3d Stereo Glasses

BaD... I got my Elsa 3D Glasses off Ebay.co.uk for about £12 NEW

they kick ass :)

I use Elsa 3D Glasses together with a HP 3D SpaceMouse to do 3D Stuff with 3dmax.

The way they work is simple:
The monitor displays the image for the left eye, then the image for the right eye, etc.
The glasses open and shut each eye so that the correct picture gets into the right eye.

You lose half of the monitor refresh rate, of course. So if you have a 60Hz monitor, it flickers a lot.
Be sure to use a good monitor and graphics card. Mine does 1600*1200 with 120Hz (which means, using the glasses I still get a nice refresh rate of 60Hz).

The good thing is that the drivers hooks itself into DirectX, so every Direct3D game can be played in 3D :)

I once played with it Black & White, which looks absolutely amazing.

I am getting VERY tempted to get a pair now. Cheers for the ebay info Steve-O. Can't find any under £20 notes at the moment though.

I've researched this a bit and they say you need a minimum of 70Hz to reduce flicker. My monitor goes to 85Hz so should be passable if not particulary brilliant.

Has anyone tried a 3D space game or a flight sim on a pair of these?

Hmm... that makes a refresh rate at about 42... you won't be able to play that long before getting a headache. A minimum rate for 3D should be about 100Hz.

Are you sure your monitor can't handle this?
Most monitors can handle more if you set the resolution lower, which doesn't matter too much when playing 3D games.

Nice one. I can refresh at 100 Hz when I drop the res to 800 x 600 :) Thanks for that ED.

ED, I have a refresh rate of 85hz and Its fine for me :)... I can play for hours and get no headaches etc :)

Well... I read this thread and decided to go for a pair....

I bought a pair of the wireless E-Dimensional glasses off ebay - bit more pricey, but wireless is good :)

They've got great reviews, and I'm looking forward to having a play...

I wasn't bidding against anyone here was I?

Not me.I'll probably get some wired ones. I don't want to piss my Girlfriend off too much. I've just spent £20 on a Joystick and I'm about to spend £40 on games :)

Axeman, How much does a New battery cost for them when it goes flat ?

Has anyone who has got one got an ATI graphics card? And if so, does it work with it?
Do they work with any game, or only specific ones?

I'm new to these but I've done a lot of research in the last day or two. ATI seem to cause a lot more trouble than Nvidia. The forum mentioned on Toxibunny's post is probably the best place to ask but it looks like mosch hasn't had a reply to his ATI question yet.

As a rule 3D glasses only work on CRT monitors but there seems to be some new ones just out that work with TFTs. You'll need to research that as I have a CRT and can't remember where I saw the info.

AFAIK the glasses work on any 3D game although some will give better results than others.

This is a good review of the ED ones.

Edit: Here's another review of the ED ones. Mentions being compatible with thie lot:

3dfx Banshee, 3dfx Voodoo2, 3dfx Vodoo3, 3dfx Vodoo5, ATI Radeon, ATI Rage128 & 128GL, ATI Rage 128 Pro, Intel i740, Intel i752, Intel i810, Matrox Millennium G200 & G400, NVIDIA GeForce 256, NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS, NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, NVIDIA TNT & TNT Vanta, NVIDIA TNT2, TNT2 Ultra, & TNT2 M64, S3 Savage 2000, S3 Savage3D, S3 Savage 4

It's obviously an older review but at least ATi cards are mentioned.

You can also use this, if you want to spend a bit more money ;)

or (one of the best ones, but a bit pricey ;))

i saw these a while back... actually i'm quite surprised that someone hasn't started making lenticular arrays to convert your existing flatscreen monitor into one of these.... (you ever seen those plastic cards you sometimes get free with cereal where if you tilt the pic you get a different image? well that's a lenticular array, only in this case you'd use it to deliver a different image to each eye...)

produced in bulk they could be cheap as chips... $15 off ebay... course, you've got to keep your head in the right position...

and looking a bit further ahead, read this!

The first link I supplied is such a kit :)
It's just not THAT cheap yet (about 269 Pounds).
But it's a kit :)

And it will become cheaper over eBay in a few months, I guess :)

There is some impressive technology being produced. I found a link to this site when I was researching 3d glasses yesterday. The subject matter is a bit iffy as it's used for medical displays at the moment but the result it amazing, especially the DNA pic I've linked to.

Edit: What with these display advances, home cinema surround sound, rfids, oleds and every other new technology it really is starting to become a bit sci fi in real life :)

Home robots will be cheap as chips next. You can already get robot vacum cleaners and lawn mowers.

I can't wait until you can get an R2 unit for a couple of hundred quid.

Yup, Things are cool now.. Have you seen them new scanners / XRay things in hospitals (I think they are made by Philips).. you can have a part of your body scanend and it makes a 3D image of your insides

And I never will :D I have asked in many forums already, nobody seems to be able to answer this question.

Makes me glad I haven't ditched my FX5200 for a new ATI which was going to be a very real possibility in the next couple of months. Besides the 5200 is fine for most stuff. It's only really Doom 3 that struggles a bit. I'm hoping these glasses wil breathe life into my old games and therefore save me money :)
