Gp2xmess 0.7-beta Released

How do you change the volume? I tried 7800 and it is BLASTING and the volume controls don't work.

I tried Coleco and it just dumped out to the launcher. I bet it is a bios problem.

I do suggest you learn how to use google though, as from the above it seems that you don't own a TI99/4a, or maybe don't even have a clue as what TI means... so will want to steal the rom-dumps. If you want to be a thief, fine, but don't look for henchmen here.)

P.

Well excuse me... and *fuck you* and the high horse you rode in on...

The volume cannot be turned down at the moment, sorry about that. There is a bug in SDL (at least the one I'm using) where the volume down button doesn't register an down event. The code is all there, just not getting that event. I'm hoping that the source release soon will help in this respect.

Yep, if it exits that quickly (like before you get to do anything) it's the incorrect BIOS.

Ahh GPH and their stupid volume buttons, don't know what was wrong with the regular analog wheel the used to have in the GP32

If the volume is not changeable do you think it could be set to like half way instead of full power? Not only is it too loud but it sounds like it is going to blow the speakers and I certainly won't get too much battery life at full power. Just an idea.

Coleco runs at a nice speed (the bios was named wrong IN the zip file even though the zip itself was ok). If Atari7800 can get to that point it will be great.

Thanks for everything.

Hi DaveC,

I remembered something after going to bed that I should have mentioned (it was like 2am so I'm not all there so to speak). I mis-spoke when I said you could not lower the volume. You can, you just need to remap the volume down functionality. I haven't tried this yet but it should work. The volume down functionality defaults to the volume down button but it can be remapped within the UI. So if you want to remap it to say the X button or the Volume Up button you can. IIRC it's at Menu->Input(general)->User Interface->GP2X Volume Down. Press 'A' on that and then press the button you want to map to it. I'm not at home so I may be wrong about the exact names of the menus but you can remap it. Once the volume down button registers events correctly you can then remap it to it's normal button.

Also, I will be working on improvements to the 7800 speed once I get all the drivers's I'd like supported (the ones mentioned earlier). In the interim, overclocking helps a LOT with that one since it is the emulation that is slowing it down (not the video, input, etc). It's very CPU bound.

- virtual keyboard (please read the README before using it as it follows the way std mess does it)
- coco driver (color BASIC 1.0, not full-speed) coco3 is not enable yet.
- numerous bug fixes/enhancements (see CHANGELOG)

Next I'll be concentrating on the scaled blitting so I can enable a bunch of drivers like the Apple ][, Odyssey2, and Coco2/3. Also I'll be adding an in emulator clock speed setting/changer.
OH YEAH, just played some Tunnels of Doom and saved and everything. To disk - no crappy cassette for me

Keep up the good work, looking forward to Apple as well.

Oh and I just dropped some thanks in your donation box - thanks! :)

Regarding the re-mapping for the vol- and vol+ ...

Ok, I was able to re-map it to the "Y" button, and it indeed lowers the volume afterwards ... but the system does not seem to recognize the "vol-" key (or joy button 10) ... it's mapped to this by default, but it doesn't register the button press (either in game or trying to re-map it in the settings screen)

Now the bios ROMs all go into that bios dir. You say to name the same as the GPE. Does that mean the .zip file has to be named the same, or the file IN the zip has to be the same or BOTH have to be the same. Often the roms will come with a long name with a bunch of funny characters in it.

Also for the AppleII and Odyssey etc will you offer an unscaled 1:1 mode for those too? I hate the uglyness of scaled graphics.

Thanks.

The zip has to be named that way. The contents stay the way they are. If the zip didn't come named that way I'd be surprised and wonder if it is the correct BIOS. If the emulator quits out quick you'll know that to be the case. :)

Yes, I want to support that if possible. I'm not 100% sure if that is doable. If it were I'd be able to support those games right now. The issue is that by default, xmess has it's notion of the resolution of the system. For the apple it's 560x192. I assume this is to assume the "worst case" scenario which is double hi-res. If there is a way for me to detect that it doesn't need to be scaled I won't do it. Believe me, I don't want to scale this stuff either. :) It means more work and not as great display. But if that's my only choice to get those drivers going I'm going to have to do it.

~telengard

I think Apple games were all like 320 x 192 or something like that. Also I can't imagine that Odyssey2 was more than 320 x 240.

Yep almost all Apple games I've played are that resolution. I'm not exactly sure why mess defaults to that resolution. As for the odyssey, I had compiled the driver and it had crashed in the same way the others do when they are trying to use a resolution higher than 320x240. I just checked and the odyssey has a resolution of 160x240 so that should be just fine. I will look into that more. I had seen the crash and chalked it up to the resolution and figured I'd look at it after the blitting code is done. Hmmmm......

My bios are not already zipped so I have to do it. They are part of one large archive so I will have to take out and re-zip and name it. I don't know if the name inside the zip is correct or not.

Also what is a TI-83, TI-85, TI-89 etc? the place that I have bios has those but no TI-994A.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. The bios directory in the gp2xmess package should be empty. Those I believe are calculators, someone asked me to port an emulator for one of those not too long ago. So the archive you have has all those directories in it but not ti99_4a? Chances are there are not the mess compatible ti99_4a BIOS roms.

The TI-8x Graphing calculator series are great and actually have some good games programmed for them. ;)

Yep, I mentioned previously in this thread that unfortunately that particular button doesn't register events correctly. I'm hoping the next update to either open2x or the official SDL libs from GPH will address this. The code is there to support *all* buttons, but certain things don't work 100% in the libs from what I can tell. Timers also seem to be an issue. You won't be able to do anything with that button until it's fixed in the libraries. IIRC the joystick click might also suffer from the same thing. If you search the dev forums you can find some posts about it.

Bugger - I believe it also does not work. I wanted to map Enter to the click <_<

Hi remowilliams,

Thanks for confirming what I (unfortunately) suspected. Other developers have observed the same thing (vol down and joystick click not working) I'm hoping that there will be a release soon that fixes these issues. I will look at open2x's CVS to see if SDL 1.2.9 has been finished yet.

You are the 2nd person to say that. Some fella in a different area on these forums gave me a link to an emulator. Maybe someday I'll have some spare cycles to port that. :)

I am REALLY looking forward to this one. I have never seen a handheld with Atari 7800 emulation. We now have almost all Atari systems covered that are possible. We have 400/800, 5200, 7800, Lynx, and Atari-ST. We almost had 2600 but that emu had no sound so I can't count that one yet.

Now for other obscure systems hopefully someone someday will port Cybiko, SuperVision, Game.COM, Bally astrocade, Intellivision, Channel F :p

Good work, and I hope for the best.

Atari 7800 is actually pretty good right now and will only get better. As far as I can tell Intellivision is broken in mess, nothing loads at all. A month or two ago I contacted the author of Bliss asking if I could port his emu to the gp2x and didn't hear anything back. It's a very windows centric emulator from what I could tell so it would be a TON of work. I'd probably be better off trying to help out w/ mess's INTV issues. Those others sound interesting. I'm pretty sure mess supports the astrocade and channel F. The Odyseey2 driver is enabled in the current build, going to test it out tonight.

Yeah, I wasn't really asking you to do those others it was really just a comment that some of these would be cool to have someday.

I would be happy if the ones you have enabled now got to the point where they ran at full speed with sound and nothing more, although Vectrex would be cool :p

As far as the volume, howcome it works in other emus? It uses the same SDL thing right? Or is it a problem with MESS code?

Thanks again for everything.

Yep it uses SDL. It doesn't seem to be a mess issue since I got the same behavior in the file dialog that comes up for the a7800 driver. It could be the version of SDL I'm using although I haven't found a different version. There are other devs who are experiencing the same thing. Over the weekend I'm going to investigate it though.

I'd like to get Vectrex going too. Hopefully it will run well...

The thing with Vectrex is you have to ignore any floating point with the vectors and change to integer I think. Squidge did a kind of a alpha one for the GP32 that worked pretty good. Maybe he could give some pointers.

Quick question on Colecovision got the bios and title screen comes on saying

TURN GAME OFF
BEFORE INSERTING CARTRIDGE OR EXPANSION MODULE,
then goes blank

any ideas?

Actually, I'm the first. I WAS the one who sent you the link. XD I just felt like since they were brought up in the topic by DaveC, I should give a good word about them for those who have never heard of them.

Hi YS_BOOK_I_II,

So you get the intro screen and then after how long does it go blank? Does it go back to the main gp2x menu? When the system comes up like that, you need to then "insert" a cartridge by pressing the left shoulder button and then selecting File Manager. After selecting a cart, the machine will automatically reset w/ that cart in it. If that doesn't work for you we can try other things but if it gets that far that means the BIOS is OK. I have yet to see a blank screen.
