Is there any possible way to get Warcraft 1 running on the GP2x. Dos emulation or Interpreter. And what are the chances it will run at a good speed?

You might be able to run it via Dosbox but chances are that it run extremely slow.

Its such a non-demanding game though.. 4mb of ram and like a 166mhz cpu. There has to be a better way to play it on the GP2x.

or better this sub poject:
http://wargus.sourceforge.net/

Will let you play Warcraft2 which is much better anyways ;)

It's not for gp2x though, I see it is for Linux though. Is there a chance this could be ported? I would really love to play warcraft II on my gp2x.

EDIT: *pulls out warcraft II box* It only needs a 33mhz processor but 8mb of ram (I know you were talking about I though).
This should be well within the gp2x's power, maybe we could even scale all the graphics down by 2 before they are running on the gp2x, and that would even run faster.

I have played a warcraft2 clone,

It calls by its name Freecraft. but I see that the domain www.freecraft.org is down....

So there is a slight hint of possibility that WCII might even be playable? I just asked about WC 1 because I new it wasn't very demanding. So where do we go from here?

I think the devs are not really interested in porting this, since warcraft and the likes normally require the use of a mouse. Because that would be quite a hassle on a portable, nobody seems to think stratagus is worth being ported. I still think it would be pretty cool, but that's just me and if I would be able to, I would try to port it myself. Apparently I am too stupid to do serious programming, as long as that requires more skill than coding fenix stuff... so I won't even touch the source-code just to keep the last bit of sanity that might be left.

I think warcraft 1 would be better for the gp2x, as it less compicated input wise. Warcradt 2 could get very hectic when you are mounting an attack.

*cough* portability... wanna use a mouse on the bus? *cough*

*grabs warcraft1 box*
"386 ibm compatible, 20mhz, 4mb ram, vga monitor"
I dont think you stand any chance with the current dosbox.
Maybe one day when the recompiler takes off, but its very unlikely.

Vimacs!

I'm thinking of doing a dynamic recompiler for DOSBox to run better on ARM. What's the current status of the dynarec for DOSBox?

I've been waiting for someone to mention it! Glad it was you. :)

the dynarec in dosbox seems to allready have pretty good compatibility, through i didnt realy notice a good speed boost when useing it on my pc (a64 3500+). Afaik the dynarec in dosbox currently only supports x86 through.
edit:
An advanced method of emulation where whole sections of code are recompiled as the emulator executed the program code. When it works it is the fastest type of emulation, but it is less compatible than normal/simple so it might not work with all programs. Note that "dynamic" can only be used on machines with CPUs that support the x86 instruction set.

Quoting one poster: "dynamic" can do miracles about performance : I went from 18000 cycles/sec to 25000 and sometimes 80000 on some demoscene progs, without sound stuttering, but depends on the demo... This mode is said to be less stable (although I did not notice problems)

WiKi page about cpu cores.

The dynarec.

Maybe this is worth to look at as well.

Actually all Warcraft 1 requires is a 386 and 4MB RAM.
