I'm new to these but I've done a lot of research in the last day or two. ATI seem to cause a lot more trouble than Nvidia. The forum mentioned on Toxibunny's post is probably the best place to ask but it looks like mosch hasn't had a reply to his ATI question yet.
As a rule 3D glasses only work on CRT monitors but there seems to be some new ones just out that work with TFTs. You'll need to research that as I have a CRT and can't remember where I saw the info.
AFAIK the glasses work on any 3D game although some will give better results than others.
