I'm after a 3D card upgrade from my Geforce2 GTS 64Mb

After talking to various people in the know, the best thing around the £100 mark is the Geforce Ti 4600, the 4800 is less powerfull and a "dressed up" 4200. Whereas the early FX cards are designed for DirectX9 features and aren't as fast (yet?)

Does anyone out there agree with this? Or any insight into the best card to get....

ive just bought a 128MB DDR GF 4 Ti4200... Ill let u know how it performs when I get it... I have been told that It will Work Good on DOOM 3 :D

Well the Ti4800SE is a GF4 Ti4200 that is just runs at 8x AGP, as opposed to 4x. This makes very very little difference, perhaps 1 or 2% in terms of frame rate. The Ti4800 standard is a Ti4600 which runs at 8x AGP, again it's only a 1 or 2% gain on the Ti4600 model.

Ti4200 64MB cards have faster memory than the Ti4200 128MB models (500Mhz DDR versus 444Mhz DDR). Because most games don't require 128MB of video memory, it's better to get the 64MB version which has less but faster RAM.

The Ti4600 was and still is a very good card. Reliable, compatible and even today is still very quick if you're not using full-scene anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

You should be able to pick up a GF4 Ti card for around £50 second hand.

The GF FX range is rather interesting. The FX5200 and FX5600 are both very poor when compared to similar cards in the same price range. They are not particularly quick at all, and despite supporting DX9 features, both cards will be too slow to take advantage of any DX9 effects used in games.

The FX5800 was a short lived card, made in very limited numbers. It performs similarly to a Radeon 9700 but was quite a bit noisier. It's not a bad card, but you would almost certainly have difficulty tracking one down, and in any case the Radeon 9700 is a better bet.

The FX5700 is also not a bad card, it is mid-range and should cost around £130.

The FX5900 and the FX5900LX are both very good cards, PC world were selling the LX model for £90 on boxing day last year! Excellent value.

In conclusion, for best bang for buck at the lower end of the market look out for a second hand GF4 Ti.

dazman you're a diamond! I think that covers it all.. I'm checking ebay for bargain Ti's, I'm hoping this will enhance my UT2004 performance, can't get enough of the onslaught matches....

thanks again :)

And I recommend getting the 128MB DDR Version As Games like UT2003 / UT2004 Work better with 128MB Cards and Future games will run faster on 128MB cards in my opinion.....

I meant you might be able to pick up a Ti4400/4600 for £50, the Ti4200 you might be able to get for £40 or so. Interesting point about the 128MB version. It used to be completely cut and dry when the Ti4200 was released - the 128MB was slower full stop. Perhaps the 128MB version is a better investment; but, IMO, any games requiring 128MB of RAM will run too slowly on the Ti4200 anyway...

I've changed my mind somewhat and ordered myself an FX5900 card, seems to be a pretty damn good price from komplett at £117 - I wonder if they've screwed up again!!!

Eat your heart out Steve-O!!! :D
Reason I went for Ti4200 for £57 was cos of the Price... I would never spend over £100 on a Graphics card :D...
