Meh, let's face it, most of the things that make Android worth using in the first place are Google services. I guess Replicant would be viable if all you wanna do is sideload stuff....

I have no google on my Phone.
It's useful for:
1. Navigation
2. Whatsapp
3. Camera
4. Calling/SMS
5. Mobile Internet

What for do I need Google?

I dont need Android for Google Services...i need it only for Android Games and some Android Apks...
...maybe Videoplaying too :D

Well, you may not need it at all, some of us tolerate using slow and ridiculous mess that is Android because of:
1) Excellent maps & navigation by Google
2) Calendar & Contacts sync
3) The fact that great many apps nowadays require Google Services anyway.

I was under the impression that google's navigation sucked for all modes of transportation besides cars. Has that changed?
Well I used it for walking and I've never had a problem, but I don't use it for walking all the time.

I prefer Locus and openandromaps.

Google maps used to be good around android 2.x. Now I don't like it anymore, they dumbed down the maps and removed features.

I still use gmail and the contacts sync. But could leave that easily. The only reason I install gapps on my phone is for convenience of the play store and apps requiring it. I think that once I have the Pyra and use open source apps, I will leave Google.

I dislike that attitude a lot.
The world is full of people who degrade what they don't like or use.
Be it Apple fanboys, average Microsoft user or Linux geeks or specific types of Gamers.

People here are somewhat more tolerant but not that much more.
Whenever it comes to Java, Android, Microsoft, Apple or anything closed source some idealist can't withstand his inner need to make himself feel better by degrading others.

There is so much unwritten law and silent force of what to like and what to hate, what's good and what's evil.

And especially OpenSource communities are more ore less ruled by such "laws" as those kind of people who degrade others do justify their behavior with that kind of idealism that will make those look evil or careless or dumb who don't behave "well".

I wish so much to live in a world where I will not be confronted with that hidden accusation for my doings and decisions.
Why is it so hard to show respect for others even if they follow other ideals than one self does?
It is important to have different opinions and to be able to stand and fight for the own ideals and ideas but always in respect to each other.
But sadly in a lot of cases the need for glory and the good feeling of being on the "right side" is stronger than the wish for tolerance and respect.
And that leads to disrespect and degradation of each other.
And that makes everyone feel bad in the long run and takes away a lot of freedom for everyone.

Don't take that personal. It's not meant as a direct response to you or your person and not meant as an offense.
It's something general that disturbs me for quite a while now. In the digital world as well as in the "real" world.

Hey, none taken. I would like to point out that I would never think of "degrading" you for using Android or anything. I dislike it not because it doesn't fit in my "idealist" worldview, but because it is, in my humblest opinion, a terribly flawed product. Anyway, sorry to cause any grief to you, that certainly wasn't intentional.

If android used X11 instead of ARTS or Dalviok or whatever it would be a lot better IMO.

Nativ Android might be nice for some but I for myself still would prefer to start apks directly from the Linux desktop.
Hopefully Shashlik will do some progress.

I don't even take my own ramblings too seriously. Nagging is important to remind that something is wrong, it doesn't mean you automatically degrade people going the usual/easy/thoughtless way, in the end it's about preference.
Imho a compatibility layer for Android games would be all kinds of awesome but a dual-boot setup with replicant would be a consolation at least.

Shashlik is (to a significant degree) native Android.

Because ideals are jealous.

How well does it work at the moment?

I've tried it and not a single program did work.
Sometimes it did more than the boot screen and I think one app did start once.
So it's considered as not working for me.
There's no update since March on the official website and on the git so I don't have much hope for the project at them moment.

Maybe but I can start the apps directly from my Linux Menu and that's what I want.

If I can do the same with Replicant OS (or anything else but that's a Replicant Thread after all) in a virtual environment while I still can run my Linux it's perfectly fine for me.
As long as it does work and is comfortable to use I'm fine with it.

For me it's important to have the possibility to run messengers like Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber etc.
Lots of people use such services nowadays and only with SMS and Phone calls the Pyra can not replace a Phone for me.

You can twist the statement as you will, I just don't think you're much of a nerd if you hold your nose up instead of actively exploring.

I can't think of a single platform I haven't enjoyed learning something about.
