When the forums went down I thought it would be a good idea to have a newsgroup for pandora. So I sent a control message to create alt.console.pandora. Its on very few servers as yet so anyone who wants it should ask their ISP or Newsadmin to have it added.

So far, I know its on Zen internet and I've asked for it to be added to Easynews... But its showing up on 8 out of the 49 major servers worldwide http://groupsearch.aacity.net/cgi-bin/p ... ting=group

I know the forums are back now but it might be useful during another outage and/or some people prefer the newsgroup format.

Cheers,

is there any other category besides "ALT." that it can b posted under? the reason i have asked is because quite a few ISP's are dropping the entire ALT. category altogether here (USA) and it might cause some problems, though i don't know for sure.

There are a bunch of Pandora groups out there already including alt.binaries.pandora

Perhaps alt.binaries.pandora.d for conversation would be a good idea?

there is already an alt.binaries.pandora on giganews, but it's nothing to do with the pandora handheld.

i have emailed giganews about adding alt.console.pandora to it's servers, so we will see where that goes.

giganews has told me they will add alt.console.pandora in the coming week, they add new reqested groups weekly. but the new group should propagate to the other usenet servers in a short amount of time.

the group alt.binaries.pandora is already there, but currently it seems to contain a bunch of movie and video binaries, nothing related to the pandora project. i'm not sure if the group was created for pandora in mind, but i guess it wouldn't be too difficult to kind of take over the binary group by posting pandora related items. the group doesn't have a bunch of stuff in it just yet, so if we use it for pandora related stuff then more than likely whoever created the group for whatever reason will probably just abandon the group all together.

i did a filter search on giganews, and the following groups are already established:

alt.binaries.pandora
pandora
pandora.games
pandora.help
pandora.os.linux
pandora.os.windows2000
pandora.pub
pandora.test
pandora.test.tpt

so i think we really only need to add the alt.console.pandora and that should cover all the groups needed for pandora support.

i did tell giganews that alt.console.pandora should be a text and binary group. most servers will remove a group and or its postings if the group isn't sort of flagged to except binary postings along with text only postings.

maybe one final group needed is pandora.support or alt.pandora.support, also i know there is currently some pandora channels on some irc servers, but perhaps we should just establish one main server location and channel that everyone has access to?

Ditto on hoping it can be somewhere other than alt.* The two biggest carriers in New York at least have blocked alt.* to "mitigate child pornography." Smooth move by the district attorney for New York. That is becoming the excuse in this country to ban any internet service a given politician decides they don't like.

Yes, split up information even more. not all of us like to waste money on outdated warez resources.

I've contacted Giganews and Easynews and they say they'll add alt.console.pandora soon. I've actually posted a message via Zen internet but its the only one I can see so far...

My choice of alt.console.pandora was simply to avoid having to go through the laborious discussion and voting process that otherwise would be necessary. But if enough people think its worthwhile I guess we could put up comp.sys.pandora for appraisal.

By the way, alt.console.pandora can only be used for text. Binaries in alt have to start alt.binaries.*

The original charter sent as a control message is :-

alt.console.pandora To discuss the Pandora handheld

Charter:
alt.console.pandora is for the discussion of the open source, handheld
console, the Pandora. Valid topics are technical questions and ideas for
the future progress of the system. Light-hearted banter is also fine
unless it turns into a flamewar.

Unmarked off-topic materials, binaries (except PGP-type signatures),
advertising (spam), excessive posting, cancel attacks, and abusive cross
postings are prohibited.

All posts (messages) must be in plain text only and be human-readable.

Cheers,
Clopnixus

I wonder if we could use alt.binaries.pandora ? As I can only find one message in it and the charter (Created in 2001 - so nothing to do with the console) is very unspecific :-

For your newsgroups file:
alt.binaries.pandora Binaries-newsgroup for pandora-users - main.

Charter:
alt.binaries.pandora seeks to centralise all binaries posted by pandora-users
accross other newsgroups (often non-binarie-newsgroups). The newsgroup will
not be moderated. Only binary posts are permitted. No flames please. Creator:
chris.
