My GP2x won't be sent until the firmware is released and they are able to update it (at my request, I know.. Starting to regret it). Does anyone have any constructive advice for how to waste the time until the new firmware comes out (like biting my toenails or underwater basket weaving)?

Does anyone actually know exactly when the new firmware will be released?

you could try that stunny move of spock on yourself, if it works it should make the time go by quick!
you have to hit the carotid artery afik.
http://www.stuecke.net/man.jpg you have to hit the 6. best way is to grab your larynx and than slowly move the thumb upwarts, when you feel the pulse you have found it, press now and you are send away in the land of dreams.

On Thursday, the twenty-second of December, in the year 2006, at precisely 0800 Greenwich Mean Time the new firmware will be released to the public.

That neck pinch idea was no good. Only put me out for 20 minutes, and gave me one hell of a headache.

You could do what I'm doing... since I made the same mistake.

Get all your roms ready for the massive retro-gamegasm that is the GP2X

I don't know if I can place my faith in the emulation aspect of the system. After following the forum here for a few days it seems that most of my favorite systems won't be fully functional with the gp2x (namely SNES / GBA / NeoGeo / MAME).

But thats not the main reason I got the system, I was hoping to be able to do some programming of my own on the system. Its been a few years since I have done any coding (I do have a BS in Comp Sci though) but im hoping I won't find it too difficult to jump into GP2x development.

Ideally I would like to make an e-book reader that supports more formats / options and possibly integrates audio capabilities.

Eh, SNES seems to be coming along nicely. PSX is showing promise, too. I honestly have to admit, I've never seen the point in emulating a GBA on a portable system.

with the exception of MAME... ALL of those sytems could be emulated perfectly... provided someone works on 'em...

Odd, i didn't get that idea at all, i got the idea that most of those would be done fairly quickly and work pretty fast, heck some of those are being worked on already, the things only been out for like a month...

Specifically while reading these forums I remember seeing that the GBA would be difficult if not impossible at full speed because of the custom hardware (although, as I still have my gba its not that big of a deal for me). The issue with MAME and NeoGeo emus seems to be the limited ram as it would be pretty hard to get an emulation running at or near full speed while having to swap large portions of the game to and from the SD card. As far as SNES is concerned it seems that a from scratch re-write might be necessary as the pc-centric code just doesn't take advantage of the GP2x's hardware enough to work full speed.

In the end, they all might be possible, but may just require so much work that we never see it come to pass. And I know many are already partially emulated, but for me a game running at 3/4 speed, or with half the frames skipped isn't truely playable.

I guess Ideally I would like to see some original content for the GP2X so that some day in the future we will have discussions about whether or not our Gamepark devices can be emulated on the newest sony/microsoft/nintendo handheld.

And MAME is a bit of a tricky cooky as well, concidering its more a set of emulators compared to an emulator in a way, mame to a certain point could be ported, or a simular emulator for whatever arcade archatectures could be written, but not much of the newer stuff could work...

but, im not a good programmer, nor have i looked at mames source.
