Hello everybody! I've gotten a couple questions about this so here's the answer:

Craigix (of gp2x.co.uk) has licensed the source code to Vektar to produce an enhanced commercial version; a demo for his commercial release is part of the new firmware distribution.

Craig understands the gp2x community and games like nobody else, and I'm certain his commercial version of Vektar will be seriously cool and well worth its price -- but any questions about things like features, availability, price, and so on, should go to Craig as I am not directly involved. I think Craig deserves applause and community support for helping make commercial games a reality on the gp2x.

Thanks everybody!

says on the demo there will be a boxed version, count me in for that, i love vektar, it's got nice graphics which reminds me of Darwinia.

Waaait.. licensed your code to then improve commercially? Why didn't you go commercial with it yourself? It would seem strange to give it to someone else to improve it, unless they're in the same spirit :)

I hope your license is a good one.. ie: That you keep ownership for your own portion and can use it in the future on other platforms, etc.

jeff

Should be cool.. it is very cool, so can only get better :)

I applaud commercially release games as well (as I posted regarding that swonderful Payback Demo), and am fully intending to purchase a couple of commercial grade games for the system. Heck, I'd have payed $15 for the Vektar you already released free and not bat an eyelash.

I just hope you were/are compensated, either in a lump sum or per licensed unit sold.

I did not wish to produce a commercial game -- I have a job already and I just mess around on the gp2x for fun.

I have retained rights to reuse the support functions that I care about. Craig has been great to work with and I wish him the best on this venture.

Man, I wanted one of those so bad. Instead, my parents bought a Colecovision ADAM.

does that look that quite simmilar or what? :)

Quite cool to have a demo included with the 2.0.0 firmware, methinks; cool as I think this game is (especially graphically), I haven't found it that addictive for now, so I don't think I will be buying it, but then, you never know.

Congrats on making some cash from your code, though :)

I assume the competition version of Vektar (i.e. unenhanced, free) and the commercial one (enhanced, costs money) will remain separate and distinct, idd (with the obvious exception that the compo one won't, presumably, be updated anymore)?

I don't want to go into the exact details, but I'll leak the following info: I've got some funds to continue the GP2X Demo Competition after the first one. That doesn't mean demo coders should slack off though -- whoever gets a decent code base built up for the first competition will have a head start on the second one!

There's actually three versions now: the competion version (0.1), the current release (0.9) which added a bunch of new enemy types, and now Craig's super duper commercial version. I've promised people that I'll go that last little step from 0.9 to 1.0 with some very minor bug-type issues. That will happen someday. After that I have no plans for further enhancements.

very cool news. I'm glad the original version is still going to (eventually) still have a 1.0 version as i was worried that because of this it wouldn't. i wonder how much commercial games will be for the gp2x but its cool that we can have the complete choice between free homebrew and commercial games.

I'm all for commercial games on the GP2X, but this leaves me a little confused. I suppose all will be revealed when DZZ's 1.0 release is revealed, but it seems to me that his version is going to have more to attract me than the commercial version.

Think ill stick with DavCs cap....i think this one looks cheap and nasty IMO, and TBH i think they should of supllied these free of charge to make up for the completely crap design of the original one, but no they want to charge us even more.

I think the one on the GP2X is really bad, due to the joystick. Try it for the PC, it is waaaaaay better.
Thats another Geometry Wars clone

In fact, the great pyramid of Giza is not a tomb, as most people think, but the greatest, and final, game of Tetris played by pharaoh Setathemun.

My Vectrex refuses to work... :(

No, I had never heard of Grid Wars. Looking at it, it appears to be a Geometry Wars clone.

I was certainly inspired by screen shots of Geometry Wars because I thought it looked cool, but since I never played that game I doubt the gameplay is the same.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Vektar, not every game appeals to everybody. Hopefully there are some games on the gp2x that you do enjoy. Maybe you'll like my next game better!
