July Is Here - When Will It Be Released

It should be made clear that the boards will be ready long before that, which we are willing to ship out first if you are willing to be careful with them and take responsibility for any breakages.

That sounds great but is it possible? How would that work with CE /FCC testing? I wouldn't mind paying a little extra if I had to to get the board first.

i don't think we need FCC testing.

Thats right we don't, so long as the distributor is outside of the US. What I meant was that the pandora would be shipped in parts. If the pandora was CE tested as a whole to be shipped as a whole, would it be possible to distribute the boards separate from the unit? Or, would the board and the plastic parts need to be tested separately? Of course, no one here would complain about it... unless it was caught in customs for that reason.

How do we sign up to that? Just send an email to the sales team?

I as a normal consumer(If I ever dev or make anything, it won't be some super big project everyone would go wooting about) would not want to mess with a 'naked' board, I would rather it have some 'clothes' on, I would rather wait :p .

Just the boards? No batteries, LCDs, AC adapters, etc? With no way to power it besides buying another AC adapter, and no way to display anything without another TV cable, I don't know how many people would opt into that...

BUT I WOULD (so send me one!)

TV cables, whatever happened to them?

Doesn't sound like a good idea. I even think it is a weird suggestion to make coming from a company. How do you determine breakage?

Well.. not for me anyway, I'd like to have a fully assembled Pandora. Don't mind waiting a bit longer.

There's one little thing in this sentence that worries me.

No mention of when the blocking item (i.e. cases) will be ready. :/

Sorry Craig. Don't mean to be negative. I'm in 'til the hopefully sweet end :D

Its not that weird, there was a post months ago asking for a pandora console kit. They aren't forcing any one to do it themselves. I think what Craig means by taking responsibility for breakages means that if you damage the board (ie. from static shock, something thats already killed a pandora board) they will not replace it for you. Another part that is more likely to break is the LCD cable (E.D. broke one during his assembly video.)

I would assume the board itself can run from usb since it doesn't have to power the screen but it will be pretty useless with out something better then a remote console. So I have two questions to a dev:
Will the TV out cables be ready when the boards are?
Are there additional LCD cables available if they are broken during assembly (at my cost)?

Well, I think the biggest mistake during development of Pandora was to put the Case at the very end of the Process. Well, it makes sense but more parallel-Development maybe results in faster Development. I still remember the "story" in the past, where the devs sayd, that the case itself will be the smallest problem of the entire Project and can be done within a few weeks...something like that AFAIK... :D :D :D
I always prayed not to put the final Case that far after the PCB development because I and we all know that there are ALWAYS problems and it is better to spot this problems as soon as possible.

You can't design the case until you know what it is you're encasing.

What bothers me is this. From the main page: "Create mould of final case (can be done once the case fits, takes 30 - 35 days)"
And from that post: "The mold creation is the long 45 day process..."

I believe there is a quote somewhere that explains that they were going to ask the case factory to do some more work, so that their processing time would take a bit more, but they could let them start earlier.

The problem is: you can't make a case that fits a board you don't have yet: the shape of the various board releases did change a bit.

I'm willing to do that.

(also, whoever is pressing the "remove reputation" button on all of CraigIX's posts shouldn't do that. he is not deserving of -32 reputation)

I think this is the "late developer board" option. Only with production model parts shipped. It's not that weird a suggestion when you think just bare boards have been previously shipped out to selected devs.
I'm actually on the fence about whether I'd appreciate just the board being shipped and then the case later... sure it would be useful but we are "almost there" with the waiting so I kinda want the whole Pandora experience.... hmmmm

Don't get overexcited, there is not that much you can do with a bare board.
