i preordered the gp2x from lik-sang with a 1 gb sd card really excited and everything hoping that the existing issues would be fixed by the time the "second editions" came out. but now... i don't know. is buying the gp2x in the first place really worth it?

the reason i want a gp2x was because i wanted a portable means of playing old school games. i'm an old school gameaholic. but i keep reading that the gp2x has many, many issues that will never be fixed that make old-school gaming on it very unenjoyable, to say the least, the main one being the messed up joystick.

and just now i read that gba emulators will never be run at full speed, which was one of the major incentives i spent money on a gp2x in the first place: gba emulation.

i don't know guys. what do you think? should i just get my money back from lik-sang and iono, spend it on a ds (which i have heard seems to have many many good games)?

:( any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

If you bought it for GBA then yes return it. That won't happen at a playable speed with sound for a long time, if ever.

if you want GBA games, I'd get a DS... for one thing, the GBA is still a commercial system, so it isn't really a justifiable emulation target... for another, it's spec is fairly high, so it'll be at least a while before it's emulated properly (if at all)

if you get a supercard for the DS, you can play Nes, Master system and gameboy games anyway, so there are some emulation possibilities, though megadrive emulation and snes emulation aren't likely (snes emulation is there, but it's worse than the early gp2x ones)

if you're more interested in general oldskool gaming, the GP2x is a great choice, with mame, megadrive, GBC and Lynx emulation already working very well, I'd go for the GP2x over the DS any day... the joystick isn't perfect, but it's not ruined my gaming enjoyment at all.

is there any place doing joystick mods?

:) thanks for the reply.

how well off is snes and gbc emulation?

SNES: NOt too shabby, without sound ... with sound ... meh.

GBC: Coming along very nicely, nearly full-speed, sound and save states.

For me, it's worth every penny .. we have full-speed, full-sound Genesis (DrMDx) ... MAME, Atari 800, C64 and just recently, Atari 2600 (port of Stella) OOO, Exult (interpretor for Ultima VII)

Hope my post helps :)

Edit: I modded my joystick as did others, very simple ... do a search for "retrocon" here, and you'll see :)

I think you mainly have to WANT to be part of a growing community to support the GP2X. It has its flaws... but they will all be fixed soon. As for purchasing it for a specific console emulator... well... just go by the actuall console.

I got my GP2X because it wasn't something that just played games... it was something that could involve me.. somthing I could learn to develop for.. something I could eventually release a crap game on ;)

I am happy with my GP2X... that said.. I can totally understand ppl not being happy with it for whatever reasons.

Bottom line is this: No other console will have such a wonderfull, supportive, creative and exciting community as the GP2X.

i have full confidence GBA will easily make playability

and what are you on about Dave "not a justifiable emulation target" ?

and what exactly justifies something being emulated? what kind of pills are you on?

Anyway...

By not justifiable he's saying that the GBA is still a commercial platform, money is still being made off of it and games are still being made for it. Of course, Nintendo still makes money off NES games blah blah etc. but you get the picture.

I won't speak for him, but rather ... for myself :)

I'm a damn dirty pirate, but I'm very lazy. Thus, I bought a flashcart for all my GBA-theft needs; it's pretty much hassle-free, and plays the games on the hardware they were intended for. For me, emulation of GBA is pointless.

Edited for (horrible) spelling

You are exaggerating here. The stick isn't ideal but with some software help will behave better. The other bigger issue is lcd's interlacing what is looking like another dumb mistake in a firmware. Should be fixed by just software update probably. But it's your call.

If you want gba then just get one.

If you want 3d games then get PSP.

if you want weird stuff then get DS.

If you want mp3/ogg/videos and everything else (including troubles too :D ) then get gp2x.

You heard or you know? Keep also in a mind that DS's software is mostly commercial one - you will have to spend money on it. All this means you should reconsider your needs. If playing some arcade games is all you want then plain GBA will be more than sufficient. If you want some of DS's "different" titles then you should get DS of course.

Are you fucking kidding me? If this guy wants a GP2X mainly for GBA emulation, I get the feeling that with a DS he isn't going to spend money on shit but a supercard and a passme.

Maybe it's just me, but the gp2x SNES emulator always crashes a few minutes into play, I can't really say it's playable.

maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, but I've tried a couple of games, at default clockspeed.

It's the emulator .... needs some work.

Then why he should get DS and why I should be assuming that someone is going to do such thing?

After all I was just giving my very own opinion and nothing else. Am I a perfect fairy or what?
