160 Vs 166

From what I understood though *ANY* GP32 could be made to OC to at least 166 MHz if you do the Cobbleware resistor mod. It is just that some do not go that high out of the box. Maybe the guy that was doing the mods for GBAX has quit is not doing mods, or is too expensive or something (hence the delay before). I would think that if that is the case he could find someone else to do the mods as it is not too hard to replace a couple of resistors.

I really don't know. All I do know is they changed their mind about 3 times as to when they were going to get 166s in stock, eventually posted a delivery date on their site after a lot of moaning from me, then one day after delivery day, they told me they will never get 166s in stock again.

Oh well, I am plumping for the 160 model now, like it or not. I'm hoping I will like it :D

Correct me if i'm wrong, but if it is sold as guaranteed 160 but not 166 then would I be right in assuming overclocking to 166 has been attempted already? And it is just a reject from the 166 mods, therefore even if you used the pencil trick it would most likely no overclock by too much unless you used unsafe voltages.

That is why I would never consider buying a regular GP32 from GBAX as it would be difficult to believe that they do not offload all the overclock rejects as regular GP32. So the likelihood of finding an overclockable GP32 if you buy a regular GP32 is pretty slim.

Probably like buying a lottery scratch card hoping it is winning card when they already vet the card to see if it wins or not.

good point! you're a clever guy/gal. (no sarcasm)

I got my GP32 from GBAX before they started doing the mods... it's 156-friendly without any hardware messing-about...

... it does for me. I'm pretty fucking weirded-out when people talk about their 220mhz GP32's nowadays though... I remember forum posts saying about 180 was the max useful speed, due to the RAM bus. and the max possible CPU speed was 200 or something. so what happened?

Hi,

Sorry i'm late in replying i'm in asia, the reason we have no 166 models is that maltloaf has vanished off the face of the earth with a load of our GP32s, there is nothing I can do until i get back in the uk.

I thought the 160Mhz GP32 simply clocked to test and were tested to be reliable, where as the 166Mhz versions were actually modified (resistor change) ? Probably what maltloaf was doing, but maybe he decided ebay offered a better return than GBAX ;)

I'm going to get slapped again for complaining, but see my sig..

"My GBAX 160mhz guarenteed GP32 crashes at 156mhz, if I asked they would replace it but I don't want to go through the trouble."

I dont get what you are trying to say here. Sounds bad if you are constantly having crashes at 156 mhz , you've said 'if' you ask if they would replace it you dont want to go through the trouble ?? Doesnt make sense.

If you cant be bothered to send it back to get it fixed/replaced then blame yourself. Or are you saying GBAX couldnt be bothered to go through the trouble ?

Totally confusing line in english. If it crashes and you are saying if you asked GBAX they would replace it, but you cant be bothered with the hassle then its your fault so why have that in your signature ? Weird

I take that line as GBAX would replace it, but he can't be bothered to pack it up and send it back to GBAX for a replacement. I think the point he's trying to make by having it in his signature is that it was a "guaranteed 160Mhz", so, in other words, GBAX didn't test it enough before sending it out as guaranteed.

Exactly, thank you very much :)
Maybe it's that maltloaf... ;) (edit: no sarcasm)

Craig

When are you planning on returning to the UK?

By the tenor of this thread, I should imagine never!

I think that even though Bronze has a legitimate complaint, we should still be grateful to GBAx. If it wasn't for them importing it etc. a lot of us would never know about the GP32 (retro gamer ad, anyone?).

I wish I had bought my psp from GBAx, must have been mad not to!

My brother's PSP will come from there (i will be buying it  )

I have stated in a previous thread that I do appreciate and admire crayg/GBAXs implication in the GP32 "community". Just so this is said :)

I hope you say that in jest . I've been waiting a month for my replacement now. That Maltloaf bloke has got a lot to answer for .

The email I received implied that I would never be able to get a 166 model, not 'maybe when I get back to the UK'

Oh screw it, you've rinsed me of my money now, I'll have to make do with a 160 B)

Thanks everyone

All I'll say (and i didn't read anything nut the last page) is that if you overclock it, it uses batteries faster. I'de just get a regular one, or do the pencil trick.

Well until I manage to find out what has happened to maltloaf and console fix I can't do anything, my staff are trying to deal with it as best they can but the new BLU+ consoles have a very low overclocking ability.

Malt confirmed recieveing the GP32 batch but that was about 3-4 weeks ago, has anyone heard from him since? When did he last visit the boards?

I'll be back in the uk this coming week. Internet is really slow here, so I can't use it much.

Well, my saga continues.

I received the GP32 on Friday and got the chance to give it a whirl today. My first imprssions are that its a great little console, but the left shoulder button is broken

What else can go wrong, GBAx? I think I'm going to get a refund, cos I'm really stressed out over what was meant to be a fun new toy for my 21st birthday.

I think I'm going to sit on the money until you lot sort yourselves out, or I find somewhere else to purchase it.
