What programming languages, libraries, compilers, etc., would you all recommend for a newbiew game designer? I am interested in creating a Quake-esque shooter set in Poland, but that's not really the point at the moment. ;)

Any help would be appreciated.

Use ooPo's toolchain. That's easy to set up if youre using linux. otherwise andlinux is easy if you use windows.
you can also use oopo scripts with andlinux if you want

Yaustar, I am learning how to at the moment. I'm fairly good in CSS/HTML/XML at the moment, and I've delved a bit into python.

Donny, I may end up doing that instead. I'll have to see how much modification my plotline and characters will require.

For the rest, thank you for your suggestions.

If you are still learning at the moment, then it is best not delving into console development just yet.

Learn C with console apps. Understand the basics fully: Variables, iterative loops, decision branches (if/switch), functions, pointers, memory management. The move onto an API (SDL is probably best as it is cross platform) then go to console hardware.

You will be chucking yourself in the deep end otherwise and probably end up drowning especially if you plan to produce a 3D engine.

Hah, I know, I just want to get the resources ready so that I can plan a natural progression. This will be a long, arduous process.

For a quick start on a dev environment in windows, grab Codeblocks or DevCpp. That will get you started for learning to program console apps.

In linux you could try kDevelop, but using a decent text editor like kate might actually be a little less intimidating.

I'd recommend learning in linux, to be honest, especially if you're hoping to move onto gp2x development. It's usually very easy to get hold of build tools and libraries that you need in a linux environment through the package manager.
