I got my 2x with 1.1 on it, and never updated, but I've always found the screen to be too bright as you described. Was this the case on firmwares earlier than 1.1? Wasn't one of 1.3's promised features a brightness/contrast control?
I'm using fw 1.0.0 and screen is perfect for me, but I like it to be very bright, so it may be me.

It isn't going to be released due to GPL threats, 1.4.x is now being completed. Its likely there will be a 1.5 release with source code soon.

Hopefully they will fix the gamma in the new release. The 1.2 is way too bright washing out the blacks and "over exposing" the color.

It needs to be turned down a notch.

yes i have the same problem here, the colours are so washed out.

would be interesting to get a list of things they are planning on adding/fixing/breaking in 1.4-1.5, does this mean they will be releasing 1.4, or going past 1.4 and doing 1.5+source?

Yes ! We win ! We are so smart ! Thanks to the GPL police ! Thanks to the GPL police we ... hu ... we are losing firmware 1.3 and 1.4. F***ing dumb ass :( But at least all these dick heads have what they deserve now.
btw cannot GPH pm firmware 1.3 (without the source of course) to any people that said fine things about them instead of threatening them in these forums ? :p

edit : what is really sad is that i'm pretty sure that most people that complain over and over about this GPL stuff and that wanted the source NOW are NOT gp2x owners :(
I am one of the people who complain over and over about this GPL stuff and I am a GP2X owner. As for your first paragraph, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever because GPH and DignSys and craigix and anyone else who is distributing the GP2X is in violation of the GPL. This hasn't changed at all in the time that the GP2X has been on sale. If GPH think that they can't now distribute a new firmware without the source, that is fine but it doesn't change the fact that they shouldn't still be distributing the GP2X without the source, no matter what version of the firmware it has in it. I'm sorry to keep banging on about this, but I think it is important and I don't think the point is well understood.

So, of course, you are not using your gp2x and will not use it till this issue is resolved, as, technically speaking, your gp2x is in violation of the GPL right now ...
And, of course, you don't use and never have downloaded any rom, as you're so honest and picky about this kind of thing !

This post should be locked right now, this has been done to death, buried in soft peat and recycled as firelighters (which are now being used to start a new burning pyre). Just wait and see what happens. It's now holidays season in korea I believe for the next week, so have some patience. As for some of the people who seem to already be hounding Craig, don't shoot the fucking messenger.

Allan.

The fact is Dignsys probably integrated code they didn't want or can't make public into the program. They need to put the code in a form where it is used as an external dll type file which will require them to restructure their code which is extensive work.

They could've released the code, just with the protected parts not included but no doubt seeing the militancy of the GPL threads they thought that would make things worse and as such canned the release of said firmware.

To some it up : the flaming they've got has made them ultra protective and to scared to do things that would otherwise be considered goodwill because they're more now worried about the GPL then releasing stop gap solutions to help the users and coders

I am not in violation of the GPL, so I'm not obliged to not use my GP2X. As for the ROMs, no I don't have any ROMs. I don't have any pirated software at home or at work at all. I have never downloaded a film. All the mp3s and oggs I have have been ripped from my own collection of CDs.

basically, we've been round and round the arguments for/against GPL and why it exists, and all the misunderstandings don't EVER get resolved. nobody changes their mind, or accepts anyone else's point of view. it's a waste of time.

No real rant from me this time. GPH is obviously taking the GPL violation seriously since they seem committed to not making another firmware release until they come into compliance. This obviously hurts them as a company as holding up the firmware keeps bugs from being fixed, and thus makes the product look bad and not sell as well. This should provide them with the motivation to come into compliance, and thus as long as they don’t release new firmware without source, I am content to give them the time they need to come into compliance.

Everybody relax.

I don’t know why people think threads about this should be locked; it’s a perfectly valid concern for all GP2X owners. Surely there are better threads to be aggressively moderating.

Isn't that the case with 45% of the conversations on Internet? I'm guessing another 45% is spent on mindless group think, leaving 10% for intellectually stimulating debate...

@shrubberyrobbery : this thread is not about arguments for/against GPL and why it exists, and nobody talked about that, so please just shut up. You were just trying to look nice but you just looked dumb.

@evening2005 : if you don't have any roms, I wonder what you're doing with your gp2x ;) Unless you bought it only to only play or develop some homebrew games ? (some of them are very good of course, but I don't think this is really the gp2x main advantage :p )

i just wanted to be the 33rd person to reply to this reviting thread. Big up Brixton massive!

He said 'soon'........ yeh right....

'Soon' means nothing in the gph sense, any more accurate idea craigix?

I also look forward to seeing the bugs introduced in 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 all at the same time! Three times the bugs should make for some seriously f'ed up firmware :p

I too would like to argue for no thread locking. Joining #gp2xdev, idling for a day, then filtering the irc logs is a horrible way to get news, and one place to check periodically for updates would be much more convenient.

If you don't like a post, don't respond to it. I have faith that the mods have discretion enough to remove truly inflammatory posts without killing the thread. Fear of controversy should be no barrier to discussion.

lectern: you have DrMD working in that shot? i thought it wasnt possible?

My Dream that 1 day it will work. It stops working when you choose a rom. Ahhh so close.........yet so far.

Apologies to all who thought that this was about the release of the new FW, I thoughht the subtitle of the thread would have made it clear, but have just realised I didn't put a question mark.

Thanks to craig for the update.

I'm holding off on getting a GP2x at the moment until the new firmware comes out and the emulators for some systems are a bit more developed. )I want to make sure it's going to suit me better than the PSP, and I'll only be convinced about that if some of the bugs are ironed out.)

YEAH! I love the 2x, but im having much less fun with it than with the gp32. I remember the gp32... i shouldnt of sold it now :( I remember when you could just turn on the console and there! THERE! its booted! ven though the boot up DID sound like an apple mac... at least it booted first time!

Another thing is this...how can the gp2x screen be worse than the gp32s? the gp32 screen was AWESOME!! the 2x screen is jiggly, liney and just plain not good as the gp2x.
If its all to do with the firmware.. i dont know why firmwares are so slow with updating, i mean, the gp32 wasnt THIS bad on first release was it?! Im just finding it rather annoying at the moment. I try squidgesnes, no sound and i cant go back after i load a rom. Now, its not all bad, but i mean, when it takes like a minute to boot... no fair!
