Songbird

It'll have to be something pretty special to tear me away from Amarok. That is one amazing piece of jukebox software. My wife, who isn't a nerd like me, has been pretty much convinced that linux is better than windows due to innovative applications like Amarok. English isn't her first language and she appreciates the automatic lyrics lookup function, for example.

However, on windows I'm still using iTunes as a kind of "next best thing" to Amarok. It makes organising my music an application task, rather than a filesystem one which is quite nice.

Songbird looks an awful lot like a shiny iTunes with a bit more choice, so it might beat iTunes on windows, but I don't see it beating Amarok on KDE any time soon.

edit: I've just read that a lot of the developers used to work on winamp. Winamp had an excellent developer team and really did innovate while keeping one of the best UIs in the windows media player world. I may have underestimated the project.

ooooh songbird looks nice :), downloading now ^^.

offtopic:
amrok is nice, but in my opinion itunes is way better :)

btw. can amarok sync with an ipod?

Edit: w00t songbird is cooooooool :D :D, and really fast, scanning of my entire music folder normally takes ages :D. Thanks for the tip Cyclops.

I agree, amaroK is great. I really wish it was portable to windows, as I can't use linux due to it not having Visual Studio. Is there anything similar for windows?

It always crashes for me, so I'm stuck on using XMMS :p. I really like it, though...

"Yes, it's real"? They're full of themselves, that's for sure. It's a clone of iTunes, what is so special? I found iTunes an irritating music player. Its libraries to organize music were less convenient than using Explorer to browse through folders, and it took up the entire screen! It was also slow and hogged a LOT of RAM, I'll take Foobar2000 which uses 1-3MB of RAM playing gignatic files, and has a tiny window, and uses under 1% of even my laptop's CPU (Celeron-M 1.0 GHz) when running at *95* MHz. iTunes lagged like a beast on that.

At any rate, there are other iTunes-like music players with built-in library functionality-- this one is just destined to be the one Apple sues out of existance. ;)

Erm what could songbird possibly offer the GP2X?

I think that Epicenters intention is that the GP2X would be integrated into a Media Player app so that you could dock it and sync files, maybe make rom and app'playlists' and so forth...

The option is there, but I don't have an iPod (got a creative MuVo v200) so I don't know how good it is.

I'd be curious to know why you think iTunes is better, it really doesn't have anything much that Amarok doesn't (unless you shop at the ITMS and then, well linux isn't really for you).

I love the intelligent stuff that Amarok can do. For example, I can tape a tune off the radio and Amarok will find the id3 information, download the album cover and give me the lyrics automatically.

And it's amazing how often you're listening to something and notice that it's recommending you play song 'X' next and you just find yourself thinking "oh yeah, that's a great track, I'd forgotten I had that".

Anyway, I think that's enough of the Amarok lovin' :)

edit: typo

I just had to get used to itunes a bit, after a while im sure youll like it.
I have 1gb of ram, so I dont mind the extra bit of ram.
And I have an ipod so its almost necessary to use itunes.... and i really like the so called "smart playlists".
I can just give a song a lower rating and its automaticallly deleted from my ipod, or split up the playlist in a playlist for single songs and a playlist for mixes, very usefull :).

amarok is sweet as apple pie with sugar on top, it puts all the others into a huge grave along with bill gate's silly dinosaur operating system... dinosaurs will die huh?

If anyone ever gets WiFi on the GP2X, I'm going to listen to Pandora. It like, recommends songs that you'd like, and is free and cool and stuff!

And why would you want iTunes (or an iTunes clone) for the GP2X? It confuses me.

Podcasts and vodcasts can be downloaded automatically to an SD card when you plug it in, thanks to some sync software. I'd do that, but I have a very slow SD.

i concur. foobar2000 is one of the best things i have ever used. completely unobtrusive. my music is organized the way i like it, and i usually listen to albums rather than shuffling. conversions & tagging are a breeze. in short, foobar2000 is the music lovers music player.

pandora is nice :), but after listening to it for a few weeks I really wanted to choose my own music again :p
I used my old Linux box plus big speakers as an enormous Pandora radio before I began to dev on it :p (No seriously, my Linux box is huge. Bigger than yours.)

I think you're a bit confused. I didn't start this thread, and I don't like the program. ;)

if you have an i-pod (I do), why the hell would you want to waste space on your sd card? i-pods are like the size of a freakin' credit card now and have better quality sound and more functionality. I have a few songs on my sd for when I don't want to carry my i-pod, and the music player is a nice feature to have, but I definately don't want to fill my sd with anything other than games and an occasional movie. *2 cents*
