Nintendo 3DS

Going back to the topic a bit, has anyone else seen Skylanders - Spyro's Adventure, yet?

Bizarre shoehorning-in of the Spyro license aside (it seems to be a completely original idea, so I'm guessing they've tacked him in for some sort of brand-recognition?), this looks like it has potential, to me. It's also interesting to see a cross-platform accessory that every individual version of the game can use.

That's supposed to be Spyro?

Thankfully not! I don't think they could have chosen a worse image to begin promoting the game with - it's causing confusion across the board.

That's "Dark Spyro", scanned in from a figurine exclusively packaged with the 3DS version.

I think my response is less "that's Spyro?" and more "that's a 3DS game?"

I've seen better looking DS games. Animates well, though.

I got my 'life sized' AR card today so for your enjoyment; a terrible picture of Mario riding Cassie my labradoodle.

I feel crap, I sold my 3DS and one day later announce the free games, no matter though, any GB or NES games I already play on the Pandora.

I've been burned by early adoption before and I keep falling into the same trap.

Yet another noteworthy comparison between Sony and Nintendo.

Nintendo: sorry guys, we messed up. Here's a price drop and a bunch of free games to make up for it. We've learned from our mistake, let's just try and get to something better.

Sony: What do you mean no one is buying our consoles? More advertising! Hire some punk kids to make them punk kid videos all the punk kids are punking over these days! We're Sony! We owned the last generation and we will own this one GRAH!

Paraphrased, of course.

Well what exactly do you expect WizardStan? 3DS was released with huge per-unit margins while PS3 released with huge per-unit negative margins, and Sony still cut its price as aggressively as they could when they could. I don't know what all this apology stuff about is either, it seems like needless pandering. They priced it too high and the market rejected it - that's how capitalism works, it isn't some kind of crime. They wouldn't be apologizing right now if more people bought the 3DS (nor would they have cut its price).

People who feel burned by price cuts are ridiculous. They didn't lose anything, they're just bitter that someone gets something that they didn't. This is the most pointless form of resentment. Nintendo shouldn't have had to tell them that they're ultimately benefiting from this move (if they care about purchasing games in the future, that is), that's just common sense.

I didn't expect anything, it's just a comparison of how the two companies handled the market rejecting their particular console: one with pandering and appeasement, the other with aggressive advertising. You are probably correct that Nintendo had more leeway by overpricing to begin with, but I'm also fairly confident that even if they didn't, Nintendo's marketing teams could have come up with something a little classier than getting graffiti artists to tag their logo around the city, and hiring 30 year old men to rap about how their mom won't get them a 3DS. I could be wrong on that though, who knows what alternate universe Nintendo might have done, really.

Well even though the ps3 was expensive, the technology that you were getting for the proce was worth it (at the time, of course). The 3ds was totally overpriced for the technology included, especially since the vastly superior vita (in terms of specs) is launching for the same price the 3ds launched at. For nintendo, they kind of needed to apologize because they basically ripped the sh1t out of the people who bought it for $250...

I don't feel ripped in any way. If I hadn't thought it was worth the price, I wouldn't have considered buying it. If someone pays X for it, they should feel it was worth paying X for it. If there are people that don't feel it is worth X and a company makes a strategic decision to lower the price to try and capture those people, that shouldn't (and in my case doesn't) make any difference to how much I felt it was and is worth.

Nintendo 3DS Gets Sudden, Massive Price Drop
Boy, those 3DS sales sure fell off a cliff. So much so that Nintendo has instituted one of the swiftest and deepest price cuts for a handheld in recent memory.

The 3DS only went on sale earlier this year for $249, but as of August 12, it'll be slashed all the way down to $169.99. That's...wow.

Next month, 3DS will drop to $170?

I remember when it came out I said it was too expensive. I thought it should have came out for $169 US. I mean $250 for a handheld in the days of cellphones iPads etc was way too much.

The problem is they blew it. Since it came out at $250 during a global great recession "no one" bought it. Now it has the badge of being a "failure" which is repeated over and over at game sites like IGN. Now they have bad press to overcome, as well as everyone saying they are dumping it at fire sale prices to get rid of it.

If it launched at $169 it would have sold much better which in turn would have generated more buzz which would have generated more 3rd party games being worked on insted of being delayed or cancelled. Nintendo really misjudged the market and got greedy it seems.

It will be interesting to see how the Vita does. I guess it will do better at first due to Sony's hardcore following and the hype but even that may fall off after the beginning after the fans all get theirs. I mean is a touch pad on the back really that compelling? It is powerful but is basically a PSP the size of a skateboard with better graphics.

I remember when the 1st iPhone was released, Steve Jobs also dropped the price by a hundred dollars after a few weeks...
