Do you think I'd make a good moderator?

Do you honestly think I'd make a good moderator?

I think a new mod should be someone who has been around here and in the community in whole for a while and proven that he or she is a sensible and responsible person.

You, are not that kind of guy, although I have to agree things have gotten better.

The one point you have to your advantage though is that you seem to be on here 24/7, but with a staff of two or three additional mods that should not be a necessity anyway.

No, he didn't. What he has been is helpful on the Pandorawiki. Based on that (and in the absence of other information such as his conduct on these forums), I have a positive impression of his character.
I agree that BP is a usefull community member.

I quite like BlueProtoman.

Then I'ld vote that he become mod here. At least we would have one instead of the current none...

Well, a moderator needs to be active, well aware of the information around, and not a total chicken head.

BP does fulfill the first two, though I'm wary of the last.

I think a trial time of a week would be useful.

I also don't see BP fading away like Chip. What the heck happened to him?

If I would have to select possible candidates for mods, the first two names I could come up with are Prometheus and WizardStan.

Both are active members and knowledgeable about things going on around here. They seem like balanced characters and do not have a controversial reputation.

People that should be and deserve to be mods here. IMO.

I doubt you should put me on there. I don't even read half of the threads, it would be too time consuming... I guess (hope ;-) I wouldn't do much wrong, but you would need at least 20 like me to get the job done. ;)

Edit: Ah, if it was the list of the people who were online it explains why I'm on it. :D

First of all I'd like to say that personally, I don't believe that a poll with fixed choices is a good way for finding the answer. Also, please remember that it's not a good thing to judge people based on their age - age doesn't matter, it's /always/ about the individual person.</sanity>

BlueProtoman, I'm not going to argue for or against you as a moderator. Instead, I'll try to answer your actual question the best I can, based on my non-representative knowledge and experience and in a rather straightforward way (which I believe you appreciate, please tell me if I'm wrong).

Short answer: Personally, I believe that you could /evolve// to become someone who might make a moderator of above-average quality, but up to that point should learn to become and train to be more conservative (whatever that may mean).

Long answer: What makes me believe that you could become someone who might make a moderator of above-average quality is the fact that some parts of your behavior make me believe that you are probably capable of applying reason to control your behavior in a better way than what is generally apparent. Examples of this kind of behavior include, but are not limited to, deflecting mockery by making fun of yourself, refraining from writing facts and/or pseudo-facts into the original post of this thread so as not to induce bias, as well as a seemingly quick adjustment of your personality, which are all VERY GOOD THING™s (and I assume might be a sign of above-average intelligence). However, in my not-so-humble opinion there's one big thing that you should improve. I assume that you do think prior to acting; However,in my opinion you should expand the scope of the thoughts - examples of such expansions might include "Will my action be helpful?", "Will my action be rational?" or "What is the actual reason for that I'll be doing the action?". In other, more figurative words, less "intelligent clown", more "intelligent wizard" (you did already move "up" on that scale). The reason for why I believe that you should honestly attempt to try this prior to thinking about becoming a moderator is that "With great power comes great responsibility.". The way that people perceive and interact with you would change if you were a moderator. Thereby, the way that /you/ interact with these people can change. I believe that you have to be sure that you will be aware that being a moderator is a commitment instead of fun, and that it is not a necessity.

Again, this information is from my non-representative knowledge and experience and as such may contain traces of nuts, make you go nuts or be nuts so important after all. Feel free to stone me to death now.<sanity>

I don't think you'd make a good mod. You aren't mature or experienced enough and you don't seem to be very good at "reading" people. You're a lot better than you were before, but that by itself doesn't mean anything.

Moreover, I don't see why this board needs new mods. There's always a substantial risk associated with it - see the other board for a few examples. Communities have to be careful not to treat it like a reward and individuals have to be careful not to seek it out of a sense of prestige.

I don't think he was asking to be a mod, nor really suggesting that he should be one (mention of free time aside), but rather asking a simple question about the community's perception of him.

I think you've got your answers, BP.

No, he didn't. What he has been is helpful on the Pandorawiki. Based on that (and in the absence of other information such as his conduct on these forums), I have a positive impression of his character.

But anyway, BlueProtoman is not a realistic choice because the moderator has to be someone acceptable to Craig (lest history repeat).

I quite like BlueProtoman.

Same here! I like him, but I'm not sure if he should mod yet.

@SONY Aww, thanks, I agree

Then add "too self conscious" to the list of reasons why I don't think he'd make a good mod. Moderators who are really concerned with what people think of them are liable to do what they think will make them the most popular instead of what they think is the most fair, or will hesitate to ban or discipline someone out of fear of that person or their friends hating him.

Actually, if he doesn't want to be a mod then this thread comes off as pretty self-absorbed..

Rationale for more mods: this place doesn't seem very organized. Nobody moves topics to the correct forum, they're all just in General, including new PND releases. This contributes to some of the PNDs released here not appearing on the wiki software lists (or appearing there late), because there's no way I have time to read all the topics in General as well as the BetaTesting/Software Release/News Zone subforums on the various English and German communities.

Also, SONY, thanks, but I wouldn't do it; I don't follow these forums enough, and being a Pandorawiki admin takes up enough time already.

The first time we suggested having our own forum he sort of just went and tried to do it and it didn't go well.

A lot of people attacked him for it and huge arguments followed.

He was never the same after that, and slowly just faded away.

I do wonder if he knows we do have our own forum now and it has gone very well.

I'd say that this depends on why a moderator is asking. If it's because of a lack of self-confidence or because he/she is concerned about his/her image, then that's not a good thing. However, these are not the only imaginable reasons.

I'm one of the moderators on http://forum.gp2x.de/ and I cannot remember ever having NOT done anything throughout my life with the only reason for not doing it being that someone would no longer have liked me. Yet, I actively seek for criticism regarding my moderation and take measures to improve the probability that people will actually tell me when they think that something I did was wrong. This is the reason why I disagree with the following sentence as a general statement, since there's no way to know for sure (maybe unless you're Blue Protoman).

Actually, if he doesn't want to be a mod then this thread comes off as pretty self-absorbed..

I see it the same way, this board is WAY too unorganized and cluttered. If indicating the activity of your board by (threads about topics that had already been discussed in an older thread)/week becomes a halfway representative method of extrapolating overall activity of the board, then you're doing something wrong. This is also the reason for why I disagree with the idea that this place does not need more moderators - in my humble opinion, it does desperately need some moderators which would have to be well-organized, especially since the increasing number of Pandoras and iControlPads out there might mean that we could soon have >7 Which-SD-card-to-buy threads/week.

[...] some of the PNDs released here not appearing on the wiki software lists (or appearing there late), because there's no way I have time to read all the topics in General as well as the BetaTesting/Software Release/News Zone subforums on the various English and German communities.
One of the biggest problems this scene currently has is that while much information about the various devices that are being discussed is available, this information is scattered all over the internet in various flavors of usefulness and complexity. This situation confuses new users, which ultimately leads to even more cluttered information.

To stop this spiral movement and prevent further clutter in this forum, it would probably be helpful to aggregate the most profound information that can be found within posts of this forum in a single sticky thread in a useful way. However, the number of sticky threads this forum has is probably already too high to make people pay enough attention to any of them. When creating software, usability can often be increased by structuring a decision tree that is deep instead of wide. In other words, concolidating (some of) the sticky threads into one (and/or unstickying some of them) could help.

Recently, I initiated something on the German forums which I would also suggest for boards.openpandora.org : a "Forenindex" (~="board index"). It's a single sticky thread that should aggregate links to the most profound posts which are useful in the context of the topics that the forum revolves around. It serves two specific purposes:

  1. The likelihood of someone asking a common question (such as which SD card(s) to buy, what screen protector to use, if the Pandora should have had a hinge similar to that of the Nintendo DS (links to various screen adjustment hacks that were posted on the forum) or wether the Pandora's NAND can wear quickly) decreases.
  2. The fact that through the existence of a board index as a single sticky thread it gets WAY easier to find some of the posts containing profound information that are spread across the board increases the chance that someone will add that information to the wiki (which is the place that all information should be headed to).

Number 2) is the reason for why a board index makes sense even though it comes close to being a quirky kind of wiki itself. The board index of forum.gp2x.de is currently at v0.0.0.1 , whenever it changes I will increase the version number and post a diff into a dedicated thread so people can easily follow the changes and updates.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This post is probably too far off-topic for this thread already - should we start a dedicated thread or do you generally disagree with my considerations?
