I mean I was just about to order a GP2X for $200 and now I hear a XGP coming out and im wondering should I not get a gp2x and wait for the xgp and add $100 or what.Bassically can the XGP do everything the GP2X can do like run homebrew better and more?

Nobody has an XGP. It may develop a homebrew scene or it may not. We can't say yet. If you want emulators I would guess that those will get ported, but it will be a while. We don't even know when the XGP will be released, so it's impossible to give a time frame.

They don't even have funding yet, so it is semi-unlikely that they will make it.
It is the same speed as the gp2x, only with a 3d chip and no second processor.
(it is rated as 266 on the site, but the processor is really only 200mhz).

And their whole Windows CE/Linux/Firmware support thing seems odd, how likely is it that they will do all three and decently?

Also, there is an online coupon for the gp2x for play-asia for free shipping, and it is only $170 there last I checked.

Someone should really make a sticky saying, "THE XGP IS NOT THE SEQUEL TO THE GP2X!" to end the confusion.

They did not go to E3 for funding, just to show off their handhelds. Since Gamepark is releasing the XGP Kids worldwide in August, I don't think funding is an issue.

Isnt the XGP kids just a gp32 in a new case? not the same as designing a completly new system

No the screen resolution is much less. They also said stuff would need to be re-written for the "kids" to work. So it is not the same as a GP32.

If Gamepark were smart they would have just made a new GP32 that ran at 250 MHz, added 2 more face buttons and used SD cards. It would be fully compatible with old GP32 stuff and the OS would be a wrapper that intercepted SMC read-write commands and translated to SD operations. That would have made alot more sense then starting all over with these other units that are incompatible with each other and the GP32.

Actually it has been stated on their website that the Kids version is indeed a follow up of the GP32. However you can no longer use SMC they have went to SD on that one as well, but you can use a USB device to put your old GP32 games onto the XGP-Kids.

Can you point out where it says that GP32 games will run on XGP-kids?

That’s funny in this correspondence with those in charge of the company they say otherwise.

OK guys: just got back from Game Park and I have some answers for you and some clarifications.

1. The Planning Team Manager, Woo-Seok Lee, tells me there is no reason why these should not play the old GP32 homebrew *if* you can get it onto the new handhelds via USB (there are mini USB ports), although he can't guarantee anything, obviously.

2. Those release dates are for Korea (gah!) -- worldwide, they are looking at 2007.

3. The Korean versions all have DMB satellite TV receivers, which will be removed from the non-Korean versions and replaced with something else, probably GPS.

I hope that all helps -- things appear to be evolving on a daily basis with Game Park, but the products look promising. BTW if any of you want to throw any news (related or not) my way or to contribute to DWT, please feel free to drop me a line -- we're all ears :)

I have on two occasions talked with Nathan from Gamepark he said nothing is final yet. They continue to change the XGP daily, so in respect to whether or not there will be backwards compatibility between the Kids and the GP32 the answer is not really known. One would assume that when it says on their site that the kids is the follow-up to the GP32 and as they hold the rights to do so they would make it backwards compatible. Just my thoughts.

That's what most of us assumed until we saw that the screen resolution listed on the specs is wrong for GP32 compatibility, and then JaqMs got a response directly from them saying it would not be compatible.

Are they really still redesigning a console that they are having a "worldwide launch" of next month?

Aparentially. Here is the email I recieved from Nathan this afternoon. I am the owner of Black Market Games in ID and NV. Also I am told they are still making changes to be ready for a more "accepted launch."

Dear Cole Mechm

Thank you for contacting GAMEPARK Inc.

We are sorry to inform you that we are not yet ready for the launch of XGP and XGPmini therefore we cannot send specific information about the two products.

We will be posting the news about the release date of our product when we are ready. So please visit our homepage at www.gamepark.com

Sincerely yours,

Nathan

Hello I am a huge product fan of the GP32 and an owner of a small chain of videogame stores in the USA. I would love to know how to acquire some real information on the specs of the Mini as well as how to get some signs and posters of the XGP and your whole new produce line so I can advertise them in my store. I had great success with the original GP32, I would love to have great success with this one. Thanks-Cole

C B Felterbush, you should ask them about the XGP Kids. Apparently, Gamepark is going to somehow distribute the XGP Kids offline in the U.S. I highly doubt it though.

I wonder what sort of hardware drives the XGP Kids; maybe a custom ASIC from MagicEyes (interesting in that they could have MES build an SoC for a machine with some much more powerful components), or perhaps the same Samsung SoC. Given its specs though, and probable lack of a blitter, I don't really see its appeal even in porting GP32 software when these same programs would run far better on the other units, or the GP2X.

I guess the most attractive part of the XGP Kids is its price. Developers and regulars could just whiff out some money ($75) and start developing on it. Remember, limitations breed well execution.

I know you like the idea of the xgp, but you don't have so don't tell new people it's better. ;) Remember there are people more than willing to flame and then ban you....... B)

I do know that there are being changes currentially in the Main Prossessor ang the GPU those are the two main holdups. What that means for the system in the end has yet to be seen. -Cole

I wasn't saying it is better. I'm just saying it has the potential to be a good machine.

Changes? It's all one SoC, the VRENDER-3D from MagicEyes/MES Digital. Unless they're having a custom IC built (unlikely), I can't see where there'd be any changes happening. What do you base this on?
