GPD Win (x86 Computer / Palmtop)

One possibility. I've also seen a solution with Thunderbolt 3 and ultra-mobile Laptops. You can plug in an external graphic card "box" (still rare but they come) to have have the full GPU power and still a cool Notebook.
External desktop GFX expansion for the dock to play Xonotic, Serious Sam 2nd etc... in ultra settings? Nice idea! Could use ARM ports of Trine 1-3 and Shadow Warrior 2013. Maybe some devs would be willing to give source to le petit seb.

Every modern chip will throttle before it damages itself. All the chip cares about is its own internal temperature. A poor case layout with no path for the heat to escape will throttle long before you feel any temperature change.

Yes, but you could have a secondary control using an external sensor that actually reasonably models skin temperature. SoCs may or may not be able to use such inputs in their hardware loops, I don't know if this is a thing or not, but it can certainly be done in the OS.

Sure, you might get 1st degree burns from extended gaming sessions, but you'd never have to worry about thermal throttling :)

Sounds great ;p

Really? I've just had a four-hour session on Herobound and it's just warm - no warning about the temperature and the only reason I stopped was the phone battery dying.
I guess it depends on the Phone and the game that's running. Pretty sure it was the Snapdragon 810 SoC that made trouble there. But if you really could use an mobile VR solution as long as you sayed, then it may be some hope for a efficient mobile-cooling-solution. :)

"Razer Core" for example. $500 WITHOUT GPU is a sporty price but I expect cheaper solutions in the future. Not sure if any mobile SoC even supports Thunderbolt 3. But in theory (and maybe with an X86 SoC) it could work on mobile devices like Pyra etc...

There are SoCs in the OMAP5 line that have PCI-E 3.0 AFAIK. Our doesn't.
Those GPU Expansion Boxes aren't that new. This thing for example is from ~2010

The OMAP5 in Pyra (OMAP5432) is currently the only one TI offers. And probably the last OMAP they'll sell.

They have some other Cortex-A15 SoCs in the Siterra line that do have PCI-E:

But that only has two lanes of PCI-E Gen 2. Which would probably limit performance a lot.

Samsung Galaxy S6 - only bought it because it was quite powerful and reasonably cheap :)

Hmm, I haven't seen a hinge that sticks out of the back like that on a handheld since, well, ever. It'll limit what you plug into that big USB port at least, and perhaps interfer with players reaching the L2/R2 buttons.

Also, it it just me who recognises that arrangement of ports on the back?

Galaxy Note 2, since lot of yeahrs, and only got a new batterie..

Well i guess, the Omap in the Pyra will be enought for most tasks,
At least for my own tasks..

But like i said before, compored to my CC Pandora, the Pyra will be uberluxus...

Wonder how DPD got rid of the heatissues of the Win..

Wonder how DPD got rid of the heatissues of the Win..

That was posted earlier in this thread, that's where this discussion aroused from :)

Well, they didn't get rid of it. They posted how they plan to do it, but how well that works is unknown, as they don't have a prototype yet.

And how got Dragonbox got rid of the heat issues??
Played some Serious Sam2 today on my Thinkpad, and i noticed a bit heat on the WASD Buttons..
And this Thing got a Van in it..
Ok its a X86 Intel Prozessor, and no ARM..

This GPD (DPD is a German Parcell Service)..

looks not bad, but i rather like the bricky DIY Look of the Pyra..

Usually I am fine with your Engrish, but I was totally confused for a moment when I got to the van line (a van is a vehicle, and I know you like trucks and stuff, so...). You meant "fan". :p :D

As do I. I actually think the Win is pretty ugly, but looks don't really matter much. Still, I would rather hold a brick than a heavily rounded device. One of the smartphones I use is always slipping from my grip because corners are rounded and the back is all curvy and smooth. My main one is more angular and has a texture on the back that keeps it nicely in my hand(s), while also being much smaller (and includes a physical keyboard).

Funny thing, I kind of like the bricky design too by now. Must have something to do with practically all designers making everything round and the fact that straight lines and corners can actually result in a better grip as well as make the device a bit smaller.

Honestly, I feel the Pandora is too rounded, also. It is kinda the best of both worlds, though, as the rounding is enough to help it into and out of your pocket (and keep you from having pointy corners poking you), but not enough to make it hard to hold on to. Some people seem to be able to use their Pandora as a knife if they really need to, as well.

I really want to see how the additional rounding on the Pyra feels, and I wonder if it will make it slide from my grip more. That great surface texture should help with that, not that I drop my Pandora. I guess I am going to go spend another hour looking at the prototype pics again.

I have nothing against some dull/flat corners here and there on such a device and I also don't like soap-rounded designs those days. 80's design was better, look at Cars like Lamborghini Countach or the DeLorean. :)
However, the Pandora/Pyra brick-design is not well made, especialy the coffin like outer lid curves do not fit at all to the bricky bottom. The roundings are pretty weird, I would have choosen some more straight bevel-like angles.
GPD have some better "lines" on their device and it's also alot thinner. Still not to curved imho which is good. And it is getting already alot of attention "out there", at least compared to the Pyra. This should change imho.

I would like more angles instead of curves on the Pyra, but I think it might be harder to get into pockets, or something. I do think the lid curves are weird compared to the rest of the Pandora shape.

I would like an Handheld design like this car:

Curved - but not round, edges but not to "sharp", perfect.
That reminds me of the slippery phone I was talking about (even the same color). The main difference is the rounded corners on the phone.

I would rather have the handheld version of this (or maybe the 68, for the over/under headlights, I haven't decided):
