Yes, many old cars used a rope drive. That is a rope going from the engine to the wheel. Yes, one drive wheel. Yes, a rope.

Most modern cars still only have one drive wheel, unless they have a limited slip (aka a "posi") or a locking differential.

That Blastolene Brothers car looks awesome. I've seen modded/custom cars in my time but that looks fantastic. Haven't heard of the Blastolene Bros. Only really know a bit about Coddington Motors, and they have done some fantastic cars. I think my favourite is the '56 Chevy Impala and the bke they did with it. That color of green looked awesome.
