Hi all. Here is a new version of Beat2X (nice to see archive updates almost immediately now... :)).

What's new:
  • Combos.
  • Global theme selector ("global" meaning that themes affect the whole game look and not the song background -- btw, this feature will be added soon).
  • Added "Settings" in main menu. That's the place you'll find game mode, control mode, arrow speed and theme from now on. Any of those settings is saved so that they'll be applied next time you run Beat2X.
  • In order to go back to main menu while playing, you must keep START and SELECT pressed for a second.
  • Pressing any button while the statistics screen is shown makes them update much faster.
  • Presses when there are no arrows don't count as wrong presses.
  • "Trial" mode renamed to "Practice".
  • Minor changes.
Important: Those of you having a previous version in your SD card, don't just copy the new files into the game folder as its structure has changed a bit. If you want to keep your high scores, copy the old 'scores.dat' from 'data' folder into the new one.

Some comments:
  • The maximum number of combos reached affects the score. For now, it is not saved in the high score table. Will be on future versions.
  • In order to create new themes, just respect the file names and their format (both for graphics and sound files), and put them in a new folder under 'themes' folder. There's no need to create all the files: those not available in a theme will be taken from the 'default' one.

Oh, thank heaven. That is the one real issue that I detested from the earlier releases. Nice job.

Really cool looking release. I hope to have a new GP2x soon to start playing it :D

Ill start making a theme for it.

Btw, as you'll notice, 3 variations of the original theme are available now. All that changes is the size and look of the arrow set.

Oh, and forgot about another feature: when you change any of the settings they are saved in your SD card. Of course, next time you run Beat2X they are loaded.

When will there be dwi/sm support?
^MiSaTo^ and Puck2099 are working on that but they are working on other projects as well, so it depends on their time and when they feel like programming it.

Yeah, very cool :)
Thanks again for your great work, even though im really missing dwi support by now :p but take your time, it's, of course, your work. =)

Hmm... I'm currently thinking of presenting the gp2x at the Games Convention 2006 in Germany...
And I had the idea hardware-hack-connecting a dance mat to the gp2x, use TV Out as Plasma and let people play Beat2x :)
Let's see how this works out :)

In the Stepmania for PC, there is sometimes a video that plays along with the music and the steps. Can this be added? Is it not possible?

Not in short term. My guess is that the frame-rate will decrease a lot, but I'll try anyway.

A few minor annoyances that can hopefully be fixed in the next release, both concerning volume. Do you think you could make Beat2x save the volume level, instead of it restarting at full next time? Also, it seems like you have to knock the volume bar down to a fourth before you even really notice a difference in the volume level. Maybe if you could even that out a little more...

Again, other than that (and whenever you get DWI support), awesome game.

I think the volume level is more of a global thing that needs to be changed in the firmware, that the apps can read.

Yes, no problem about it. Didn't think anyone would want to save the volume level, but I'll do it as it is really easy to code.

Hum... weird behaviour... That doesn't happen to me, and it shouldn't happen to anyone :), as the volume bar is mapped so that it goes from 0 to the maximum value (which I think is 128 in SDL) in steps of 8. But maybe SDL doesn't do its job properly in some cases...
