This is probably covered elsewhere - it's in the wiki, but still not clear ...

There's talk about MK2, and the "new" version in the official release, and mention of WiFi support. Now, my questions are actually very simple indeed:
  • My serial number is 2006.02.22 - GP2XV127 00002958 (from the info screen). I think it's a pretty recent model, but I don't know how to tell if it's MK2 or not. How can I see if it is?
  • I've seen mention of WiFi a number of times, yet no specifics. Is this supported via the SD slot or extension port or USB, if at all?

Although I'm not sure how to tell by serial numbers, my guess is that unless you got your GP2x within the last day or so, then it is most definitely NOT a MkII.

As far as wifi goes, it's supported through whatever drivers are available for linux. I've heard of at least USB wifi drivers working with the GP2x, not so sure about any SD wifi drivers.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the MkII does not come with wifi. The only thing new (that we know of so far) is the rotated joystick assy, new joystick cap, and different screen.

Well balls. They fixed the idiotic Joystick design in the new version? Now I'm hoping my 2X dies before my year warranty is up, cause I can't afford another $200.

well, you can buy the new cap for like 4$ or something, and the stick rotation dosnt make as much of a difference from what ive heard.

You could always get a different cap, I hear that helps quite a bit and is easy to switch out.

If you have the old joystick cap, you can pretty much guarantee you have a MkI GP2X.

Craig is selling the new caps seperately however for cost price if you want one and have the MkI.

Well, I have one of DaveC's caps already. But I thought by "Rotated Joystick" they meant they actually rotated the component inside to get rid of that @#$!! diagonal bias.

Maybe they'll do some sort of Trade-in deal, like Mk I + $50 gets you the new one? (doubt it, but I'm so pissed off I can't even look at my 2X now, so I need to hope for something).

That trade in idea would be badass . I would love to scoop up some discounted MK1's I love my MK1 .

I never had a problem with the screen, the short battery life, or autobricking. The one thing that has pissed me off about this thing since day 1 is the damn joystick. It makes playing my old Shmups(Life Force, Transbot) all but impossible. :(

Now that I know there's a fixed version, I'm just livid. So much for the breakout box. I'm not throwing any more dough at this thing.

I'm not sure that the rotation will make a great deal of difference - better but not a total fix. It will be interesting when we get a comparison by someone with an original. If nothing else, it will be more like the gp32 where getting diagonals was fairly difficult (although obviously that is the better of the 2 evils).

I suspect that the only real solution will be to do a Radek/Bacteria digipad mod...

Andy

By the way, I've only ever had 2 problems, stick and inability to upgrade firmware via my SD card. And gadget has solved the later (see firmware sticky) so only one issue to resolve now... and then its perfect

:D

The stick is exactly the same.

Tell me, if you bought a GBA, then Nintendo, shortly afterwards, produced the SP, would you be angry at Nintendo?

apparantly the stick 45 degree rotation doesnt really do anything to fix the joystick anyway so its not like your getting an SP from a GBA, the changes are very minor.

And what's the difference between the "old" and "new" joystick caps? Mine is round and black: is there another kind?
Here's the official gallery showing off the new joystick cap:

And if you notice the picture @ the top, it still uses the old MkI cap... kinda goofy, but whatever.

That cap doesnt look so bad.
I hope gp2x.co.uk doesnt replace that one with thiers that say gp2x.
Not that I have anything against that one, but I would like to try the new one.
I can always order one of thiers if this new one turns out to be crap.

Look again, I think they used MS Paint to put the new cap on some of those pictures, very very shoddy, ever heard of Photoshop? Or Gimp?

Hasn't everyone? ;)

No matter HOW those sticks are on those pictures, the point is, THAT is what the new stick looks like.
It also looks like this: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=...oducts_id=9178&
(In case you wanted a virgin photoshop/gimp-free look at what the cap looks like ;) )

You mean if I bought an SP and Nintendo, shortly afterwards, remodeled the SP? Would I be pissed?

Hell yeah, I was pissed. And $100 is a hell of a lot less than $200. This "Release Early, Release often" philosophy works for software, but when applied to hardware, it's bullshit.

I'd be mad too, but think about it. If they didn't make the MKII, you'd still have the same thing. So in an alternate reality with no MKII, it wouldn't be that different. I guess you'd be frustrated that you didn't wait but, whatever.
