Because there was a lot Off Topic in the "What are you buying recently" Thread, i dezided to make a new one just for Off Topic,
At this Place you can talk about everything else, which ditnt have anything to do whit the topics..

I personaly use these Threads for some sort of personal blog, speak about your recend activititys, etc,

If somewhone finds typos in my English, feel free to take them..

Please ceep the other Threads clean, this is the Place for everything :)

Dammit. I was hoping there was a new version of Smalltalk when I read the thread title :(

<edit>

Ok, at the risk of invoking godwin's law, I am taking the following typos:
  • New --> new
  • Ultimative --> ultimate
  • Smaltalk --> smalltalk
  • Threadt --> thread
  • Off Topic --> offtopic
  • i --> I
  • dezided --> decided
  • Place --> place
  • ditnt --> didn't
  • whit --> with
  • recend --> recent
  • activititys --> activities
  • somewhone --> someone
  • ceep --> keep
They are now mine, you are not allowed to use them anymore :p

If this thread doesn't get nuked by the mods immediately, would they mind moving the crap about pronouns I've been a part of out of the Gemini PDA thread in here? It's about a pages worth by recollection. I think we all just got a little carried away, and thought for a moment we were somewhere in offtopic.

Well, my writing could be because im german whit only 3 yeahrs of english education in shool, whe write a lot of things big in german
the funny thing is: i got 9 yeahrs french in shool, and i only understand the basics..

Some Years ago, i wantet to teach myself french, by watching Louis de Funes Movies in french whit german subtitles, but just whit my bad french, i understand enough, to decide, that i rather would stop the movie as the text in the subtitle was diverent to my self translatet text..

I thought I let you all know in one of my posts. You know I am the master of offtopic.

Better than dubbed anime movies, though, right?

Also, the knife stuff from the what have you been buying thread can be moved here. And whatever else, I guess.

matzesu, I've been trying to learn Japanese for several years, and I still don't even construct sentences in it. I just know that "sumimasen" and "gomennasai" are the two most important words, so I keep those memorized.

Hell, I understand a little of a handful of languages (German, French, Spanish, Latin, maybe a bit more Italian than I recognize, possibly a couple others) but I couldn't make a sentence in any of them. I can't translate, but I can usually pick up a few words, and if it is written I can get a bit more, and maybe figure out what is being said.

I tried with Japanese, but there is no practical need for it in my life, so I gave up on it. Maybe I should look at, um, Chinese(?).

Same same...
Tried it, failed, gave up, tired it again, gave up again.
Its funny tho, when i find japanese letters in say a manual i can read them without problems just to find out its stupid engrish.

For me, i would more likely need to learn french, because whe are short after the "Border", thanks to Europa, there isnt any Border between french and german anymore..
whe have lots of french customers, lots speak also german, but one only french.., so i have to talk whit hands and feeds whit him..
Whe also have one Customers that are working on USA Airforce Bases in West Germany (Rammstein, Baumholder etc), and im the one who have to talk whit them because at this time, i was the only employe who spook that good english..

So mybe my spooken english is lot better than my written english,
but there are a lot words i cant say,

"Ridiculous Thoughs" from the Cranberrys, pretty awesome song, but i ditnt think i can tell Siri to play it back i cant say "Thoughs".. :(

I've had several years of German in highschool (about 5 or so), but much of my vocabulary became passive due to lack of usage.

French is never funny :p

I am no stranger to being offtopic. That said, I agree, you have me beat.

Few things are worse.

私の日本語は凄いでわありません

I would say I am fluent (but not flawless) in Dutch and English. My understanding of German and Spanish is reasonable (vocabulary is mostly passive and needs work) but spoken often goes too quickly (especially for Spanish).

When subtitled, I will be able to recognize quite some French. I have some lingering knowledge of Latin and am building knowledge on Japanese (I can read/type Kana and could at best distinguish about 2000 Kanji). I know Lojban mostly grammatically (though not all grammar words) and can build sentences when I have a dictionary.

Currently I am actively working on learning Spanish (priority), Japanese (secondary), Toki Pona (ternary) and Lojban. A few days ago I started some basic Chinese. Russian, Arabic and Korean are on the long-term todo-list and unlikely to be picked up any time soon, though I already know some Hangul and will probably pick up Cyrillic in a not too long future.

My primary interest is always first to see how languages do things differently in terms of phonetics, morphology, grammar and script. I rarely spend the time to actually build a working vocabulary.

With Latin, I wasn't actively trying to learn it. After looking through translations next to the Latin, and tossing phrases into Google, I started to pick up on some of it. Speaking it, though, nope, can't do that at all.

Becuase Rome's city, not a country? Latium was apparently the county that rome is in. It'd be like calling English 'Londish' or French 'Parish'. The real question is why we call the people Romans?

Probably for the same reason that most people call the Netherlands 'Holland' and think that the Dutch speak German ('Deutsch').

All you wannabe japanese guys should have shouted now.
The japs call it roman.
