There is OSS for gps navigation and even open map data. You can leave a bluetooth gps receiver in your car and then just set the pandora on your dash. It should be really simple.
It doesn't matter what each component costs. Openpandora are upping the price and they have every right to if they believe the market will allow it. Don't forget it costs a lot more for OP because of bulk price scaling.

Mame focuses on accuracy over playability. In the long run it will work out. You really need a 4ghz C2D to play games like Blitz3D and the newer gauntlet. I doubt any mid 90s and beyond arcade games will ever run on pandora.
Of course its possible, but theres no reason to waste too much resources on a device like this.Gnome has been shown to run. E16 or E17 would be better then xfce imo but we have a lot of options.
That said you should try to search the boards a bit since this has been brought up before.
I can't find the video now but it showed the N900 running an snes emulator, youtube in a browser, a video player and audio player simultaneous. It was a bit choppy but it was really running everything at the same time. A more realistic scenario would be to only have one of these CPU intensive...
I wouldn't know about performance issues but if your planning this to be used in commercial works I would be worried. The code could easily be stolen or hacked on for cheats. You would need to write a good code obfuscator for your new language that doesn't reduce performance any further.
Look at the videos on youtube of the N900. They show videos, emulation, web browsing, music and more simultaneously. Set up a small swap partition on the SD and run lite applications when possible and you should be fine.
