I remember when the SONY PSP was released. I thought that it would be an up-hill battle for SONY, to take Nintendo's crown for Portable Console KING!
Well for a few months there, I thought SONY had it, but I now realize that Nintendo just won't give up. They have been #1 in the portable gaming business for way over a decade and taking their crown as King of the portables looks to be an unlikely task now. Better luck next time SONY....maybe PSP2? But then again maybe not, GameBoy 2 will pwn all things portable.
Nintendo portable gaming consoles = #1

there's nothing wrong with the PSP, it just seems Sony isn't pushing it like Nintendo is pushing the DS. The PSP has all the makings of a great portable system, i don't know what the hell people are waiting for. All i know, is between my PSP and my DS, i play my DS more now with Mario Kart. I love online gaming. Twisted Metal got old fast, and Madden 06 never works, so my PSP just sits. Plus, the games for the DS are cheaper, which is a big + in my book.

The way i figure it, the N64 didn't do as well as previous Nintendo systems, the Cube is ending up in 3rd place behind Sony and Microsoft. I suspect the trend would continue with the Rev, so Nintendo needs portable gaming for its money supply. They made an assload with the original gameboys and GBA, and now with the DS. They've lost the home console, but will never lose the portable.

I really don't think that Sony has penetrated the gaming market that Nintendo has. Because of the way they have marketed their System. They have marketed their product as a Multi Media Unit and I think they have partly captured a different segment of the market that normally does not take a full interest in gaming. They may have a lot of casual gamers and people who like movies, email, and net surfing on the go. The people that are the “gaming market” have been somewhat been disappointed in the poor gaming choices or lack there of. I think it has been a very good strategy that they have used. You come in the back door, not taking Nintendo head on as other have done and failed, get you product into the market and then begin to feed the games. I think they have thought this one through. Maybe soon you will begin to see the games. It has taken the DS a year before the games began rolling out for this great little system. I hope I am right about this. I have yet to invest in a PSP because of the lack of games. I do know those that own a PSP and they have been waiting for games and have been discouraged. That's just the way it looks to me. Who knows they might just topple the giant. ;)

your right Dark, i never thought of it that way but what Sony is doing is what Nokia should've done with the N-gage. The N-gage went head on with Ninty and we all know what happened. They began to market their phone as a "Gamers" phone but to late. Had they done that from the beginning, they probably would've done a bit better, they wouldn't have jumped ahead of nintendo , but i bet they would've had more support.

isn't the psp making it pretty big with those UMD movies?

The UMD movies seem to be very popular. I am seeing stores beginning to fix a section in the DVD area and making a lot of room for them. Space on a shelf is hard to get in a store unless it is a money maker. I personally don't like watching a movie on a little bitty screen. I would rather be laid back with my feet up hugging a big bowl of popcorn and watching a large screen. But that is just me. :) The movies are not a sell point for me.

Ive tried the PSP a couple of times and I thought it akwwad and just bland. The DS though has some awesome games....phoenix wright, nintendogs, MarioKart, Sonic, etc.

Ya. Nintendo's DS is number one seller in japan and america for like 3 months strait now (famitsu and other sources weekly numbers) and personally, I hate the D-Pad on the PSP. The thumbstick is kind of akward, but the graphics are nice. But then again, control > graphics (for me anyway)...

losing interest in psp day by day, excluding ridge racer, ive played mario kart ds more within one week than i have any psp game ever, and the fact that animal crossing is nearly here i cant see me going back to the psp anytime soon, nothing good coming out for it, all the supposed great games are shit, no master league in pro evo (have i missed something?!) stupid 'power' button ( sometimes try and put it in stand by with a quick flick of the power switch, having not saved a game, then being greeted with the 'sony computer entertainment' boot up screen when i try and resume), im not totally slagging it off, just not as impressed as i thought i was 6 months ago.

EDIT: when i say supposed great games, im referring to the games that hyped up in previews etc.. example: pursuit force.

and lumines

you not like lumines? i thought it was ok, why did some magazines kind of make out it was a rythm/music based puzzle game? just a puzzle game with music, like every other puzzle game, the music never played any integral part of the gameplay.........i should calm down in a bit, ive got my wireless router working again.

Yep, I used to think that the PSP was going to crush the DS, and I think it had a very good opportunity to do so. The DS's launch was weak as were several months thereafter. But the PSP had a big launch with some decent games, and then nothing... at all.

Starting with the release of Nintendogs (which is a quality game, by the way), Nintendo really started ramping up the DS releases, and I can't keep up with all the quality games coming out for it! Unless the PSP gets some absolutely amazing title, I think the DS is going to remain handheld king.

I picked up “Retro Atari” for my DS yesterday because it had “Tempest” on it. Aaaaggh! And I can't stop playing “Centipede” long enough to play it!! I think I need to be a part of some help group to fight the addiction. Love the new remix look. I also picked up the latest issue of “Pocket Games” at Borders. It had an article on the developer Backbone. Their latest PSP project is Capcom Classics Collection. That is enough good news to get me worked up to consider buying a PSP! I hope to see a lot of these classics come to the handhelds. :)

The stylus is the only way to play “Breakout” for me now. ;)

yep, that's the main problem with the PSP. Sony isn't really supporting it as they should. Just advertising the system just won't do(unlike with the ps1 and ps2 before). They also concentrate on their strong home console market, to not lose it to the "newcomer" Microsoft...

btw, here are the weekly sales numbers, when Animal Crossing was released:
Code:
1. Nintendo DS 132.012 | 65.341
2. Sony PSP       51.196 | 58.898

the second numbers are from the week before...

Sony is holding it's ground in japan, they are selling many many PSPs, however if you look at the games-side of view it just looks sad, almost never a game can make it into the top 10 and a few are holding their ground in the top20...

Because PSP eats battery for snack, many games run at lower speed and streaming data is no no for developers. PSP has a better graphics, but the difference is no where near as big as GB (green scale) and GG (color screen). And, guess who won the battle of GB vs GG. PS2 also destroyed both GC and XBox with suckiest graphics.

Lots of people point out Nintendo being 3rd, but fail to recognize that Nintendo is the only big three that's not bleed money. They never released system losing money and never had a quarter losing money. What good is being number one if their profit doesn't even match with their third competitor.

http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=11760&page=6

As you can see in the link above Sony's games division lost $54million in the quarter ending June 30th 05 whereas MS lost $178million in games division and Nintendo made $128million.

Yeah, in the quarter ending September 30th 05, Sony made profit of $73million, and MS lost $141million, and Nintendo made $199million.

Business is about making money, as you may know.
