Eh? What? Ugly? Well even if it was.. its not for looking cool with - that's an ipod you want, or a classy haircut... and the resolution, is it too small? Or is it simply because its not widescreen? Most things that run on it are much better with the 4:3 aspect and very few things need more res, a lot are in fact natively 320x240. Okay so maybe the movies are a bit titchy, but like an mp4 player with a screen as big...I don't want to buy a GP2X because its ugly, I don't like the resolution
Let me guess.. Never seen a GP2X in person? Never seen the screen? Never used the stick? That's what I thought.TLJRyan posted on Mar 14 2007 at 03:48 PM said:This kind of sucks. I was holding out for a mini.

If you only buy consoles you find aestetically pleasing, whatever. But the resolution of the GP2X is identical to the mini (now, the dot pitch is different..), and you can't possibly make a judgment on a stick you've never used.

I like the dual core idea, and by now the 624 MHz ARM processor is fairly cheap. Slap two of them in, and pair it with 256 megs of RAM. Give it another 256 megs of RAM for user storage. And this time, slap in a 3d accellerator!
As far as controls, I would have two thumbsticks, one on left one on right. Six face buttons, and two shoulder buttons on each side. Also, go with a widescreen. It's possible for emulator programmers to keep the aspect ratio correct for classic games, and programmers will have the extra screen space to work with. Best of both worlds!
Also, a new area Gamepark could make money with would be removeable faceplates al la the X-Box 360. create a facing that can snap on and off for easy replacement. Designs or just different colors could be offered. The machine is open source anyway, so that gives the user one other way to customize it, and Gamepark Holdings a way to make a bit more money by making the faceplates, as well as releasing a limited run of certain faceplates priced higher (say only 10 of a certain plate.) It would cost GPH a dollar or two to make, but could be sold for 10 or 15.
I really hope more commercial developers embrace the next one. Payback looks awesome, and is the first game on my list to buy for this thing.

Widescreens suck on handhelds  . Especially when they are all 480 x 272. Most emus are *close to* 320 x 240 so the image would be way too small on that 480 x 272 screen. Don't talk to me about ugly blurry/pixelated stretching either Already done that on the PSP and it sucks. Plus it makes the handheld too long for no reason.
leathco posted on Mar 15 2007 at 05:10 PM said:Easy solution: rotate the screen 90 degrees. That way you still have widescreen for your movies. Also, make it 16 x 10 or 16 x 11 instead of 16 x 9, that will help with the resolution issue.
I do agree, the emus are kinda smal on the PSP screen, though still quite playable.
Don't waste your time trying to persuade DaveC -- he just whines whenever somebody even hints at a widescreen. You see, he is an emulator obsessive who would quite happily trade in all the other abilities of the console for the things he wants to work to be perfect, regardless of what other people want (he seems to think the GP2X was designed for him and him alone to use). He doesn't understand a large number of other people use it for other things, though when he does recognise it, they are of course a small minority (i.e. not so small) and their opinion isn't worth even a fraction of his.leathco posted on Mar 15 2007 at 05:10 PM said:Easy solution: rotate the screen 90 degrees. Learn to read. I never said the GP2X wasn't used for emulators, nor did I say it shouldn't be (unlike you who seem to think other uses are worthless and should be abandoned so all the developers should work on emulators so you can play your 'romz').DaveC posted on Mar 15 2007 at 05:45 PM said:What is the Gp2X mostly used for by MOST of us here (and no it it is not just for me)? Emus? Correct.
You make it sound like I am the only one here that uses the GP2X for emus. In fact it is YOU and the minority that use it mostly for "other things". So you think we should ruin it for the majority of us so that you and the minority can have a linux terminal program with a few more characters of text? That makes no sense. You seem to think the GP2X was designed for you and you alone to use.

What I actually said (which I had hoped you would have understood from the previous post) is that you should recognise that VERY FEW people use the GP2X exclusively for emulation and you should also consider that my stupid X server is now being used in the very fast PDF reader which LOTS of people have been using (there has been hundreds of downloads from my site alone)!
If I were interested in using the GP2X solely as a Linux terminal, would I be working on Open2x, working to build a better environment for games and emulators, with plans to do things like patch up the kernel to mount zips for any program to access the contents without any special code?

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?s=&am...st&p=474649I know this is going to be kind of flame inducing but I just have to ask. And it is an honest question. Why are so many developers willing to bang their head against the wall spending hours and hours of hard work on an emulator that can never be very playable due to the hardware limitations? I mean at BEST you will get, what, 10 FPS with stuttery sound on 3D intensive PSX games that take up an entire SD card? I don't get the attraction of that. Maybe a few 2D or simpler games would fare a bit better but not much. Why wouldn't this great talent here be put to something that can actually be full speed or very close? Emus like SNES (w/transparency), PC-Engine (w decent sound in stereo), NES, Amiga, ST, etc could be full speed or close to it if these devs put as much work into one of those.
Why PSX?

edit; Hope I don't come across as offensive, just sort of curious as to why you hold those views.
