16days Entries Discussion

Anyone got that Romarcade to work? I tried donkey Kong but it just reset my GP after running it. I remember there was this big MAME renaming of ROMz a few years back, maybe I have the wrong set type? Not sure.

For all you wusses out there saying that Lacuna is hard, you should try on the easiest setting (speed:1 size:3) and gradually speed up as you get better, I lasted for ages at the easy mode (with a score of 11064) and as you speed it up the gameplay just gets better and better.

It's a game of skill ffs, you can't expect to be a master of it straight away. Once you get better it's so rewarding pulling off fancy maneuvers on the faster level. Definately the cream of all the homebrew games out of the competition, I fookin love it.

oh yeah, it's a nice side effect that as you beat the high score there is a little pause as it saves it to the smc, so you know you're champ - a nice touch!

Hello, i just got my GP32 a week ago, and I'm pretty damn happy with it, especially now that this awesome batch of games and apps have been released! I thought I'd write a few lines here about each of the entries and what I thought of them.

-Aka Noid (Arkanoid clone) - one word...wow! is this a remake or what? lol...credits?? :) but seriously, this is one of the best remakes of any game I've ever seen, it's just perfect.

-Blair Wars - i dunno, it keeps locking up, it probably doesn't like the multibios i have.

-BombzGP - Decent game, not really bomberman, something a little different, i think with a little time and TLC, this could really turn out to be something...

-Cave Copter - simple, yet fun! It's got a few modes to mix up the gameplay a bit, too. I'd like to see better graphics for the cave, or more atari-like graphics for the copter to make them match right, but other than that, very nice!

-Deluxe Snakes - This is an old game with a decent feel to it, what really makes this game special is the presentation. I love the SFX! (when they're not crackling!) I agree with whoever it was that mentioned barriers and obstacles in the course would make it more interesting.

-Elena - (a 3d "tube-tetris") I love this game...this is going to stay on my card permenantly. the only thing i can think of to recommend is a sound effect for clearing a line, and another for clearing 4 lines (a tetris!) Anyway, great work, man! Finally, someone's taken our beloved tetris to a new level, thank you!

-Goits of Rage (BOR MOD) - Unfortunately, i haven't delved into the Beats of Rage yet. I will soon, though, and this will be on the top of the list!

-GPAmp - An .OGG player that accepts some certain classic WinAmp skins!!! When I loaded this up the first time, the first thing that went through my head was, WHOA!!! I love the look and feel of this app, unfortunately, the second thing was, why isn't this playing my .mp3's? I know, I know, RTFM...this is ONLY an .ogg player, but it looks to be pretty awesome! I need to actually get an .ogg file to test, but the presentation is simply stunning!

-GPMax - a Dance Dance Revolution type game. Ok, first off, I love the DDR series, but only with a controller...so this should be cool, right? I'd like to mention that the visuals and the overall presentation on this gets a 10/10...all the way! Even though the songs seem like .MOD files or something similar, the music sounds really good, and is enjoyable to listen to, some of the songs are a bit too long for a DDR type game, though. However, the gameplay is where this unfortunately falls short, the steps go at totally different times than the beat most of the time, and at the end, there's a bunch of steps you have to finish off after the song's already stopped playing. One suggestion to the author - consider mapping the "A" button also to up, and the "B" button also to right like in DDR for Gameboy Color. It helps when you have a lot of arrows to do at once. Great attempt, though, i really like the video effects, although, slow them down a bit, i think i'm gonna get a seizure! :)

-Lacuna - very nice little game, not a whole lot to it, but very fun. It would be nice to have like 3 lives, and a game over screen, just a little polish, but gameplay-wise, it's
great! It also has nice options for speed and gap size.

-Masterlator - Sega Master System/Game Gear Emulator. This emulator is not a port of anything, it is written from scratch for the GP32, and is very polished. The interface is top-notch, and the emulation seems to be very good. The sound sounds nice, and there's saving and loading support. Some constructive criticizm, Screen stretch, and background changing support, would really make a nice touch!

-Memory GP32 - pretty good memory game, has 4 tilesets, my favorite is the consoles!

-Metal Gear Solid VR Missions - very nice!! the quality of this game is just great! it plays pretty good at 166...but needs possible optimizations, because it seems a tiny bit choppy to me at 166...REALLY choppy at 133. Also, when you set the clock to 166, the music plays fast as hell! :)

-Nazcadreams - unfortunately, this game doesn't run for me, i get "Fenix Runtime Error 1" :(

-Neutron Strike - horizontal space shooter, ala R-Type...anyway, this game is ok...it says in the beginning that it was only coded in 5 days, but i would've liked to see what this could have been done with a full 16+ days! The game is way too hard.

-PBSynth - ok, I'm embarresed to say i have no clue what this is, it seems to be some kind of music, or beat application...looks well-made....

-Pituka - Amstrad CPC emulator! I unfortunately never used an Amstrad before, so I haven't gotten around to trying this out yet! I will eventually....

-Rom Arcade - a limited classic arcade emulator. This plays (supposively) Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Space Invaders 2, and Pac-man....some of the most important and beloved games in history. i was playing everything but pacman, which my rom doesn't seem to work with, for some reason, and the readme doesn't state which rom files are needed for each game, it just says download MAME roms if it'll make it easier. All in all though, this is an excellent emulator, and I'd like to see this progressed more than any other emulator out.

-SmashGP - this is a loose remake of Smash Brothers, it seems to use sprites for mario from the Gameboy Advance game, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, so the graphics are really good! This has great graphics, sound, and weapons! I can't wait to see where this goes, it could be one of the best games made exclusively for the GP32!

-Tobi Drummer - I love this little program...i've been playing with the old version since I got my GP32 and this one is just better, now with switchable, configurable samples, i can play that darn cowbell as much as I want and as loud as I want... make Bruce Dickinson proud! :) ( I hope some people get this! :p )

-WWII - the game doesn't seem to run for me..i get an error "Fenix Runtime Error 1"

-Xump - decent thinker game. the object is to walk on the ice(?) to make it disappear
while the grey blocks stay stationary. Not bad, it's got a password system in it...but i'd rather see save-game instead.

-yAfl - Yet Another File Launcher...just what the name says, it has some nice functionality, however, it seems to play .mod, and open .rar files!

Well, I hope you all have enjoyed my personal opinion on these programs!
Go easy on me, though, this IS my first post, and pretty lengthy, too! :)

-BobBorakovitz

welcome to the board, Bob!

Just a pointer that Fenix games don't seem to run from certain launchers, like YAFL. If you have a multifirmware, boot into Pacrom and run them from there, make sure you've copied the fenix.rte file to /GPSYS beforehand

As for your opinion on Lacuna, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you :( I don't think having more than one life would be worthwhile unless more structure was added to the game, like different stages and obstacles getting progressively harder. The beauty of how it is right now is that you can pick it up and choose the difficulty and see how far you can get without hitting something and as there is no game over screen you can jump straight back into another game while you're still zoned in....

Yeah this is a problem with mod files because i think mods are not clean at the end.
The mod Vertigo is clean( try it ! ) and the end of the game stops at the good moment.
And i think it's a Random Step Engine, not easy but a real challenge for gamers !
It's not a real DDR. Maybe a new type of music game... ? :p
Only backgrounds are synchronised with the music... not arrows... and the final rendering is so cool.. like a movie clip.
The songs are a bit too long for a DDR type game yeah but if you have read the readme file, you can to make your own playlist then make your choice :
http://www.modarchive.com
and put your songs to the Songs directory on your SMC.
And you could change backgrounds too.

Masterlator seems to be attracting a lot of praise, technically I dare say it is great but the presentation is very distracting and the options seem to be limited. It also runs quite slowly for me. On the splash it says that Ryleh had an input so perhaps they shared code etc and we can look forward to an improved fSMS also as that's still my favoured emulator.

Great effort though, I LOVE the fact it is a totally new emulator and not a port, so for a first bash it's amazing! I really hope it sees continued and sustained development.

The Metal Gear Solid game is a great idea but obviously needs some work, it is quite slow and I have yet to get into it as it feels so different from the original. Perhaps the trick is to play it like an original game in it's own right to judge it fairly...

Only other thing I've got round to testing is Pituka which I must say is wonderful, again I hope it sees lots of development as it is already very impressive. With fCPC on the way too the Amstrad has finally arrived! Just need BBC now...

Looking forward to playing the WW2 game and the "Sensitive" clone.

Wonder what the 2 extra entries are?

I think Reesy said he wouldn't be entering DrMD in the 16 days, so there's still an open slot...

I thought there was maybe an imminent fMAME release confirmed and then another fEmulator, perhaps fCPC or another? (or that lovely Paradroid remake which was canned ages ago, I'm still gutted about that.) It would be nice if one was an emulator and one was something else for variety...

Romarcade pacman roms are a combination of pacman and the original puckman set, sorry guys, should have listed all the roms needed in the readme. But it was all very last minute. :)

I've been writing this out in my lunch break, so hopefully the boss won't see this ;)

Masterlator

I loaded 157 Master System games into Masterlator and havent had any problems as yet.

fsms can handle that amount too, but with the well known save state issue you can play a

game for a while then the save state will disappear. Also seems like the timing is better

in Masterlator.

Smash GP

This game has oodles of promise, I think its very well done graphically and with a few

more backgrounds or editor this will defintely be on people's SMCs for a while yet.

PBSynth

Had some fun generating tones with this; I tried to replicate the old school tones for

getting free credit in payphones. Defintely a lot of options and has some useful

application.

Tobi Drumman

I appreciate this update very much. It has now become a fully fledged drum machine with a

lot of options including bpm, sequencer, and load/save drum loops. Very good!

MGS: VR Missions

As long as you have a 166 or higher GP this is very well done. Its not just a tech demo

but works quite well. I think this has pushed the GP technically and is a good game too.

Probably needs more animation frames on the models, but so far I'm liking this one a lot.

I havent tried all the entries yet, these were ones that initially stood out to me. I

think the competition has been very good for the scene and there are some quality

homebrew games and emu's here.

Lacuna

I played it last night, and if its the one where you guide the central point through

tight fitting tunnels etc, then this is rock hard. Can see this in the future with better

graphics. Reminds me of an old Yaroze game. Could become a Wipeout/ Tunnel B1 type thing

(??)

Havent tried them all yet, but hopefully will do this weekend. Thanks to all the coders

for keeping the scene fresh with new apps and games.

i like your game nazca sometimes a bit buggy and jumps are very hard :)
and yes until now im not that far.
this game is made with fenix, and i want to learn fenix do you now where i can find a english tutorial i cant read spanish...

Has anyone had any luck in making a character in Smash Bros GP yet? I believe that you have to make a .pak file somehow as well as a .chr too...my characters take on the right artributes I set but the picture stays as Mario.
