Audio Not Loud?

Howdy, all.

I got my brand spanking new GP2X a couple of days ago and I'm very impressed with everything - except the audio.

When I'm playing music (MP3, OGG, etc) or AVIs I need the audio maxed out in order to hear it at a semi-reasonable volume (I'd even prefer it to be a bit louder, especially for hard rock & metal). Game sound is fairly similar - I need max or near max levels to be satisfied with what's happening.

However, if I plug in headphones I'm quite happy with the sound level down a fair bit - say around 6/10.

I was wondering if I have a dodgy unit, or if there's a firmware fix, or if it's just a limitation of the GP2X that I need to put up with?

Thanks.

Go into the system settings and turn off the audio limiter. I thought I had a problem too!

Same here, I couldn't figure out why my old gp2x with firm 1.4 was louder than my new gp2x one. Took me a good 20 mins to figure it out last weekend....

Volume limit is meant for when you're using headphones so you don't like... blow up your head.

It would be really cool if it knew when you plugged in your headphones and enabled it.

I have almost blown up my head from something like that. Just try using your iPod on a stereo and turn the iPod up so you can hear it (not the stereo) and then unplug it forgeting to turn it down and turn on a REALLY loud song.
Scared the shit out of me. It was like a gun being shot right next to my head.

Thanks, Zektor, this fixed it all up (funny, thought I'd already replied to this post but can't see it).

I think this particular "problem" should be added to the FAQ, myself - I read the entire manual a couple of times over, did a search of the forums and still didn't twig as to what was happening.

See, I owned a MK1 unit previously, and knew how loud these speakers can go. When I got the MK2, I was like "There's no way this is the max volume!". I just poked around for a few minutes and found it. I personally think it's a stupid option to default to active. If you ever flash/reflash, you'll have to do it again...that is if GPH doesn't adjust the default setting to be OFF on the limiter in the next firmware update.

BTW, there are STILL some volume problems however. For example, play a tune and while playing just fast forward a tad. YOu will notice afterward that the volume seems to have increased a few notches. Hopefully GPH realizes there is a problem there and fixes that also.
