Im in the uk and ive been checking out the x-box emulation scene and it looks pretty good. Dont understand all hte lingo though. Dashboard? is that just the start up menu? Also, If i want to boot from the HDD i need to chip my xbox right? And what sort of HDD do i need (e.g. physical size, speed). Anyone know anywhere in the UK that fits x-box chips? Also, the thomson DVD standard drive doesnt read cdrs/dvdrs does it? where cna i get a new one? Any help will be gratefully received.
cheers

The dashboard is the menu, you do need it chipped, there is another method but it isn't worth it. Any IDE HDD should work. Check up on the cd drives here. Thats the best site for modding information. If you get an xecuter 2.3+ lite which is non-solder you should be able to fit it yourself no problem but there are plenty of sites that sell and fit them. I myself purchased my chip from here and they were very good.

Also, I rarely use cdrs/dvdrs even though I have the best cd drive, the best thing to do is hook up your xbox to the pc with an ethernet cable and ftp files between them.

I bought my xbox back in november and that night I came home and started hacking it right away. I used exploits on mine insted of using a modchip becuase I am cheap and my soldering skills arn't all that great. I would say that it is deffinatly worth looking into the exploits and concider it. My xbox boots right into avalaunch which is an alternative operating system (dashboard) which replaces the normal green menu thing that comes on the system and I did this with out having to buy any new hardware or a chip or soldering anything.

1. Basicly you need to cut the cable of an xbox game pad
2.connect a standard usb cable to the end of it
3. plug that into your computer
4. install the pc drivers
5. copy a hacked game save to a memory card
6. copy that hacked game save to your xbox harddrive
7. launch the game save with mech assault or 007
8. run the installer
9. reboot the xbox and your xbox is modded

You don't even need to open the xbox in order to get this hack to work. The only thing is that you need to make sure that whatever hack you are going to use will work with the version of the xbox that you have.
It seems that the most recent xbox's have better dvd drives than the old ones did. My xbox can read any cd with no problem although I only use it for playing dvd, divix, vcd movies. Everything else I keep on my harddrive.
Installing a new harddrive is a bit more tricky with the exploits than it is if you where to install a modchip but it is possible and the challenge of it is sort of what makes it fun. I just like the idea of being able to hack an xbox and be able to get all of the functionality of an xbox with a mod chip with out the need of the extra chip.

As mentioned earlier take a look at xbox-scene.com that is the ultimate xbox hacking site and will give you everything that you need to get started. Just research what ever you plan to do and ask questions and you will be all set. Look at the tutorials and the forums. Look at the exploits forum and chep the sticky posts there and decide if that is the way you want to go. Check out the emulator forum just to get an idea of what type of emulators are out there. Check the xbox media center forum you will be amazed at what that program can do it's worth the mod just for that.

thats real helpful davey g, cept i actually live in the uk, as stated. The first four words i used were "Im in the uk". Thanks for a link to an american site. Ive found several places that sell pre-modded xboxs, but i was asking bluenewt where his/hers came from, as I wanted some feedback on how good or bad shops were. I am fluent in google thankyou very much.

this is straight from the front page of xbox-scene.com and is the method I used it is the best and I would say only worthwhile method of hacking an xbox with no chip.

Huge Xbox Software Exploits news update!
>> Much development has been done on the Xbox eploits the last few weeks and months in our forums which haven't really been covered in detail on the news (shame on me). I'll try to correct that error by giving you a nice overview of the current status and I will try to keep more up-to-date with exploit development from now on.
Not much has changed on the gamesave exploits, the 007: agent under fire(info), MechAssault and the non-officially-released Splinter Cell gamesave exploit are still working correctly on all xbox and kernel versions. There has been lots of development on the font exploits thought, the double dash exploit was already covered here, but now there's the “Ultimate Dashboard Exploit” aka UDE and very recently also the “Ultimate Dashboard Exploit2” aka UDE2 that even allows kernel 5713+ to use font/xbe exploits. Several tools to help installing and setup these exploits have also been released!

The new XBE (not really 'dashboard' anymore) exploits we have:
* The “Ultimate Dashboard Exploit” aka UDE (by Rmenhal - latest revision: v7)
Instead of exploiting the original xbox dashboard xbe the UDE exploit will exploit the C:\xodash\update.xbe file. Rmenhal released hacked fonts files to exploit this file.
From PedrosPad on forums.xbox-scene.com:
The result? The “Ultimate Dashboard Exploit” allows the booting of a habibi signed XBE, with no risk of a clock loop.
Pros:
+ Directing booting to Linux/PBL/Evox, etc.
+ No risk of clock loop.
+ Can still use custom sound tracks in games (the M$ Dashboard can still be accessed from Evox).
Cons:
- No Dashboard access to the XBOX!Live console.
- No XBOX!Live game access to the XBOX!Live console.
It achieves this by not actually booting a Dashboard at all, but by booting another M$ signed XBE, with the appropriate flags set to enable it to run from the hard disk. The actual XBE exploited is the C:\xodash\update.xbe, installed by the “updater to Live 1.0 Dashboard 4920” that is part of the original XBOX!Live startup kit, and shipped with most of the early XBOX!Live games (Splinter Cell, etc.).
There are a few different versions out there. Ensure you use the right expoit font for the right update.xbe!
Warning: This version of the exploit does not work on Kernels that prevent the execution of pre-live Dashboards, such as K:5713 or higher! Owners of K:5713+ XBOXs should look at the UDE2

* The "Ultimate Dasboard Exploit 2" aka UDE2 (by Rmenhal - latest revision: v7)
UDE2 is the solution for people with newer Xboxes with Kernel (bios) 5713 or higher. Kernel 5713+ does not allow to run pre-live dashboards, thus preventing the UDE(1) or older xbe/font exploits to work.
Rmenhal found that NFL Fever 2003 !Live content (thus signed for HD) has/had an update.xbe that works with all kernels (3944-5838). PAL, JAP, and ELSEWHERE owners can use it too, but it requires an edit of the EEPROM to region 1 (by devz3ro) for those specific consoles. Rmenhal made his fonts work with this specific xbe too.
More info: forums.xbox-scene.com (by devz3ro).

Hazaa look what I found by adding UK to the end of the search ...

http://www.xdvds.lunarpages.com/xbox/index...=premoddedboxes

All xbox modding sites that would show up in the first page are trustworthy. As I said before, divineo.co.uk is a very good site. If you read angrypants post you'll see why I said exploits are not really worth it, you waste an xbox controller, you need to buy a certain game, you need a memory card etc.

Its very simple to mod the xbox using a non-solder chip. Check the tutorials Xbox-Scene.

P.S. loz_the_guru please read mastaboog749's post to see what I replied to.

Replaceable game pad cable = $5
Used memory car = $5
Borrowing mechassault = free would have been $15 if I had bought it used
Xbox console = $189 in November it would be $149 now
120 wd hdd = $70

Total cost = $269

Compare that with an xbox from the site you listed pre-modded with the same size hard drive. I think I made my point, don’t get pissed because you got ripped off.

$386.50 each
Pre-mod xbox system w/ 7200rpm 120gb Seagate Hard Drive & Samsung DVD

You need to calm down, just because you're a guru doesn't mean you can flame the shit out of someone who, incidently, can actually post about this topic, and in the right section as well. Especially when most of the people here use their xbox for the same stuff as their gp32s so it's hardly warez.
