I just got my GP2X and I think it's awesome! It's so tiny.... :)

Anyway!

My question is this:

I have no SD card yet, so I tried to start it without one just to "play around" with the menu... When I start it I first get a white screen and then a lot of colored lines. Then nothing happens.

Is it that simple that you can't start it without a SD card inserted? :p

I tried to search for this, but found nothing.

Thanks!

Hmm.. I've tried like 4 pair of different batteries and it doesn't work.. (including the ones I got with the GP2X)..

Perhaps I have to try some that I'm sure are 100% recharged..

EDIT: Tried some new Alkalines.. Didn't work.
I'll try rechargeables now.

Gaah... I can't believe it.. Now I'll have to wait weeks to get a new one..

It sounds like you have very poor soldering on the battery contacts.

From the pictures floating around of the insides of the gp2x you can see that there is an issue here. I can understand they are trying to make a compact device and as you quite rightly said 'it is tiny' but I cant believe what they have done here.
It is notoriously difficult to solder a large piece of metal, like the battery contact, at the best of times but when there is no discernible pad to solder to on the bottom of the circuit board, it is no wonder people are having problems.
As someone mentioned before poor solder joints can cause an unwanted resistance in the circuit. This will in turn reduce the effectiveness of the batteries. Sorry to put a downer on things :(

Alright.. Thanks. So I have to return the unit then, or can this easily be fixed in some way?

Some people had some plastic coating on the battery contacts - might want to check that yours doesn't have that problem.
