I ordered a GP2X MKII from gp32z and an ADATA 4GB x150 SD card.

I've heard I have to format it to FAT32, is this true and how do I do this? (i use Win XP)

Also, are there any other things I should do?

I don't have the unit yet, so I don't know if downloading and using ROMs or Emulators is pretty straightforward. If it isn't could someone explain how to do it? (or link a thread)

Thanks,
lint

Many people said that it's the best format (Fat32); but some still use Fat.
In Xp just right click>format>choose Fat32 (or Fat).

Every emu have its own way to be installed, roms folder ...
The best things to do are (in order) :
1-Check the text files (readme) provided with each emu. In many cases everything is explained.
2-Do a search on this board or have a look at the wiki.
3-Ask users for help if needed.

I can smell impatience ;)

You might find that the 4gb SD card won't work on your GP2x (these cards are much less compatable).

Personally, I use 1gb SD cards. You will find that you can probably hold all your games and emulators on one 1gb card anyway.

I use FAT nto FAT32 as my Windows XP (NTFS) doesn't like to work with FAT32. It ended up bricking one of my cards. Downside of FAT is it is the older version (FAT16), which (as I recall) only formats up to 1gb, so if you use this on your 4gb card, it will only be a 1gb card - so you will need to use FAT32 in your case. In my case, I have to use up to 1gb cards as I have to use FAT and not FAT32. I find FAT works great.

If you use a FAT32 OS (Windows ME, 98 SE, or XP formatted to FAT32 not NTFS) you will be fine with FAT32, which you will need to use for your 4gb SD card.

I suggest you purchase a 1gb card too; it may save you lots of headaches. If you can't use the 4gb card initially (incompatability), you might be able to use it as external storage via your MP3 player (if yo have one) and the BOB (not released yet) - maybe.

YOU CAN'T FORMAT A 4 GB SD CARD IN FAT.
Of course you can. Don't be silly.

But don't you have a 2GB partition limit with FAT?

Only with FAT16. If you format as FAT32, there are no problems whatsoever.
