Cool. So what feature is coming next?

Save States?
MP3 / OGG soundtrack support?

 savestates and tidying up

Do you plan on fixing the sound in regular emulation (non-CD)?

All of these other features are cool but if the sound is all crackly, stuttery and in mono it kind of ruins the whole experience to me, and keeps me from using this.
It really isnt that bad, jeez dude ;)

Maybe to you it isn't. It seems to be a trend that everyone goes feature request crazy and leaves the basics behind. Those being running the game well and having it sound like the real thing. CD-ROM is ok but a few games can take up a whole card, not that practical. Anyone who has spent time with a PC-Engine will know the difference. For some of us sound IS important. It is very crackly, the music is "off", it is in mono, some things just sound weird like the white noise at the beginning of Devil's crush etc. For those that have a GP32 load up GPEngine and compare, or load up a PC-Engine emu on the PC. You will hear what I am talking about.

Meh, sounds great to me. Your opinion's completely valid, but personally I'd rather be able to play CD games and especially save in-game (or states). For me, sound isn't crucial on a handheld--and it's pretty damn good already on Hu6280. If it gets better, that's just a bonus :D

The sound is stuttery, garbled, crackly and in mono. That is "damn good"? It is ok in the fact that you can tell what it is. I am just hoping that this will be improved.

Yowza, my ears must be bad, because I don't hear any of that. I played Gradius for ages and it was crystal clear. In fact, none of the games I tried I would describe as stuttery, garbled or crackly (although I'm sure there is the occasional buggy title). Mono perhaps, but games back then hardly had stereo effects anyway.

Have you tried bumping it up to 233mhz or higher? Maybe that helps?

I hear exactly what Dave is talking about as well. Much to the dismay of our childish friends like ninjak, we don't just say these things to be annoying. It is clear that we appreciate greatly the time and effort put into emulators, and the fact that Vobbo is a non-stop coding machine. However, were it to be known what features really need improvement, it is the sound.

Thankfully, the sound has improved with every release. It seems Vobbo knows, or has a general idea, what the sound problem is. It is still not perfect, though, and for an emulator that uses a full 16-bit palette when 8 would have sufficed, we think this would be an important step in the right direction.

Yes I tried that (233 MHz). I tried Parodius and the sound was very crackly in spots and the music just sounded strange. I tried Devil's Crush and the "whoosh" at the opening title was this weird buzzing sound. I have noticed many other sound effects buzz, and digitized samples are missing (like when the skull laughs in Devil's Crush). The lack of stereo takes away from the sound too. The sound still needs alot of work. Is it absolutely horrible? no, but as I said I hope that it is improved for those of us that liked the PC-Engine and remembered and appreciated the sound as well as the graphics.

It is my *opinion* that the basics such as compatibility, graphics, (those are fine) and yes SOUND should be complete before running off with feature madness to add all of the other bells and whistles. If a game sounds bad who will play it long enough to need a save state? Some may, but I won't. I am also not going to fill up my SD card with just 2 CD ISOs either.

Ya, I never had a TurboGrafx, but I always noticed something was weird with the sound, but couldn't put my finger on it.

hmm...I'll have to try out this new version....haven't had a chance too....the sound in the very first version was bad I agree, I haven't had a chance to try out the newer ones though......Vobbo is just too fast in releasing them. :)

Ok, after testing the newer version, 1.05, I do not agree with DaveC.

I tested about 10 roms and in everyone the sound was "good". Not Perfect!!!! But very very acceptable.

I did not hear any crackles, pops, hisses, or any distortion.

What I did hear was that not all the sound channels are emulated properly. There is definitly one channel that is always used for the bass type sounds that is low on volume, I can barely hear it.

Good example is in vigilante, when you hit someone, the sound effect is supposed to be a good pounding tyoe sound, but it sounds like its not loud enough, I can barely hear it.

The other thing is, I think one of the other sound channels is missing as well. When the character dies in Vigilante, you are supposed to hear him groan, but you do not. Same as in Devils Crush with the laughing skull, I don't hear it at all.

So it looks like those are the only two things that I can define as being a problem. Everything else worked well.

And besides, he's still working on it right??? So its a work in progress, which is a good thing. Emulators are clearly just emulators, you can never have them perfect, because its just not the original hardware.

Vobbo, I think you did a great job so far, and I urge you to continue. You will be finding a little present from me soon (Donation). :)

Only those two things? no.

You need to listen more carefully to the music, there is obvious crackling, kind of like an old record with dust on it.

You also can't say that you can't hear that the white-noise generator it totally wrong like in the title of Devil's Crush. it is supposed to be a whoosh not a buzz like it is now. There are parts in the game that buzz when the ball hits it. That is an example, other games show this too.

As far as "you can never have them perfect, because its just not the original hardware" well that may be true but the sound on other PC-Engine emus on the GP2X and GP32 is much better at this time.

What about the complete lack of stereo? You can't hear that?

You need to load up a PC-Engine emu on the computer and compare. You will hear that you are wrong and there are more things to improve than what you say.

what did you expect in such a short time???

cd audio would be cool too

Yeah, when they come out with 12 Gig cards that work with the GP2X so you can put a couple of games at once on it ;)

Maybe it would be cooler to get the original games to work with proper sound first though.

Im going to donate a few more bucks when i get paid next week. Great work vobbo. Glad to see such a fine emu, it helps keep the PC Engine spirit alive.

On another note, my 5 year old nephew was playing with my Turbo Express (i region modded it) all day today. He has a Gameboy SP, but he seems to prefer the PC Engine games. He's still young enough to not really care about graphics, so ive been letting him play with all my classic systems. I figure its good to let him get a good grasp of the roots. When hes a little older im going to set up my C64 for him to learn on.

Thats really cool, the kids these days are spoilt and think all games look like cars !!

My eldest two had mega drives for xmas 2 years back, and love them and now thanks to ebay have a great pile of classics. These are played with as much as the GBA games we have.

Both enjoy the gp32 and gp2x as well - mainly with Megadrive emulation.

Think its time the kids where introducted to Bonk though !
:D
