How will Pyra production be funded?

Ease of producing a clear set of rewards & stretch goals.
Sounds like a good KS only option to me. :p
Seriously though, some people might be happy for some KS campaign exclusive colours. Clear, hot pink, and dark blue, for example. If ED can get a small run of those as a stretch goal it might be an extra benefit to some, and who knows, it might win a few extra sales.

For everything else you said, I think you are right about all the benefits. I hope we can get the remaining required preorders at about the rate the prepreorders went (still wish I had a more interesting number, but still happy I will get one of the first, and could help ED make this happen). ED can still do KS for fun cases or language specific keymats if we get enough sales.

C'mon Pyra, 12,000 units sold in the first year! Let's do this. (Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I would love for it to happen.)

You mean after the referendum ?

Yes. The pound is quivering in its boots at the moment and may sink dramatically for a while - meaning the Pandora could be more expensive to us Brits. Perhaps it would be wise to stock up on vouchers for ED's shop now...

Perhaps I am naive, but I think it may be better to try to engineer an article on Slashdot or Phoronix or Hacker News or similar, for a more receptive audience than on Kickstarter. I expect that they would read "handheld GNU/Linux general-purpose computer" and know roughly what to expect. Phoronix has mentioned the Pyra before (it is how I found out about it).

Mr. Loon, Thank you for the welcome :)

Publicity : Many more people browse/use Kickstarter/Indiegogo than view this website.
Thats true, but that is not the relevant number. The Question is: of all the people browsing on kickstarter, how many will see the pyra crowdfunding? And how many of them are aktually interested in it? And from those, how many can afford paying the full price at once?

Of course its possible that this last number would still be higher than with asking this question here on the forums, but I'm not sure. At least the percent ratio would be much higher in here.

Hi Blue Shadow, welcome to the forum :)
The big one : People unfamiliar with ED/Dragonbox may well feel more comfortable handing over money knowing that if the goal is not reached they will be refunded.
I agree, guess this would be the biggest advantage.

From the perspective of people who follow these boards I can see the obvious appeal of crowd funding done direct Via Dragonbox (saving €20-€25, using

vouchers, getting Pyra quicker etc.), but I think that the project as a whole would probably gain more than it lost if an established crowd funding method was used for first batch production.
For sure, those are different things, but I have to admit it is hard willing to sacrifice my future pyra ownership for the greater good :$

There could also be one significant disadvantage of taking a down payment with the balance to follow : What would happen for customers who do not use the Euro if there is a significant change in exchange rates between the initial payment & the final payment? (a significant majority of Pandora buyers were from UK&US IIRC)
Well,:

As I said, gift vouchers are pretty much underrated.

We have 21,806 Members on the Boards if say 5,000 are Spam Accounts and 10,000 aren't active anymore then we still have more than enough People seeing that such a thing as the Pyra exists. And if only 20% of that actually Preorder, we have allready enough to start mass production. Is there a way to search members that loged in in the last 4Months?

For the pre-orders on DragonBox...

Why restrict to only 50% down payment pre-orders?

Why not offer two types of pre-order?

1. Pre-order Pyra 100% up front at a cost of YYY EUR.
2. Pre-order Pyra 50% up front at a cost of YYY+10 EUR.

I.e. tack a nominal processing cost onto the 50% down payment offer. That should encourage 'true believers' to simply do the 100% up front. Those that do go for the 100% up front wind up helping to get production going that much more quickly.

IMHO, skip Kickstarter. But - you have to make your own business decisions.

That's not about whether users will pre-order, but rather about the crowd-funding options.

You said "polls to ask about preordering". It was a poll to ask about crowdfunding options, which is in fact preordering here.

you also missed the point of my comment...

Err.. maybe, as your comment was a bit ambigous. Are you refering to your second sentence with the emoticon? I thought it was just a joke, but that you have missed there actually already exists a poll. So it was a misunderstanding, sorry for that.

Follow up questions for @EvilDragon :

Would you like some help with translation/proof reading for the Pyra crowd funding campaign?

If so then what languages would you like help with?

English, French, Spanish & Japanese seem like sensible options to me.

Let's first decide whether we'll do a crowdfunding campaign or not, before we do something like proofreading.
I will also talk with GC, maybe they're fine paying the parts upfront once Kickstarter is successful, as that means they'll get the money for sure.

Of course, it's always good having native speakers into a campaign.

I would like to suggest the following approach:

First try to get enough people to buy preorders from dragonbox shop. Send emails to Pandora Customers too (you probably have a lots of mail addresses). Write to heise, golem, gulli and maybe send them prototypes with out of the box software. Maybe send some to gaming our famous youtube persons. Like gronk.Maybe send one to universities with Network Departments. They often use hacked android phones for wlan testing in the field. This is terrible. A Pyra with wireshark and lte would be a great alternative.

If this fails, maybe a kickstarter with a big MADE IN GERMANY logo (higher quality then china stuff) would be a good idea. To make the Pyra different from the cheaper GPD device. Of course they are different devices (open linux, vs closed win10), but higher quality seems promising to sell stuff to people. Apple is using metal cases with an apple to show how "high quality" their stuff is and people are buying it.

...

By crowd funding I was also meaning getting pre orders direct from Dragonbox. I was guessing there might be a web page on the Dragonbox site dedicated to Pyra pre orders.

Plus, there may be some other people, like me, who cannot be bothered with the perceived "hassle" of paying twice and would rather pay everything at once. I have sufficient savings and would rather pay my fee in full, and look forward to my shiny new toy, than pay in part and think, too, of paying some more before getting my new plaything.

Exactly. I think that ED has gotten a bit too hung up on offering alternative payment plans that he may have forgotten to include the option to simply pay up front and get the device when it is done/ready without additional hassle. That should be the default, and other options, since they involve additional processing, should be slightly more expensive to cover those additional costs associated with keeping track of them. IMHO - you're all welcome to your own opinion too.
