[Application] PLUM (DLNA client)

With difficulty, I think.

PLUM follows the uPNP specs and discovers media servers by sending messages to the multicast address 239.255.255.250 (port 1900). These messages typically wouldn't be seen by devices on another subnet, because routers don't forward multicast requests. You may be able to configure your router to do so - but I don't think it's something that many routers support.

I'm fairly sure that there's not much an application can do to solve the problem - it's more of a networking / router issue.

Well, I fixed it so all of the devices are all on one subnet. Btw, I noticed that it doesn't show all of the media files that the DLNA server is hosting when browsing unless I go back to the previous directory and go to the next one a couple of times.

Hmmm .. I came across this too (with PS3 Media Server). For each directory, the server's meant to provide a 'child count' of how many files are in there. When entering that directory, PLUM requests the number of entries based on that that count. If the count is wrong, then it doesn't show all the available files. Going in to a directory, and back out again, usually provides the correct child count.

It may be better to ignore the specs, and just request 1000 entries every time. I was using wireshark to see how the XBox 360 operates, and that what that does.

Does this just take for every to download or is it hosed on the repo. Long time with the sync circle.

I tried again this morning and it may be working. I don't have 3 DLNA servers. I have 1. I would still like to connect to it. I would suggest that you display the screen when it finds 3 servers or in some reasonable time. Otherwise it is worthless to those of us who have less than 3 servers.

BTW, one of the cooler uses of DLNA I've seen is this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/21/wi-fi-media-lets-your-nexus-7-play-movies-on-any-screen-via-htc/

I have a Nexus 7 and the Media Link and it works like a champ.

How do I get it to detect the DLNA server that I have running on my PC using my Wireless connection which is on a different subnet?
It really should detect it automatically. If not, then the server is not setup correctly or not turned on. I had the same problem with my NAS driver. I found out the DNLA server was not installed/setup and as soon as I did that, all the clients were able to see it. Are there any other DNLA clients that can see your server?

I have fixed the issue by doing what is now in the post that you quoted.

What media server are you using? There's a fixed-length buffer for receiving the reply from a media server - if yours is replying in a non-standard way, it's maybe go too many characters, and is causing the segfault.

I have the same fault as others, PLUM runs fine when wireless is off, crashes instantly when wirless is on. I have a PLEX Media server with DLNA enabled. (Plex has an XBMC codebase)

Thanks for this. I was aware there was problem for some people, but couldn't get my hands on a server that was causing the problem. I tried XBMC server running from my PC, but that worked okay.

However, I have just tried Plex Media Server, and that causes a crash. It's totally fixable though, just a case-sensitivity thing.

I'll upload a new PND tomorrow!

Sweet, I'll give it a spin tonight! :)

EDIT: OK the good news is that it does indeed fix the segfault and let me browse RaspBMC media listings.

The bad news is that I can't seem to get it to play those listings (Video).

It launches SMPlayer but it sits there stubbornly.

I noticed the stream url has %2520 for each space... the mplayer log gives a 404 error for the file.

The url escapes don't seem to be a problem. With XBMC (on a PC) as the server, PLUM as the client, and accessing a file with a space in the filename, it plays correctly. The log from mplayer shows:

It shows the same warnings about the double-url-encodings, but it doesn't prevent it from playing.

I would guess that your RaspXBMC's video library is out of date, and its offering an invalid link to the file (all links are relative to the root of the directory tree, so if you add or remove files, it changes the links to all the other files aswell). It should be that if you log in to RaspXBMC and force it to refresh its library, it'll work.

If not, maybe you could try accessing the file from another DLNA client (XMBC on a PC, or - if you've got an Android phone - something like Y-Player, MediaHouse, BubbleUPnP). If it'll play through one of them, but not PLUM, then I'll look into it a bit more :)
