200mhz Gp32 Experiment

Fry that Blu...(As long as its not mine i don,t mind so much)
I gotta say that my BLU does seem much better than my FLU and not only in the screen display area..
I spent all last night running Mariokart and lost Vikings on the SNES emu at 166 with no problems or crashes.
I could only get my FLU up to 150 - 156 before it would start giving me problems.
I am also going to try (should that be FRY) pushing my Zodiac up towards the 240 - 260 Mhz area to see if it will tolerate any higher clock speeds.
I might also see if its possible to up the speed on the graphics card in it but i,m not sure its possible.
The BLU seems to be ok with batteries , (i,m using 2300 NiMH from Argos)but i,ll do a long term test at different speeds etc.
I,ll also let you know when i do some more screenshots on the BLU / FLU over the weekend.
I might run some Divx stuff if possible to download as well.

Only time i ever cried over a computer loss...God i missed , "Monster Maze"
At least for a couple of weeks till i got a new one.

Firstly I have found that GP32's which can go beyond 180MHZ are very very rare indeed, infact its about 1 in 25.

And if they can go beyond it they do seem to be stable and they ARE faster, Guyfawkes has done some experiments for me on his 200mhz unit and reported:

Fgen @ 156mhz with sound on at FS0 (accurate mode) 30 'sonic' seconds takes 41 real time seconds.

Fgen @ 188mhz with sound on at FS0 (accurate mode) 30 'sonic' seconds takes 31 real time seconds.

So 188MHZ sees a speed increase of about 30%!

in fact.. after a quick looksy at the gp32's cpu data sheet, this cpu should only be able to (safely) go up to 150mhz...
That 'looksy' was a bit too quick. Maximum CPU speed for the S3C2400X by Samsung is 133MHz. Page 56 of the 1.1 Revision of the S3C2400X CPU issued by Samsung.

And what would be the battery life for 188 MHZ?

I think we're going to have to add some battery slots to our GP32s :D
 
That's actually funny RoboJoe32, I remember my grandfather helping me create a module for my Game Gear (this was back in the day before Gameboy Colour even, so the Game Gear was hot stuff, and I had a Sega Master System adapter to play my old SMS favs) to use 6 D-cell batteries in a box about the size of the Game Gear itself. Lasted a nice 12+ hours!

Heck, with the OCing and such, a battery mod might be feasible if done right. Running at 133 MHZ at more than 3 hours would be nice.
 
I will never stop supporting my local dollarstore :lol:

Besides, 1 dollar for 4 batteries at 3 hours each defies the price of those fancy titanium E3 batteries anyways
 
using normal batteries and not rechargeables is just uhm, think about the waste and the nature, and even your money. buy some good 2300mah nimh rechargeables for 10eur and get happy for a loooong time with them
 
I heard that the NiMH batteries have problems with "memory" does anyone notice this? The best is LiIon but I haven't seen those available in this size.

I heard that overclocking was not reliable yet on the Zodiac. Also it REALLY sucks the batteries dry quickly I heard. This is a bigger problem for the Zodiac because it has non-removable batteries. This means you can't just switch dead batteries for charged ones, you need to get to a mains quickly before you lose all of your RAM.

Yeah, I also heard that when OC'd, it smells and makes farty noises. It also starts perspiring uncontrollably (it's really embarrasing)!!

My 2100mAh rechargables last 4 hours, full sound, 156MhZ, FLU on. Thats 4000 (1000 charges) hours for 20EUR (includes charger). Thats 1/2 cents per hour (not including electricity costs which I don't pay). Normal batteries even 1 eur for a pair that lasts 10 hours at same speed is 10 cents/hour, or 20x the cost for rechargables :D

Get rechargables and pay 1 EUR for 20 EUR you would spend on normals (worst case. I bet you couldn't find a pair of normal batteries that last 10 hours on 156MhZ, FLU for one EUR :D)

Hmmm... Mabye gamepark could advertise for rechargable battery companies ;)

Yep, NiMH rechargables suffer from the so-called memory effect.
This means: If you recharge them before they are empty, they lose capacity.
LiIon don't have this problem. You can load them whenever you want.

So, if you use NiMH, be sure to get a charge device (that thing that recharges the batteries, don't know what it's called in English ;)) that decharges first and then recharges.
