New Atari Console Coming (Ataribox)?

As I said earlier in this tread, Atari VCS is meme
They are cashing on nostalgia.

Only manchilds and soyboys will buy one.

Shoot, I woulda bought one if I weren't still saving for Pyra...

Judging by my weight, I'd say I'm more manchild than soyboy. :p

I think this thing will be pretty successful even after it launches, because parents or grandparents who remember the original will probably buy them as gifts for their children or grandchildren.

Those game dev studios will doom themselves if the games that they make are only exclusive to the VCS.

On other hand,

For a 200 USD you can easily get refurbished Sandy Bridge Optiplex/Thinkcenter/whatever, and put a low profile GPU and SSD in it.
The gaming experience will be far more superior.

I think it will be another OUYA, all hype before release then little to no support after.

Yeah, I see this being a complete train wreck as well, but what do I know? LOL

The NS is selling about as fast as any system in history, and outside of a few unique titles(Mario/Zelda), there is nothing but ports being offered. Most of which are cheaper and run better other places. So while the VCS looks rather useless to me, no telling what the buying public may think. I personally don't see that many people even from a nostalgia stand point being all that interested, as there have been tons of "Atari" related items over the years none of which set retail on fire.

The Jaguar was offered when Atari was still a pretty big name in most peoples minds, and it only sold what it did to those who needed that fix at the time(which wasn't many). I'm all for nostalgia, and reliving the glory days, but this looks as well thought out as the hat shown with the speakers. Maybe a great idea on paper, but not practical in the real world. I hope they take all this money and actually invest it in making games and getting some people on board who may actually help this system over time(all of which should have been in place already). Since this was first shown, until now, I've seen almost nothing that would warrant a $50 purchase, let alone $200+.

If you compare the price tag with the Nintendo Classic Mini (or however it is called) it doeesn't look that bad for me...
And if it really is an open system I don't care that much about not getting updates from Atari itself anymore in future...

I will be happy with an (slightly overpriced) Kodi Mediacentre/RetroPi.

Seem to be a few video's appearing on YT saying this is a scam / fake, I think that might be a bit harsh but some of it does look a bit suspect.

As ever with crowd funding, never spend more than you can afford to write-off.

Hah, I'd forgotten about the gameband.

It's a fair point about ignore any discounts, given you don't know when this will come out but it's likely to be at least a year. You'd have to take some pretty crazy investments with savings rates as they are to offset that saving, but pretty much any risk is better than the risk of getting one of these I reckon. And once it releases and you see what it actually is, you might not want it anyway.

As far as I know regarding the Pyra, we're not getting any discounts at all. Given how long it's taken we could have made interest on that money, but we invested it to help the Pyra team out, so we knew what we were in for. In comparison Atari has got many times what it asked for on kickstarter so can better afford people backing out. And the odds of getting a Pyra eventually are still greater than ever getting something looking like this.

Atari Starts Another Run of Not-So-Limited VCS Consoles

Items included:

Atari® Classic Joystick
Atari® Modern Controller
Atari VCS™ Tribute Edition

$379+shipping, Ouch.

Or $299+shipping with no controllers.

And now the "greed" enters the picture, which is of no surprise, as since this was first announced, all I ever saw was a massive "Cash Grab". So they set limited numbers, to make for a unique collector's item, and since interest is beyond their wildest dreams, they now decide to pretty much piss on those fans who actually showed up first? Everyone who ordered this crap should cancel ASAP and leave them to wonder "what went" wrong?

This "Atari" has shown nothing but we want money mentality, and have yet to show me a single thing that shows they deserve a dime from me, let alone the hundreds they are asking. Now having seen their actions of the last year and beyond, I'll be staying as far away from this as possible. You can always tell a tree by the "fruit" it produces, and this VCS should speak for itself, which for me it has.......and it's saying, nothing to see here, move along!

I thought it suspect that they only asked for $100,000.

When a project asks for too little money and has a "flexible goal" alarm bells start ringing for me.

So, it seems that Atari's man on facebook decided to call The Register's bluff, and the Register has responded by releasing the original audio of the interview. A minor case of egg on face?

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/21/atari_interview_in_full/

Holy Shit, at least if your gonna be a criminal, be a good one. Damn, if you can't keep track of your own lies, oh boy, this project is worse off than I ever could have imagined. I'm serious when I say anyone here who has pledged to this, should cancel now before it is to late.

Chris

To be fair to Atari, that was about their launch event which we already knew was a complete farce. Now they're trying to rewrite history, but if you'd been paying attention there's really nothing new here about it being a scam or not.

Of course, it is a scam.
