret now is that I should place the order one day earlier so that it can be delivered on Friday instead of next Monday

99GBP is 20% less than the last-batch price from www.gpax.co.uk months earlier, and in my opinion this unit is well worth the price.

Nice site, thank you shinneri.
I still believe gp32 has enough power for a full speed snes emu with sound.
Let's just wait.

After giving the gp32 file archive more thoroughly, I've realised how MUCH there is for it ;) I mean, I knew there was a lot, but...

Well, I just gotta really really hope I win. Any long term e-bayers got any tips? I'm kinda thinking of waiting till the last few minutes, then bid up by some, and hope the other people bidding (currently this is 2, and they have been competing with eachother) aren't keen enough to win it to be at their computer at that time... (this is my first time buying anything off ebay). Also, is the lack of the Paypal "buyer protection programme" really anything to worry about if I'm paying via paypal? The seller says in payment details "you are welcome to collect and pay cash on collection." so I'm assuming this is genuine- after all, he's inviting people who can physically collect to do so.

@ejoy: This could be the very thing :) 2 SMCs, one is 64 Meg, the other 16. (Sorry if you saw the original post where I said they were 128! It was a dumb confused mistake)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-X-SMART-MEDIA-CARD...1QQcmdZViewItem

And amazon UK has some low cost 128Meg SMCs which might be worth a look.

Simply follow the following steps:
1. open several browser windows with the bid button on with different bid price you'd like to pay
2. bid (pressing the button) at the very last minute, from lower price button to higher ones (if you are overbid)
3. bid as high as you can
