Im loving my gp2x.. all except for the long boot time, and often re-boot time i have to do. I cant STAND those lines on the screen, the nintendo DS has similar problem though, so im guessing that it cant be sorted with a tweak. I havent managed to sort if with a tweak!
The wavey lines bug me too.
I only got firmware 1.1.0 on there, mainly because everytime i installed one onto the gp2x, i soil myself. So really the less that i have to do an update, the better!
Im waiting for the new firmware, i have NO idea when it will be out though.

Im going to be getting a tv out cable next week! i need to update firmware for that, and i certainly hope that the NEW firmware will be out by then, maybe not though...
Im waiting for gp2x.co.uk to mail me back saying "yes you CAN pay via paypal!".

So far i only use the 2x for drmd, videos and thats about it really. I love outcast, but the sound is not very good, especially on rick dangerous!

My joystick is pretty cool, i used to get a problem but not now. If gamepark holdings make an official replacement stick, i will get one of those. Im not going to use my retro con or one of dave c's bird baths because i much prefer the way the official one looks. no offence btw!

Im a bit down about the fact that i cant seem to get most things to work. Drmd works great, although its exactly the same as gp32 version. heres hoping that reesy makes a gp2x special version for the coding competition!

Also, im very VERY much looking forward to great emulators. Namely from systems such as snes (with sound and smooth graphics etc etc) gameboy advance (will we ever get that?) and neo geo and cps2 arcade systems.

With neo geo, im not sure exactly how much can be emulated perfectly, even though no emulation is perfect, but there are some emulators out there which arent rubbish! So im hoping for a non rubbish emu for those things.
I like squidges snes thing, and all the effort people put in. But sometimes i just put my 2x back into its pouch and go "ok man, see you in the summer" and just wait for some definitive emulators to come out.

Take the PSX emu for example. I see thunderforce V pics! I think WOAH!!!!! i cant wait to try th---- oh, hang on. its only at less than 5fps with NO sound. Resident evil 2, 5fps no sound. I dont know why people would want to play resi with no sound... but anyway...

Seeing the gp2x since christmas, ive only become LESS fond of it. It seems like every new release that comes out, is either very small update, or nothing at all to do with something that i actually like. Im not moaning here btw. Im just looking for some positive thinking.
Since christmas ive actually contemplated SELLING my gp2x, because right now there isnt that much that i am using it for, and £200+ including cards etc is quite a lot to have just sitting round.
At the moment im playing my ds alot, with a supercard. so basically i got all the games i could want on one card. Phoenix wright... oh man what a game!!!
So, here i am, holding my DS thinking "hang on hang on... wasnt i all geared up for the 2x MORE than getting a ds?".
And of course, yes i was more excited to get a 2x more than a DS. But NOW it seems that i want to hang onto my ds more than the 2x!! scandal!!

Im a bit upset really that i only use it for drmd and videos. im really looking forward to metal slug (neo geo mvs or aes versions) and cps2 games (if ever possible) and also gameboy advance... the ds is not so good with gba games in my view.
Im also looking forward to sega arcade perfect games, like outrun etc etc. system 16 all the way. I love the megadrive, but there is something about the arcade originals dont you think? ;)

Well, im just in this depressive state really, i look up as much as i can about the 2x, but nothing has really excited me yet. Maybe im looking in the wrong places?

Maybe you guys can help me know what to look forward to, or something that you think i should DEFINATELY try out on the 2x which give you much enjoyment.

[ I'm STUPID spammer ]. Now.

Try reading the forums ... there's a bunch of stuff that runs full speed with sound.

christ man, its only been out a couple months or so and you expect it to have everything already? give it time

Im not EXPECTING everything to come out right NOW! Im simply saying that out of the SHEER volume of things that have come out, and there is a lot in just these "few months", drmd seems to be the only one i like so far. I was simply asking what was there to look forward to. As in, is anyone doing anything cool for the coding competition that we could expect?
Im just thinking, because i would only keep my 2x for another month or so, if nothing is out which makes me really want to keep it then i will just sell it and get a 2x in a year or so. I could have more fun with the cash right now than im having with my 2x.
Just some app ideas or things which YOU are looking forward to or apps which you use and gets lots of fun out of would of been nice, not a flame.

Let's see. First I will have to point out that it is barely four months old in terms of development and in that four months a lot has been developed.

SuidgeSnes is getting there along with his PCE emulator. A couple more months and chances are they will reach high status.

ScummVM talkie is now possible without slowdown.

Havent tried GnGeo2x yet so I cant comment on Metal Slug.

Fday?

Once the firmware source is released then firmware hacks/improvements are going to come in thick and fast by the looks of things.

GBAX competition.

The PSX emulator is making leaps and bounds considerin the mammoth task.

Have you tried the LCD Tweaker?

Lots of ports of games: Eg OpenTTD?

Franxis' Mame?

Everything being made for the coding competition is meant to be kept secret until Craig releases the lot (Feb 20, or thereabouts).

metal slug runs fullspeed already. check out gngeo2x. and metal slug 2 as well, almost.

Ha, if the coding compo ends at that day, add atleast a month to get the date the entries will be released. It will be like every compo - the judging is too time consuming, or the judges are too lazy :p

You've answered your own question. For me, even if the machine could only run DrMD I would still keep it. If you can't find anything else you think is worth playing right now, then honestly you should probably sell it.

woo hoo! Posotive replies! Thanks guys :)

I have the lcd tweaker, and im just very picky sometimes with the screen. I found that the videos play back a little too dark. Im not sure how to make it brighter unless its with the fpll or upll settings in the tweaker.

Im looking forward very much to scummvm! Especially if it has full sound, sam and max here i come!

I tried the metal slug on the neo geo cd, it didnt work for me... i only have a very very slow internet. so downloading for me is tedious at most. I downloaded metal slug for neo cd, and it took almost all day.
I simply dont have all that much time on the net to go scouting and downloading for things. If i see a new drmd, i go straight to it and it would be worth the wait, but it is frustrating to me to download something and its not much improvment.

I would love the psx emu to play silent hill, but i dont think that this is possible. My pc is amd x64 3700+ with 1512gb memory pc3200 and an ati radeon 9800xt 256mb graphics card, so n64 and psx and all that work amazing on my pc. Before the upgrade though with a 2ghz cpu my pc did have a hard time playing silent hill. So i dread to think what it would be like running only with 64mb and 200mhz!

Im very much looking happy to get a new version of squidge snes, because out of all the snes emus i have had, on gp32 and etc, its my fave so far! Its come along SOOO fast! Apart from being excited about that and etc whih i have said, i cant think of anything else which is going to be good.

Duke nukem i couldnt get to work, i have atomic adition, but it hasnt got the files which the port for 2x requires in instructions. oh well!

I phrased the competition questioning wrong, sorry (my english is not too good!) i meant to ask what you are hoping to maybe see out of the comptition? more emulators or more original games! Thanks again!

i already have psp and ds in my grasp :) The psp is not good for emulator in my view, so bad advice for me i think, also cards are expensive, so gp2x is much better for all the free stuff and runs it at better quality, or at least it COULD run it at higher quality.
PSP battery = NO GOOD! But i love wipeout pure. In all metal gear acid, luminies and wipeout pure are great enough for me to keep my psp.
The ds us just greater than the psp. The 2x is great, but im only using it for video and drmd. i also used my gp32 for exactly the same things. Im hoping for some grade A things, such as metal slug aes version and xmen vs streetfighter.

I will keep my 2x for drmd and video, but if there is no news or possibility of xmen vs sf and metal slug all at great speeds etc then i will probably sell the 2x, and get another next christmas.

I was lucky when i found the gp32, because it was a blu+ and DRMD had just got amazing for it. So i was having perfect unit right then.

I was exciting to get the gp2x because it was 4 times the gp32. I was not expecting perfectness as early as this, but the volume of apps that have come out for it so far, i was thinking a bit too hopefull maybe... im looking very much forward to scummvm! and i will try and get metal slug to work for me. If it doesnt say "heavy machine gun!!" though i wont try until it does say those things.

thanks again for the pointers! that wiki list is GREAT!

ScummVM already is already at full speed with speech. Check around the threads in Beta Testing I think.
Metal Slug on gngeo2x NOT NeoGeoCD. Big difference.
As for the competition, I have no idea, there hasn't been any rumours flying about yet. I wouldn't mind a NeoGeoPocket Emulator though..

yes but also pc cpus are powered by plug and have cooling, if my pc struggled then surely the gp2x with no cooling and low memory compared to my pc would struggle to get good too. Or even if it DID manage to get good, the life on battery wont be so good. Im happy with results for psx on gp2x so far, but i just dont think its going to be the defining app for the 2x.
I mean, i wouldnt show people the psx running on the 2x, especially to a psp person, because people would think that gp2x is not good at all.

Personally i think that, even though i have psp, that simple 3d games like mario kart and 2d games like sonic are the best kind of portable games. Even resident evil is! But games like that are not very much good for the portable, unless save states are perfect. Resident evil on DS is very good, but smal screen - not so good!
Resident evil if ever comes on psp would be ideal, but its the type of game you can play for more than 3 hours on long journey, and it would be shame for it to run out on you, especially with psp battery!

I dont think psx is going to be very good. Quake on gp32 was very good. but i dont think that psx is going to be as good as that. Quake also was enerally a small file compared to the 400+ mb psx games.

ooh yes! NEO GEO POCKET! i like the sound of that. it wasnt very good on the gp32.. im now looking forward to that! hurrah!

I'd agree i would be perfectly happy with it but the start up time is completely ridiculous my pc i feel boots just as quickly and definitely if it hangs on boot and i have to turn it off and on. 5 seconds i'd be ok with its hard to go from the gp32 which was instant to the gp2x. So for me until this boot time is sorted i still wish i had the gp32 or a ds or a psp....

I said it would be nice, I didn't say there was going to be a version for sure.
Like it was said previously, you cant compare a PC version of an emu against another version. Why? Because there is still room to optimise everything to hell and back.

Examples: Snes on the GBA? Takes advantage of the hardware to produce something that is playable. Corn on the PC was a N64 emulator that run really well on a P300 because it was mostly done in assembly

yes yes! that is exactly what i mean! i am happy that there is someone else who also thinks like this, and that uber positive people can cheer us up!

Im happy that scummvm is coming out though, i NEARLY completed day of the tentacle! But after playing it on pc, i would rather complete and see the end with sound now. I would play on pc, but when you have half life 2, quake 4, battlefield 2 and doom 3 on pc its hard to open up dott and complete.
Also i very much enjoy playing 2d games on the go.
Am am very upset about boot time though, the gp32 was much more of a friendly portable unit so far. If an emu had a bad rom, i would just turn it off and start over within 5 seconds.
With the 2x though, i have to turn off, reboot... if it works first time that is, wait about 30 seconds. then go to lcd tweak and adjust cpu etc. then boot drmd. When i got to try out rom number 23 (etc) of 1000+ and if that works, i go to test another. Sometimes roms make the emu hang, and have to go back to the beginning all over again.
I dont bother with squidge snes now, because if rom gets old, or dont work properly i have to start all all again!!! AAH!!
