Just wanted to let you know that the official preorder period of the GPD Pocket has started today :)

The special preorder price should be the same for all distributors, which is 433 EUR (without VAT).
(suggested retail price by GPD after that period is 524 EUR)

GPD are planning to ship the units to distributors on July 21st, so it should probably ship shortly after.

I've opened up the preorder page in my shop:
https://www.dragonbox.de/en/606-gpd-pocket-mini-netbook-preorder-price-gpd-win-4260416652200.html

I'm shipping from Germany, so if you're living within the EU, you won't have any additional costs like import tax or similar.

I've also decided to cover return shipping costs for defective devices - worldwide!
So in case you're afraid you could receive a defective GPD Pocket: There's nothing to worry about here :)
Of course, we're only covering them if you ordered from us ;)

The preorder price is only valid until July 21st, so go grab it if you're interested.

As the price should be the same with every distributor, check your favourite one.

And in case you have any questions: Do post them here, I'll try to answer them as good as possible.

GPD pockets deliveries seems to have some delays right now due to technical issues with the first batch, they don't want to ship units oversees until this is solved.
I was never planning on buying it directly from China, so it is nice to be able to buy them from ED now (and just did :) ). Seen quite a few comments on Indiego of folks complaining about their Pocket. Probably just a small and vocal minority, but they did acknowledge to have issues.

@EvilDragon I assume you will do an addional quality check before shipping units?

Nice little device. I just wish the screen would have been non-glare. Is it passive or active cooled? Because it looks quite thin and seems to has a compared fast CPU for that small case.
And does it come with Win10 AND Linux pre installed (dual boot)?

Active, just like the GPD win.. but improved (less fan action needed from what I have understood).

That doesn't work with that size.
From a certain dpi onwards, matte doesn't work anymore.
Remember how many tries we needed with the Pyra? In the end, we could only use a non-matte as well :(

Ah, right, have just seen that.
A bunch of crazy guys over at Indiegogo... they complain that GPD stops shipping because they want to resolve the issue?
And demand to exactly what's going on, as they are all "investors"?
And the expect answers and updates almost hourly during the weekend...

Geez, are these impatient... now there's a crowdfunded project that worked well within a timeframe, and then everyone goes crazy because GPD delays because of a real issue... I would be happy they do that.

Some guys really are weird.

Well, I guess this will also delay the units that go to distributors - but I'll keep you posted :)

Oh, thats news for me, thought it was always an matte display during all the tests.
I don't see bigger problems with high-res plus (small) matte display, you need bigger fonts and desktop elements anyways on tiny devices. Many Notebooks have non glare displays today (which is great), even the smaller ones.

huh... I thought the last time ED mentioned matte vs glossy screen he'd said that the issue related to the higher resolution of the matte 720p Pyra screen being a problem with the (touch-screen layer, or level/amount of matte finish maybe?) and the solution was using the same one as(or from the same company as) the one used on/in the Pandora..

I'm sure I'm confusing some details here, I can't remember the exact post mentioning it, but I thought a solution was mentioned that had something to do with that...

As long as you hold funds till you see merchandise and can test it, i have faith.
Really a good deal with the European consumer laws.
Worldwide return shipping might backfire if someone happens to live on the research station of Antarctica or somesuch.

From what I can tell, it's quite cheap to sent stuff to antarctica. It just takes a while. And I'd guess therefore sending stuff back out on the return mail plane would cost similar.

Unfortunately, putting the same touchscreen onto Pyras LCD resulted in the same rainbow-colored grainyness.
Only the latest Pandora touchscreen worked, which is non-matte as well.

You might be confusing two issues:
1. The issue with the matte touchscreen and high dpi
2. The issue where touchscreen needed a of force - which was where we planned to use the latest Pandora one (as that one was responsive and not grainy)

Quick Question:
Dies it still have the m2.SATA slot?
I can't find it in any specifications.
If not its Storage can't be expanded in any way which is a bad thing I suppose.

The specs are good, except that is has a fan (please Intel stop pushing your x86_shitty/need_a_fan soc) and this keyboard. It reminds me of the buttons the phone my grandma had. Hello Pyra.

I don't think the keyboard is that bad and will certainly be better for two hands typing than a Pyra due to the larger keys and space between the keys. There are only two objective reasons for me to prefer the GPD Pocket. Screen size and keyboard size.

Might still buy a Pyra though, a great device and in many ways superior to the GPD Pocket

As a user of a psion 7 and netebook, i can't really use shrunken touchtyping keyboards. It has to be the thumby-typy pyra sort.

My suggestion to all is that while this makes news, to go onto youtube and post links to pyra-hanheld.com. Let people know there is a better (for some) alternative!

I don't see the GPD Pocket as competition to the Pyra - that would be the GPD Win.

The Pocket is a small Netbook, not a handheld.

I consider palmtops to be small netbooks. Those with gaming controls are obviously designed with a specific extra purpose in mind.

I bet Intel isn't pushing anything here, they couldn't care less what SoC GPD ends up using. And what's the problem people are having with Intel anyway?

It's not like if the higher-end arm soc would also benefit from a fan anyway...
