Gp2x Problems Megathread

Received mine this lunchtime..... and initially very pleased with it.. but....

I'm having wierd problems with mine now - occasional hang on startup - sometimes on plain white screen, sometimes when loading firmware (black screen) and sometimes on loading apps panel (green).

Also having major problems with movie files. When I first had it I transferred some xvid files to the mem card, and when I tried playing them I got a split second of video then the unit would hang, and sometimes get major screen corruption - only way to recover was power off the unit. Seemed very reluctant to boot up properly a few times immediately after that too...?

Upgraded to latest firmware/apps, and movies played great!!!!

...and then after a very short while it started doing the same again. :(

Fresh batteries - no joy. Complete reflash of firmware and apps - seems to be ok again....

......and then starts playing up. Screen corruption on playing vids, reluctant boots afterwards. Was starting to thing the vid file was corrupt, but it plays it ok intermittantly which is very odd? Powering off completely and removing batteries doesn'y help either...

...games, mp3 etc still work fine though. If it was a pc I would be thinking theres a problem with the gfx card overheating..... anybody else have similar issues??

A demo movie that was supplied on the cd that came with the unit also had the same problems - working one minute, then locking the unit up the next... :(

Maybe it doesn't like your SD card. Try booting without a card in the slot. Mine hangs too sometimes but only on the green screen.

Your other problems could also be SD card related. What brand are you using?

It's your SD card ... I get the same symptons, randomly.

I'm using the card that I bought at the same time as the unit using the "buy 1gb card for extra £40" or so when I ordered online...

...its an "Integral" Brand, MLC 1GB Card?

Just put fresh batteries in again and its all working fine once more. So I checked the others, and according to the units battery level checker in the settings menu, they are "empty"... whereas the fresh ones are "full".

Surely this can't be right? I have gone through the batteries that came with the unit (which may well be some cheapy brand as they tend to be), and THREE sets of "Duracell PLUS" batteries in an afternoons configuration, flash upgrade and testing?

Not to mention that I actually used a flash ram card reader on pc, so only actually used the unit to try things (and not just sit there transfering data through its USB port).

.......scratch that, its just locked up on startup again with fresh batteries. Arrgggh!

Also nothing appears to be happening when I plug in the usb cable either - windows doesn't find any new hardware etc. Tried all the available USB ports on my machine (about 8 in all!) in case some are powered and some not, and nothing??? Also in the settings menu it seems to be constantly saying that usb "is connected", regardless of whether it is or not?

Also found a spare usb to micro usb cable that came with my camera just to check whether its a cable fault, but nothing happens when I use that one either.

This is starting to get very enfuriating! :( And it seemed all so promising when I first unpacked it at lunchtime. :(

Wait a minute ... you're not using rechargeables?????

THERE's your problem! The 2X is a power-hungry beast ... get a set of energizer 2500mAh rechargeables.

man all of those problems sound very bad :(

i thought so before i bought one. but having bought one, i can say the gp2x.. is completely worth it. the battery troubles are pretty much all that affect me (and a weird sound bug, but thats more of a nuisance/amusing foible). the battery life can probably be fixed in later firmwares with various optimisation tricks.

I get a hang on startup almost never. I only get it if I try and remove the SD card while its booting.

OK, I gotta know, how badly does you unit flicker? I can use the cpu/lcd-tweaker to tweak the screen, so that no waves or anything appear... But there is still a flicker. :(

It's hard to explain how bad it is... Anyone used to own a BLU+? Excellent screen, only when overclocked did waves appear. When used as it was, the scrren was crystal clear. 2X, no matter what I do, there's allways this... shimmer on the screen. Something I'd usually think would be because of electrical interference.

A gray test.bmp shows it well, like this:

If this is how a normal, working 2X is supposed to work/look... No 2X for me. My eyes hurt... :(

Isn't it about time to unsticky this thread? 32 replies hardly seems a megathread anyway.

edit: of course, now it's 33 replies and well on its way to megathreaddom :)

My eyes started tearing once when i was tired...
But then again, i was using the pdf reader zoomed in once (text was 3 pixels high lol)

The LCD Tweaker pretty much solved it for me, it was the blinking that was causing the problems apparently :)

Sorry everybody, I know I'm lame, but the mention of headache-inducing LCD flicker is the only thing holding me back from grabbing one. I'd like to imagine myself being a dev, but realistically with work so nasty I'd probably mostly use it to watch anime on the elliptical machine on the gym.

What do you think? Is the flicker solvable? I had heard that it was noticeably bad on the .29 firmware and that everyone was hoping for a fix with the .30. How bad is it?

There is absoloutely no flicker on mine - I think it might have been an early edition model.

Allan.

The tweaker can rid you of the blinking problem almost completely, yet to be frank, the screen is then still less friendly to your eyes than the one of the GP32. And there are also the scanline problem, which does not add to the visuals of the device. To sum up, the LCD is quite usable to me (and I have got quite sensitive eyes) and if the scanline problem gets solved in firmware, it will be almost as friendly as the GP32's one.
