A Nice Thread All About The Psp

I'm sure you all now but I'd just like to say how well the PSP emualtion scene is moving on.

I'd say GBC is pretty much nearing perfect now. It's full speed with sound and great compatibilty.

Nes is near enough full speed in lots of games and although sound is dirty, it is progressing.

I havent' played the Neo Geo Pocket yet.

Snes is slow but based on the other emus progress speeds...things could get interesting soon.

PC-Engine is also fantastic. Speed is perfect, as is sound...although I do get slowdown at a few point in certain games.

What a great age we live in....I dread the day I have to make a decision as to whether I should keep all this emulation and homebrew or be forced to upgrade firmware to play a new PSP game...decisions.

Just found out about NGPC emulation today... have to give that one a try...

There's already a PC Engine emu out for PSP??? Why haven't I seen this?????

This is REALLY fantastic that it's moving SO fast... I KNEW the PSP was gonna be great once it was cracked! Throw in perfect Neo Geo emulation and I can get rid of my Xbox :D

EDIT: Holy crap! Found it! Oh man I can't wait to try this one... perfect speed and sound?!?!?!? for a v 0.1 release??? Oh man...

the pc engine? yeah, supposedly good speed and sound, and now it's at version 0.3!
i wonder if they have full screen support though.

also, neogeo emulation is in the works(rumor), but i wonder how they'll overcome memory limitations..(xbox has virtual memory management on the neogeo emulators)

yup, don't have 1.0 firmware, but played around with the psp elf interpreter(psp emulator). checked out snes9x for psp, and it plays pretty good for a first release. emulation is spot on(playing megaman x), but needs a major speed boost, sound support, and various little features, and i hope it gets it sometime down the road.
all in all, looking very good, and i hope the author/porter is having fun and continues.

ho...ly....sh*t....

Just tried the PCE Emu... fuggin AMAZING! It's right up there with GP Engine... seems full speed, sound seems perfect or very close to it, it's running frameskip of 2 though but looks GREAT... tried a bunch of games like Bonk, Bomberman, Son Son II, R-Type... all working fantastic. No full screen support yet that I can see... there are some options in the menu that I dont know what they do that I didn't want to mess with, like the base clock option (??? is it as I predicted earlier? App-controlled overclocking?).

I'm amazed... this is the best emu so far, looking, sounding and running better than all the others as far as I can tell... is PCE just that easy to emulate/port? The new GB emu with sound is near perfect as well but desperately needs Vsync to combat screen tearing.

NES and SNES are still slow.... now where's the MD emulation!!!!

That settles it I'm buying another PSP next month so I don't have to update this one... this scene is just moving too fast and I dont want to miss out when I have to update to play some game and sit around forever hoping they find some crack for v 1.5 and up.

yeah, and i may have to track down a 1.0 psp :(
MD emulation is rumored to be in the works, by the same guy that ported the PCE emulator(kamisama(?))!!

btw, i tried out the new wipeout pure track, it's sooo nice. got me to thinking if somehwere down the road there'll be some kind of track editor, or where you can design your own track! it would be SO cool, too bad mods so far are only a thing for pc FPS games :(

They've already released a SECOND expansion for Wipeout but so far it's only available for the Japanese version of the game, I'm sure the US version will be available very soon. yeah I love that extra track and the new ship is pretty good too.

If the MD emu is done by the same guy who did the PCE emu than I can only expect good things :D that emu is really amazing... sux I still have to leave my 1.0 PSP with my wife for now until we get another one :( hopefully by that time things will have advanced even more... gonna be sweeeeeet!

<ARSE> <ARSE> <ARSE> c'mon crack the 1.5.. pretty please... <GROAN>

On another note, I've tried a couple of Screen Protectos - one was SHIT (Cyber PSP Screen Film Kit) the protector was already scratched before I put it on (I got it from Success-HK) - its only got one side to peel off (the sticky side) the other side is meant to be clear....

The other one I tried is the Dog's Nuts... Hori Screen Protector - got it off E-bay from importsolutions (I think) - £4.99... Only thing was the install instructions are in Japanese, and there seems to be two versions out there - one with red and a blue tabbed sheets (pull of blue tab put that side of protector face down, pull off red tab - viola!)... One with a Red Tab and a clear tab - Pull off RED Tabbed sheet - place that side down on PSP, remove Clear tab...

The side which goes face down is slightly rubbery - but when applied you get a VERY clear image - possibly even better than without...

I had the same problem; it looks like there is only one side to peel off, but there are two. Took me a few days to figure it out, but there are.

Perhaps yours only does have one, but it's worth looking at it.

I've tried a japanese screen protector and it was great except for the fact that I had an immensely hard time getting the thing on w/o any dust trapped underneath it which results in very annoying bubbles... so I just took it back off.

Another problem is they are as difficult to keep clean as the PSP itself, but when you clean them they are also very easy to scratch, whereas I clean the PSP's own screen quite often and haven't scratched it yet.

Sweet.

0.3 out already you say.

I only got 0.2 the other day, any mention of screen stretching yet?

I cant believe Sony are closing these holes, it's a crying shame, but hopefully all firmwares will be cracked soon.

By the way, I read about some people potentially releasing harmful code that can wipe your firmware via software/homebrew. So just be careful where you get stuff from.

Is everything fully tested a verified before going up on the PSParchive?

Nope - only the one side on My Cybver PSP ones (and I got three of them!!!)

Bast525 - did you get the Hori one (japanese instructions)? If you put it on the wrong way up you can never get rid of all the bubbles - and just get dust trapped, I got two of these ones - found out the hard way!!! If you clean the correct side of the Hori ones with e.g. a Spectacles cloth - I have found it seems to be fine (I now have a Logitech case too which is the ultimate protection!!! and means my GP32 gets its case back...)

Argon0 - I dont remember what brand it was but yeah the instructions were in Japanese. They did have a protective cover on BOTH sides that had to be peeled off. I knew from my experience with a similar product for the DS that only one side was the correct side for placing onto the PSP screen... as mentioned above it was actually quite easy to tell by the texture of it... I lifted a tiny corner of the protective film and just rubbed it a little, one side was silky smooth, the other felt rubbery and grippy. Dust off the PSP screen, peel the cover off that side first and placed it onto the PSP screen using little card that was included to push it down flat. But ALWAYS some spec of dust got in there and caused some bubbles. GRRRRRRRRR.

And yeah I have a very soft silk cloth that I use for my eyeglasses and that's the ONLY thing I use to clean any of my handheld systems' screens, but that PSP screen cover still got pretty scratched up in a short period of time.

To all - I was reading this article last night, about how the PSP is currently 'locked' at 222mhz and all that... like many people here I had always looked at that very negatively, but this article I read put it in a very positive light. It pointed out that... yeah the mhz are locked at 222 to save battery life, but without doubt, time will come that Sony will develop a battery with much higher capacity, and will then 'UNlock' the CPU and FSB speed. So point #1 is that... right now yeah the PSP is running only at 2/3 power... ONLY! And already games are looking amazing. So for the first time it occurs to me... imagine how good these things are going to look when they raise up the processor speed!

Aother point the article made, was that, by capping the processor speed right off the bat like that, Sony have forced developers to work at making their code more efficient right from the start, to maximize performance at THAT level... as opposed to having ALL the power right away and having lots of unoptimized code (the article called it 'sloppy code') not taking full advantage of the system. So when the speed cap does get raise, by then developers should have a fair bit of experience wringing the most out of 222mhz, and should REALLY be able to work wonders with the extra 111mhz and just make amazing games for the thing.

I had same issues with my first Hori - (cos I put it on wrong way round) 2nd one I used I cleaned it with the cloth that came with it, then turned the PSP upside down and put the protector on.....

Nah, actually I didn't, just was really careful but quick - but I have heard of people doing it that way to avoid dust landing on PSP while putting protector on... :D

As for the Mhz locking - I always looked on it as a good thing - with the extra (software controllable) MHz you could get some REALLY Kick A$$ emulators...

homebrew devvers should be able to access the PSP's full 333mhz... as I had mentioned in some other thread, it's not actually 'locked', but rather, the devkits sony have provided are locked to 222mhz for now. I dont know what home devvers are using but I'm assuming whatever they are using to dev is not locked to 222mhz like Sony devkits are.

AFAIK they use the kit from ps2dev, which is not the official one from Sony (Sony would have closed down the whole scene otherwise, I'm sure!)

and there is an option in v0.3 of the PCE emu on PSP, it just says "Base Clock" and then I think it says 000005 (not sure the numbers though).

Anyone know what this is? I'm thinking it's an option to change the clockspeed of the PSP....

With what EvilDragon has just said I'm 99% sure that home devvers WILL be able to set the clockspeed or allow it to be user settable.

The real question for me is, will they be able to run it even HIGHER than 333mhz???
