Devs.. Moving To Gp2x Or Sticking With Gp32?

Do you intend on devving for GP2X _instead of_ GP32?

This is an ugly question, but someone has to ask it.. as I bet its been on a lot of peoples minds :)

Course, no one has a GP2X yet, so it might be the wrong time to ask.

(Also, it counts out Fenix people right now, since we don't know if Fenix works on GP2X yet, though I expect it'll be an easy port.)

So if you're doing C/C++ development, answer us this..

Will you keep devving for GP32, or are you moving right over to GP2X instead?

Since I`m only dev`ing in Fenix, I think there will be GP32 and GP2X versions (if needed) of my future games (IF Fenix gets ported to the gp2x).

It depends on the devkit and how much twiddling needs to be done to get stuff to run on both. (hopefully, just a fresh set of libs&includes to port 32 stuff over ;) )

For now - I'm waiting to see how the 2x is, but I'll probably get one sooner or later and then I'll do stuff for that.

Remember it's supposed to be a poll for devs ONLY! ;)

Skeezix - mind telling which way you voted? :)

Ok I voted even though I never really developed anything for the GP32.

But I am seriously thinking about doing some 3d work for the gp2x (since I am a skilled 3D modeler), like a Quake based game, but it is just a idea so far.

But the GP32 is just to weak for this, so it's gp2x only for me.

*g* Prophet -- I put gp2x and then later gp32 again. ie: I'm already spread too thin, so it woudl be wrong to say Id' do both gp32 and gp2x at sme time up front (misleading); however, code I write is always cross platform.. so some new game homebrew ideas and ports and suchI do will be for both gp32 and gp2x I imagine.. but gp2x up front, with gp32 rebuidls later as time permits I think.

Got a few things in mind for gp2x already, but I wont' mention them .. if I do, Squidge will just do a "./configure; make" and be done 30 s later ;)

:D

Tell me, tell me, I'm running out of things to port ;)

I'm going to be running UAE on both GP32 & GP2X, simply because I want to see how much faster the GP2X actually is when faced with the same stuff.

I'll certainly port to GP2X as soon as I buy one. I imagine adding support for it will be trivial, not that my own project is that widely used.

sixxie, you know damn right some of us use your emu ;)

I'm gonna try and port stuff I have worked on but I want to continue trying away at getting them done on GP32 also so maybe I'll be unable to do neither but atleast I'm gonna try.

Do you think you will be able to make use of the second CPU with UAE? I think that would be the only way to get anything that is playable and with sound. The second CPU could be used to emulate the graphics and sound chips while the main one will do the CPU (cyclone?).

Lynx? Maybe you could port Tusken raider's Lynx emu (forget PC Handy, too slow). It is already near perfect on the GP32 at 166 MHz. I would bet it could be perfect on the GP2X. If only he could be contacted for the source. I asked him for it but got the ever too common "no reply" that many devs seem to give ;) Maybe I am not l337 enough :(

I'm planning to move to the GP2X, then my GP32 will sit next to my GBA and gather dust. Come on people, live in the now. Let the past go! :)

Not that I or any non-dev really have any say in the matter but I dont see why a "choice" has to be made unless necessary, it dosent have to be one or the other unless you've run out of things to do. I mean once you get down to working on what ever project you want to start, it should be obvious whether or not you need the amout of power the '2X offers or if it can be done on the '32. Fenix games already run just fine on GP32, so unless there's some new powerful version of Fenix or your game simply starts pushing unheard of limits, you can still dev for it. If Fenix gets ported to the 2X then your game automatically gets a new platform as well unless the port of fenix is signifigantly different.

I mean unless this is specifically about Emulators, In which case as long as people have GP32's they'll still be more than greatful for any work and upgrading done on the stuff they have.

well.. upsetting to read this in a way, exciting in another..
i am happy to have GP32 and not looking to upgrade (not impossible, of course, but it would be nice, someday!! So I guess inevitable.. eventually)

i think if recent GP32 adopters read this thread it'll get them kind of down, esp. since they JUST got their machine recently "oh great I just bought it, and it's obsolete already?" But this isn't the case. The GP32 scene has thrived, and the reasons that many people have bought it for are still great reasons to keep it now, and in the future. Sure the Holy Grail may never be reached ("perfect snes emulation") but who the heck knows, right? (hey, there's still some work being put into it... at the very least, any advancement is great!)

i can't fault devver's for wanting to get involved with new hardware. what drew them to GP32 in the first place, after all? I say, go and conquer the new territory, if you are excited about it, and your community of course will support you. Sure some people will whine "port for us, port for us!" and hey, maybe we will get some hand-me-down's if it's not too impolite, who knows.

myself, I just hope to see MAME continuing to be worked on, at the very least.. better SNES'd be nice.. and as usual, "if it all stops tomorrow, I've still got plenty to keep me entertained" - that's why I bought a GP32 in the first place.

Heh, oh sure, and I'm very grateful for your support and enthusiasm! It's just that I'm under no illusions about its limited appeal. I wasn't trying to fish, honest ;)

I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do with the gp2x and it will be really nice to have a backlit screen for once, but to be honest apart from ports, the original stuff I work on is usually so simple that the power of the gp32 is more than enough. My plan is to start developing everything in SDL, then I can release crappy little games for both platforms at the same time. I'll only leave the gp32 if/when it stops being fun, and at the minute it's more fun than ever.

sixxie: Another vote here for a gp2x xroar port! It's the only emu I use on a regular basis. I never could understand why people need more than 4 colours :).
