this seems like a good place to ask. other then 'just because' what does splintering the user base with multiple os's that arn't compatable do for a hand held that needs market share to atract game dev's? Since many people on the forums here want this hand held to do that.

The different Linux distros will be mostly compatible, but I honestly can't see why people are so excited over Amiga OS or Haiku or [even worse] WinCE.

There's hardly any reason to bother.

I'm going to use Angstrom or maybe Gobolinux if, somehow, it gets ported.

lulzfish... why would anyone both spending years of free time building a free OS ... there must be a reason... hmmm *rummages around* ... heh apparently people aren't 100% satisfied with even Linux that is where AROS and Haiku come in...

The discussion in the OS thread got me interested in a number of the other OS. I downloaded the live versions of ReactOS, Syllable and Icaros, but the only image of Icaroslive I can find is in 7zip .exe format and I can't decompress it on my Ubuntu box. The instructions on their site said to rename the .7z.exe to .7z and it would open, but no joy. Does anyone know where you can download a live version of Aros that isn't so fubar? Like how about just an .iso?

I installed 7-zip inside Wine and decompressed all that stuff just fine.

Keep in mind that the Wine in the repositories is out of date and prone to crashes/freezing/etc.; PlayOnLinux helps you keep up to date, and manage multiple versions for compatibility.

I thought those were cmdline only?

You can use 7zip through frontends like file-roller on Linux just fine. Look around in your repositories and install 7zip, then with a bit of luck your frontend will automatically use it.

Why not use the qemu version? There is one for linux and one for windows.

Because it's fun/interesting.

Thanks Captain Obvious, if I hadn't already tried that, I wouldn't have posted. All that I asked was if someone knew where to download and uncompress iso rather than the 7x.exe silliness. Thanks.

This is where multiple SD cards come in! A couple of 4 gigs to swap out OS's, then a larger 16 or 32 for everything else!

Hi,

I know this is an old thread but...

AROS is now available for ARM (Linux hosted) here :)

Do you think it could work on the Pandora ?

Bye, Magic Sam

Hi,

I gave Aros hosted on ARM Linux a go :)

I had to install some missing libraries, like libxxf86vm.

Aros seems to start, but I have the following error message:
XError 8 (Major=73, Minor=0) task = input.device
BadMatch (invalid parameters attributes)

XError 8 (Major=73, Minor=0) task = WANDERER:Wanderer
BadMatch (invalid parameters attributes)
Any ideas ?

Bye and thanks, Magic Sam

Give Hideki on the official forums a buzz. He has AROS running on Pandora with just a couple of palette problems, iirc.

I've just been trying the same thing with the same error message? did you manage to resolve it?
