To wholly understand the problem, check this out:
www.stopie.com
Now,to compair FireFox and Opera, the difference is that the Fox is fully free and opensource, means that many people work on it,so it evolves much faster, and that considering security,it can get fixed much faster.
To stop these suckin' microsoft programs,I recommend you that:
www.winlibre.com
Here you can find a software set that includes:
-FireFox
-ThunderBird(which is to outlook what Firefox is to ie)
-VLC media player(amazing, can even read edonkey temps. And it works independently:without any codec)
-Openoffice.org
-notepad2
-And much more
You can choose which ones you install and which ones you dont.

I personally have nothing against IE as long as you have service pack 2 installed. It has a pretty good popup blocker etc built in. And don't let anyone tell you that Opera etc doesn't have popups, as a coder myself, I can tell you it's pretty easy to write a popup into a page that will popup in almost anything. And when they find a way to block that, coders will find a way round it. It's the way of the world!!!
As a web designer how can you support IE which breaks standards and makes the lives of web developers like myself a living misery? Two of us coders had to stay up way into the early hours on a seven hour stretch to fix bugs IE randomly decided to introduce as soon as we added a new feature to the page. It seems if you want to spend less time developing, you need to code for IE, and that's a real shame.

As for pop-ups... nope, pretty much any HTML method is blocked by Firefox or Opera. However, Firefox etc. have no control over pop-ups spawned from a Flash plugin for example. All you can do it say 'I don't want ANY pop-ups from Flash', not 'I don't want pop-ups from Flash that I didn't trigger by clicking on a link'. So I hope that gets sorted soon; luckily there's a new plugin system coming to Mozilla that should fix this.

use anything but IE :) i use FF and I am very happy with it. there are a few sites incompatible with firefox for whatever reason but this can easily be fixed with an 'Open In IE' extension for FF that opens the current page on FF into IE. Loads of many other great extensions and themes etc if you like playing around with stuff.
I'm lovin' your avatar.

Firefox is the better browser for sure. Tabbed browsing and RSS bookmarks (inc this site!) are fantastic features I use all the time. But Microsoft know they're losing credibility, so they'll be back with an improved version of IE no doubt.

No they won't. They'll be back with even less standards compliance than they have now, and they'll pay web developers to use the new features to force people to use there browser as they know thats the only reason why people use IE now.

I prefer Opera above firefox and I have my reasons for doing so but that doesn't take away that Firefox is still a really good browser. I just don't like it that I have to download a dozen plugins to get the functions that I can get in 1 download with Opera. I'm sure that firefox has some damm impresive plugins but that doesn't take away my lazines :p

That's easy to say, but look at the new MSN search. Microsoft aren't so arrogant they won't listen to their own customers.

The point of FF is you get a the bare minimum browser, and you add what you want. If you are used to all of them other features though FF probably isn't for you.

In opera with 'Stop ALL popups' selected i've never had a popup since I enabled it, if there is a page which can defeat it i'd like to try it out, url anyone?

What I love about opera is the speed, we have an ancient P166 here at GBAX which is a scsi based CD printing machine with 8 CD-R drives, it runs Win98 and on it, while printing CD's, you can listen to MP3's and browse the net via opera.

No other browser is fast enough to do that, if you try FF or IE the MP3 playback breaks up really badly and the CD's sometimes miswrite (and losing 8 CDR's at once is very very annoying).

That opera is pretty quick and kind to antique CPUs!

Opera user here (registered legally), Although firefox is good, I just can not get used to it. I use the hold right, Click left to got back and the hold left, Click right to got forwards which i am so used to. Granted, Firefox does have this feature, But it is not as responsive as it is in Opera and you can not go forwards or backwards more than one page in succession with out taking your fingers off the mouse. I also don`t get the fact that Firefox supports tabbed browsing, But still opens certain pages in a seperate window  .

Even with all the extras in Opera, Such as email, standard extensions, Download manager, Chat, Pop-up blocker, Auto session saving etc. The download file is just over 3mb in size (tight).

Personally, I'd use IE if it wasn't so abused by 'the bad people'. It's faster than Firefox - I'm sure it is.

By far I prefer Firefox to IE. In my opinion it is loads better, it's faster and I only occaisionally get pop-ups (but I do need to check for spyware). :)

Yeah, the only think I prefer with IE is that it boots the program very quickly. I use a p2 350 and it takes a good few seconds to load. The good thing is though that once it's loaded, I don't need it to load again with the tabs.

Yes, FF is better than IE.

I use FF becuase I kept getting spyware, hijacks, and general shitware from IE.

I like to imagine that I'm riding on a huge red reptile-like creature (Mozilla) as opposed to a stupid spinny blue lowercase e thingy. ^_^ (What can I say, I like dragons a lot. :p)

I'm a little outdated though, since I use Firebird. Funny story about that... Firefox came out the day after I downloaded Firebird. Imagine that. :p The popup blocker is definately a main reason I use it. That and the adblock extension. "Tired of seeing these ads?" me: "What ads? :D" Besides, some of those ads still can give me shitware, but the solution to that is adblock: it completely removes the ads, does not render them, it's as though they're not even there. :D (As opposed to just hiding the ads from view)

IE does none of that, so blah. :p
