Pronounced HUAYPH like "why if", is the proper way.
the problem is English. English is the PHP of human languages.the problem with English
sourceThanks to English’s constant desire to steal words from other languages and assimilate them into itself, there are quite a few common words that come from Irish.
For example, “whisky” (or “whiskey”) comes from the Irish uisge beatha, meaning “the water of life”. “Galore”, meaning an abundance of, comes from gu leor, meaning “enough”. The word “slogan” also comes from Irish: sluaghghairm, a combination of sluagh (“army”) and ghairm (“shout”).
Just like "gh" at the end of word, "tio" in the middle of word is pronounced differently, as in "motion"...
And then came the inopportune Great Vowel Shift.
Yeah, when I first started reading about it, I called Linux like 'Line-ux' (as opposed to the more common and apparently more correct 'linn-ux'). People did correct my pronunciation, and I guess relatively quickly I switched how I pronounced it. These days I even have to double check my thinking to think of the way I used to pronounce it, since I think of it as 'linn-ux' in my head when I read the word these days.Like I said, Linus Trovalds said in a documentary it was Linux with a soft 'i' and not a hard 'i' like his name because that was how everyone was saying it and unless they knew who he was they wouldn't know any better. That was an example of a creator being the bigger person.
I remember when I first started using Linux, like at age 15, and a few people at lan parties would correct me, like over and over again, to the point where I really didn't want to be associated with the community. Luckily there were those there that were chill and said it didn't matter how I pronounced it and a few years later dumped windows completely. After that experience I just told myself unless I'm trying to help someone learn English I'll never correct them.
The team got fired, or they gave up on the contract? Unless the web devs got fired because they kept mispronouncing things, but that would be the converse of your motto I guess.Oh yeah, and I wanted to say this in my first post but it slipped my mind but I know of some web developers that got fired because the people they were making the website for kept correcting their pronunciation and they just got fed up and told them they didn't want to deal with them anymore. So, don't correct the hand who is feeding you.
I still do. As it is named after Linus (Line-us). In Dutch, the pronunciation is Lee-nücks. In Spanish: Lee-nukesI called Linux like 'Line-ux'
If you do not agree, start your own Linnux distro!
