This is the version that has only one setting - OFF. It was an amazing idea by Nintendo to reserve battery life. These machines can keep going for weeks and still have pretty much full battery life.
There are one or two drawbacks though, no sound, vision or game play. A spokesman for Nintendo said "This is a drastic idea, and may even promote radical free thought in our gamers. We want a unit that looks good without all the unnecessary development overheads. Our customers will see the unit retailing at around $10 which is way below the price of any present handheld on the market.
For those wanting outmoded ideas such as sound and vision, we will provide an upgrade called the 'On Add on' which will allow users to take advantage of the bonus supplied screen, speakers and buttons. The price of the upgrade is not know at this time, and will require technical skills such as surface mount soldering to install. We believe that customers would prefer to have a go themselves at installing the 4 surface mount Integrated Circuits. If the upgrade has what we call an 'off site failure', customers can take advantage of our 'OOPS' offer, we will repair the unit with our specialised TRASH service and by return of post send a house brick or seaside white stone that unfortunately doesn't have the exact functionality of the original unit, but I'm sure you agree it is an upgrade well worth the pennies.".
