i know that Square was planning Chrystal Chronicals for the DS, and i already have a DS. At the moment I don't plan on buying a PSP, but i wonder, if Square was to remake FF7 or FF8 for a portable, which it would be and that would really push me towards the psp if they were made for that.

Of course they will, they are already releasing a Movie based on FF7 for PSP.

If they didn't add a game it would be a waste of a brilliant oppertunity.

there is also a FFVII game in development, crisis core.

I have no interest in the PSP. Commerical games are too expensive, Sony's media card prices are extortionate, and none of the games I've seen interest me in any way.

afaik the psp and ds games aren't too differently priced are they?
use a different brand of media card, thats what i plan on doing.
none of the games interest you? what interests you on the DS?

I have been doubtful of PSP since the beginning but seeing in action really does mean I have to swallow my pride.. Now I have to choose.. a new TFT or a PSP :'(

Everyone who says they have no interest in a PSP is bull. I must admit that reading reviews and looking at pictures is crap. But once you see one, well its hard to describe. Like craigix said its like holding a piece of the future. And the games definately appeal to me while the only DS game I would bother playing would be Mario DS.

HERE HERE! SEGA (or should I say Sammy?) give us a new game gear! (also was way better than the GB and GBC and years ahead to)

As much as i dont want people to think im a fanboy all i have to say is that DS and PSP are for different areas of the gaming market. PSP for older gamers and DS for Kids and also adults. I haven't tried psp but i would like to see how it handled but i think i will stay with my ds.
PS sega should come back and kick both sony and nintendo's asses in the handheld market. Go SEGA!

You don't want people to think that you are a fanboi? But you are. What clued me in? how about all of that Nintendo advertizing in your sig and Avatar etc. ;)

When the PSP is widely available the Ninty Fanboiz will need alot of willpower to resist.

srry but even though i've NEVER had a Sony Console..
I gotta go for the PSP..
much rather have one HUGE ASS screen than two little ones...

plus the PSP games interest me more.. especially Ridge Racers - so much better looking for PSP!

anyway.. any plans of releasing burnout 3 for PSP as it's by far my favorite racing game and i'd by the PSP in an instant if so... well, once I got the money that is

Correct DaveC Nintendo fanboys always try to deny it. I wouldn't mind if they would stopped trying to convince me that Nintendo is better, but nintendo fanboys are extremely annoying and ignorant. You see me advertising for the PSP??? I did this thread to piss off Nintendo fans.

@ tekt5 good news. Burnout is coming to the PSP!!! It will rock hard as will GTA :D

@ DaveC again, yep you seen the konami fps I think its called coded arms, It's so cool!!!!!! Also Ghost in the shell fps is coming out :D :D The PSP is just too good to be true. Excuse me but I'm going back to some ridge racers :p

DS for kids and adults?? LOL I think its one or the other not both. If it is both it fails miserably on one of them and I think you can guess which one hm?

PSP is aimed at 18-36 so at 20yrs old I think it fits me perfectly. While the DS looks, to put it in a word. Lame.

Did I ever mention I was interested in the DS? :p I said some of my friends are, so I'll have to ask them.

Everyone who says they have no interest in a PSP is bull.

I've only ever owned one handheld: a GP32. I really do have no interest whatsoever in the PSP.

Saying the PSP has no interesting games, or even more pretentiously, to say that it WONT have any interesting or good games, is like saying the PS2 has no interesting or good games. If you can go so far as to say that about the PS2, then you aren't really what I'd even consider a gamer at all. PSP will have, basically, the same kinds of games, and all the same major franchises, I'm sure, as the PS2. And PS2 has just about every type of game covered in one way or another.

I would count on just about every big PS2 franchise making it over to PSP in one form or another.... that's quite a big legacy. There is sure to be a ton of variety and just about something for everybody. Third party support is already HUGE for the PSP, with way more 3rd party titles announced, and more games coming out sooner, than what's out or coming for the DS.

The ONLY things the DS has going for it are the dual screens, the touch screen (both of which are questionable as actual 'advantages'), and the nintendo first party titles. Fanboys need to STOP denying already. DS isn't going to be another gameboy, stomping over any possible competition and owning the market all to itself. DS is gonna be more like N64 all over again. Well at least then we can look forward to lots of good wrestling games......

By the way, PSP games should be going for about $40 each when they come here. DS games are $30 or $40 depending what you're getting and where you're getting it from. People don't seem to realize or acknowledge that they are only so expensive now ($50-60) because they are import only and getting a fat premium on them just like the system. Has anyone bought an import copy of wario ware for the DS? Betcha paid at least $50 for it.

Even IF they do retail for $49.99, it's not like you're getting cheated. Handheld games have always gone for cheaper than console games because it was understood that those games would not be as good, complex, as much content, etc, as the equivalent console games of the time. With the PSP, you are actually getting games that are just shy of being PS2 games, so if you're paying $10 more than you pay for a DS game, believe that you are getting your moneys worth.

BTW, I have Metal Gear Acid and have been playing the hell out of it. I gave a pretty detailed write up in the other PSP topic on this board, the one that says good news for homebrew or something like that. Long story short it's very good, and not hard to enjoy at all if you dont' read Japanese, IMO.

Well im going for neither, as both are far too big to be called properly portable for my liking. I think they have both missed the point

For the time being i'm sticking with a good ole nintendo SP withflash cart.

Now that is portable gaming, fits snugly in the pocket of my jeans , with all my games that i want to play on 1 cart (in the device :p ), and the screen nicely protected. When i go out the house i need only grab the device and shove it in my pocket. One of the reasons i don't use my gp32 apart from when i go away is because if im not wearing a jacket or a bag with deep pockets theres no point in taking it out with me.

Which one you go for will down to own personal prefernece, Mine being portability and durability :p... and because of this there will probably be a never ending barrage of arguments over the two.

Personally i see them both offering 2 different experices, pick up and play short burst of fun VS serious ps2 gaming and movies.

Hence out of the current two if i were to get one.. im swayed slightly more towards the DS , the dual screen, have read some intersting items on the potential ideas that the second screen could be used for, pda apps, rts, a control panel, theres a ton of things it could be used for, also the carts are dead tiny so you could actually fit them in your wallet as i do with my SD and smartmedia cards. I don't but the games just look more fun, simple pick up and play, which are ideal for short journeys.

PSP well lush gfx, some great games coming out (but are many of them i can play have a quick 10 minute blast?), looks lovely, be brilliant for watching films whichj i see as big plus but... protecting the screen from scratches is a big downer, if only they had added some sort of plastic flip to close over the screen when not in use. By a case well just adds to the size, and doesn't stop scratching either. PLus i don't think the nice shiny black plastic (although it looks damn lush) is rather prone to greasu finger prints, great for good looking hifi equipment not so great for something thats is meant to be used in your hands! Also what do you do with all the discs, they might be small but i knwo what a pain in the ass it is picking/ choossing 4/5 mini discs and then having to find a pocket to tisk them all in and make sure i don't leave em anywhere.. the more you have to carry the more you have to lose ;) I would love one for the movie capabilites as the screen is bloody lovely but the portability issues, it doens't look like it would survive too many knocks.

But like i said both are two bulky so for the time being i will wait for the GBA SP 2 which may be released by the end of the year. Hopefully that will be again a flip screen and same size as an sp, if its got a decent battery life then i'm sold :)

Though not as great for portability as the SP, you can't sit here and say the PSP and DS are not portable. The PSP goes with me everywhere I go, either in a pants pocket, a jacket pocket (with the slip cover, of course), or around my neck (replaced the wrist strap with neck strap). I actually took a GBA SP case and am using that to carry all 6 of my PSP games and the headphones along with me, as well as a small eyeglass cleaning cloth I use to clean the screen when necessary, that case is small (size of the SP of course) and can fit in another pocket as well. That seems pretty portable to me. If you haven't already had your hands on one, let me tell you, they are smaller than you might think. This is the first impression of many when they finally see it. But I will agree, of all the handheld systems evey released to this day, the SP wins hands down for true, worry free portability. Tiny size and the protected screen.... just can't be beat.

Also, there are already a few games which you can just pick up and play for a minute or three... there are already plenty of puzzle games, for one, you can easily finish one full race of ridge racer in about 5 mins (and can save the game in the world tour mode after every race), there's the vampire chronicles fighting game, and even Metal Gear Acid can be played in short bursts, as it has a save anytime/anywhere feature. Also with sleep mode, it's a simple matter to play any game for as long or short as you want, put it in sleep when you need to stop, and pick up where you left off later. People have put their PSP's into sleep for over 24 hours and reported a miniscule usage of the battery from doing so.

The UMD's are not that big either... one is about the size of two gba carts. And to be honest, I wouldn't put them in my pocket... you're right that in this area the PSP does lose out a bit, as carrying many games with you will be a pain. For the system... Sony had at one time, planned a different sort of slip cover... which i wish they had stuck with. It was a hard plastic cover, that only covered one side of the system, it slid on... it was very simliar to how many pocket calculators come these days, where you would remove the cover, flip it around, then slip it back on (it would then be covering the back of the system). So you woulnd't have to worry about setting it down or anything. Anyways, I'm thinking of making something like this myself, it wouldn't be hard at all. I already made my own (actually, I designed it but my wife made it for me) custom cover for the GP32... almost like an eyepatch :D so I can throw that in a pocket w/o worrying about the screen. I agree Sony REALLY dropped the ball in that aspect of the design, not making it flip open or have any kind of protection. And if you read some bull about the screen having some kind of scratch resistant coating... dont' believe it! The screen does seem to scratch VERY easily.

You know... until you mentioned it just now, I had forgotten about the rumored "GBA SP 2". In all the fuss, most people seem to have forgotten that, from the outset, Nintendo stated very clearly that they never intended the DS to be a replacement or next step for the Gameboy, and that they were indeed planning on releasing a next generation of Gameboy as well. But exactly how this leaves the DS... well... it's all kind of akward really. If the DS truly was not meant to be 'the next Gameboy' and a new gameboy is going to come out soon, what the hell is the DS's main purpose then???

CEX in Liverpool have two in the window if anyone wants to see it in person.

...and the PSP aint bulky at all.

I finally tracked down some elusive 1GB Memory Stick Duo's... for a measley $300 US!!!!!!!

WTF??? I can get 1GB SD or CF cards for less than $100... I can get 512MB MS Duo's for about $90.... why $300 for the 1gb duo???

Anyone put movies on their PSP yet?? What's the ratio of MB per minute of video??

You might want to wait until at least the end of the month to get your 1GB card (like I will be doing).

Sandisk are releasing a special range which should retail at $159.99 for the 1gb model.

That is a bargain in my opinion.

Or, if anyone is in the UK, you can get a Sony one from Amazon for £129.99 today.

I've converted loads of movies. I use the qb4 setting in 3GP_Converter. Usually does the job. This setting doesnt gi with mb per minute as a guide - it varies it for the amount of action etc in the movie. For example, I converted Uncle Bucj and it came to about 280mb, while Shrek 2 was around 450mb I think,

I'm sure the DS will get the treatment that the GBA got and will get a lot of N64 games ported to it like the GBA got SNES games. This is not entirely a bad thing, there were some good games for the N64, plus the DS will have support from Capcom, which means that hopefully the DS should get at least 1 Resident Evil game. Plus the DS would be great for 2D fighters, especially something like Marvel Vs. Capcom where you could use the 2 screens to smash through ceilings or floors into another screen.

Like it was said before, the DS and the PSP are 2 seperate concepts for the handheld market and probably will do fine side by side.
