Have you turned off the volume limiter in the settings menu?

Try a pair of headphones maybe? There's nothing I dislike more on a bus than people with glaring music or ringtones. Too much noise pollution

I allready got the GP2X in-ear headphones...
Those are crap, I mean something more like this:

These actually go inside your ear canal.

That doesn't sound very pleasant, nor good for your ears.

I got some Sony MDR NC6 Noise Cancelling headphones which were like $35 and work really well. I also often have to reencode the audio tracks on my movies to boost the volume.

VirtualDub might help. I don't know, look it up.

I'd say around half of divx files I come across these days have got ridiculously low audio tracks. Many as low as -30dB on the digital headroom. I wonder who's doing this? Maybe a default setting in some ripping software or other?

You could use something like CoolEdit, Audition, Audacity or Wavelab to extract the audio fro the video to wav, then normalise it to 0 or -1dB and use VirtualDub to fit it all back together. Pretty easy.

I do this often as I don't like cranking the gains right up to full on my mixer and amplifier to watch a film.
