Gp2x Serial Numbers

Just idle curiosity really... does anyone know what the serial number displayed in the info screen actually means?

I would imagine the date is the date of manufacture, or at least the date the firmware was first installed? I did think the "GP2XV127" bit was some kind of version number, but it seems to be the same on all models. The last number's got me stumped, it's lower on my newest GP2X than the one before it, so it's not "actual" unit number. It's not in the slightest bit important... but does anyone know how to "decode" this thing?

You really have too much money do you :lol: About the serial numbers, I don't have a clue, maybe CraigX has. But why would you want to decode it if I may ask?

No, I'm flat broke now :eek:

Like I said, idle curiosity. Having searched a bit I see this has been discussed before in the past, but without any real answer being found.

Just for the sake of it, I have:

MK1 - 2005.12.12 - GP2XV127 - 00001284
MK2 - 2006.11.06 - GP2XV127 - 00008847
MK2 - 2006.12.29 - GP2XV127 - 00007599

I just thought it was a bit weird that the last one had a later date but a lower number than the second, which led me to wonder what this last number represented. Anyone up for bonus guru-aura?

Wrap your mind around this, dude:

(1 + 2 + 8 + 4) % 3 == 0
(8 + 8 + 4 + 7) % 3 == 0
(7 + 5 + 9 + 9) % 3 == 0

:rolleyes:

What the hell?! Can you explain why? It's not that I don't believe the method, but I'm curious why such thing is applied :)

Mine is 6246 (6+2+4+6) % 3 = 0

Which means (6+2+4+6) = 18 and 18 is divisible by 3 without a remainder (18/3)=6

I thought it was all sorted out a year ago.

The date, AKA 2006.11.06, is obvious, then the number is just a generic batch number for the factory.

I thought when I saw this thread it was about the real serial number on the i2c bus rom chip. Oh well, no hardware/software hacking/cracking today :( (at least on the 2X, I have lots of other stuff to solder ;)).

The one I got with the borked SD card slot was:
2006.11.04 - GP2XV127 - 00006405

So are you saying there might be another GP2X with the exact same number (including date) as mine?

The only thing I was really wondering was why the December model had a *lower* four-figure number at the end than the November model. All this mathematical voodoo has blown my mind now though.

Well, it's hard to believe that they'd assemble more than one batch per day, so all chances are your unit is unique in its own special way :rolleyes:

Stop rolling your eyes, it's making me nervous. They're surely not assembling over 8000 units per day.

I must have the MKII 'crappy dark screen with limited view angle' batch

2006.05.22 - GP2XV127 - 00004454

I'd love to know if other batches out there with my date have the same screen. Or are all MKII screens exactly the same?

I thought that last number was just the number in that batch.

ie the 7599th unit from the dec batch.

I've never asked though...
